    I swear I wish I'd known all this back in college a gazillion years ago. (I am 70.) Learning these things now has given me so much joy. I've been able to grow my nails out longer and keep them well manicured longer. I'm really having fun with this, and it's thanks to folks like you on CZcams for this education.

      I am 55 and I have fun w/it, too. A while back I was ill for a long time & struggling, it made me depressed and I stopped taking care of myself. As I started to recuperate from my illness, it was hard to snap out of the depression. I made a promise to myself to start by taking better care of myself. It started small-- once a week I did my nails. Just some dollar store polish. I moved on to pedicures & full on nail care after a few months... then skin care, hair care, started putting more effort into dressing a bit nicer (nothing fancy, but I was literally wearing sweatpants & tshirts all day that I slept in, I started getting up, putting on an outfit, adding accessories, doing up my hair a bit, etc.). Even started wearing make-up again, and eventually led to exercise & diet that has improved my physical & mental health.
      When I was a kid we had the beauty mags, I loved them (I was a big girly girl back then, always dressed & made up and nails done). Now, I've come to love the beauty You-Tube videos, esp. those that give simple tips & tricks like this.
      So yeah, at any age-- if you like doing your nails, your hair, your make-up, take up a craft-- whatever really brings you a bit of joy into your life. Don't worry about age, or how well you do it, just enjoy it!

      Ashleigh Latham you shouldn't use acetone to dehydrate your nail plate. That will cause an over production of oil and can cause premature lifting or chipping. 91% alcohol is safe for your nail plate when used sparingly. Or wash your hand with soap and water and let dry before polishing.

    I don't spend much on my nail products because I really can't afford it. However, if I stick to the basics, I can make my $2 sinful colors polishes last for a month. My nails always grow out before chipping. Not sure what I'm doing right..
    I use 2 coats of my Revlon strong adhesive base coat, 2-3 coats of color till I reach complete opacity, then I use a very thin Sally Hansen kwik dry top coat, followed by another coat of thick top coat (don't remember what brand. I have a few, but I always spend good money on my bases and tops). I always make sure to wrap the tips with every coat. I also refuse to use gel polish because I change the color too often and removal is awful for your nails.
    My nails are super strong and I take good care of them.. always shaping them, touching up the edges so they don't snag, and moisturizing between manis.
    I haven't been to a salon in years because I prefer doing my own. Last time I got a professional mani, it chipped in 2 days.
    I can't see spending $20 at the salon when my nails look just ad nice when I do them. I use to do farm work and they wouldn't chip. Not even after being soaked in water. I'm seriously so rough on them and they always stay almost perfect somehow. :-)
    I think a lot of it has to do with everything I've learned from watching tutorials like yours .

    Wearing gloves is such a good tip! It makes a BIG difference. I have super fancy gloves that are almost fun so that it'll give me more incentive to wear them. EVERY TIME I clean my kitchen without gloves my manicure gets totaled and my cuticles look like they're college students during finals. lol My mom is always saying that she just can't wear polish even though she loves it because her hands are in water too often, told her to wear gloves but she hasn't gotten any. For Christmas I'm buying her cuticle oil and nice gloves because I hate that she wants to wear polish but feels like she can't keep it nice looking for long enough.

Where I grew up in NJ, it was common for everyone to have kitchen gloves - but I've noticed that here in Atlanta, people think it's so weird that I wear gloves to do the dishes! Thanks for thinking of this series!
    I've never had problems with peeling or chipping, and it's mostly because my nail plate is not greasy at all. I can wear a regular polish mani for almost 2 weeks with minimal tip wear (my current mani has been going for 12 days with only minor chips). This is wonderful during exam season, when I can't change my polish but don't like going naked

    Somehow my polish usually lasts at least 2 weeks and I do absolutely nothing to baby it. You said that nails can get stained. Mine start to yellow after a few months, which is common. I was trying whitening toothpaste, which I heard was good for this. A sudden brainstorm hit me. If whitening toothpaste helped, what would denture cleaner do? I got some and tried it. Magic happened. Just a few minutes in a cup of warm water with one tablet and my nails came out perfectly normal again. To date, I have never heard anyone else do this. I'd love you to try it and see if it works on others. And yes, I use one of the best brands of base coats religiously. They still turn yellow, possibly because of the long times between manis? 😊

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  Před 7 lety +7

      +JayKB hey! I've never heard of that denture cleaner idea, but it sounds amazing! I would definitely try it but I find that my nails never get stained anymore, lol. Maybe I should go without base coat for a few weeks and then try! And hm, I wonder why they are turning yellow no matter what - maybe it's the amount of nutrients you're getting? I've heard eating garlic helps your nails a lot, (and I eat a ton of it haha)

    • @jaykb6587
      @jaykb6587 Před 7 lety +5

      Kelli Marissa I use Spirulina every day. Without that my nails are weak and constantly break. I would definitely not try going without a base coat to try the denture cleaner. Watching comments on other channels, yellow nails seem to be quite common. Consider yourself lucky! 😃

      It depends on which top coat are you gonna use. For instance, Seche Vite can be used on a not dry coat of polish, as it will penetrate all the layers to form a unique thicker coat...
      If you use Sally Hansen Instadry instead, wait for the polish to be completely dry.

      I guess in the case of nails I just want to know which is more important, base or top coat? If the base coat makes your color adhere better, wont it do the same to your last color coat plus shine at the end? So why can't it double?? Super curious, but I'll take video girl's word for it.
      (Sorry I forgot ur name as i was typing, 1st time on your channel, GREAT video. Clear, quick, informative, well shot & the whole 9. @@NellenelleForSure i know this is an old comment, but in a nutshell: Base coat is meant to be painted on top of, so it doesn't have a very nice finish and dries kind of tacky. top coat dries super hard and makes for a very nice glossy finish.

    Please don't take this the wrong way people, but, I work in a warehouse, have to do a lot of fidily work using my hands and it's just seems that my nails chip no matter what! I love the videos, people's nails always look so good, I just find it hard to believe that with doing manual work it's hard to stop my nails from chipping and breaking and that they will last ATLEAST a week.I have to do my nails every two to three days if I want them looking good. Also very much depends on the brand I use!!

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  Před 5 lety

      I think in some cases there just isn't enough you can do - and it sounds like yours is one of them. Any sort of hand-heavy work or anything that requires you to constantly wash or submerge your hands is just going to be rough on your hands. The best solution in those cases is to look into gel polish, and if that isn't strong enough, you should consider acrylic!

  • @aquariaaustin2077
    @aquariaaustin2077 Před 2 lety +1

    The best nail dehydrator is old fashioned rubbing alcohol. I use the kind at the pharmacy for prepping injections. Rub one of those pads over your nails before your manicure, wait for the liquid to evaporate (SECONDS). It will dry the bed AND sanitize it. Costs a whole lot less than "nail dehydrators," too.
    Base coat is MORE important to prevent polish chipping/peeling than top coat. Really. Also with you on not being a fan of 2-in-1 base + top coat. The base coat is never "sticky" enough and the top coat is never shiny/protective enough. Just buy the two separately. Sheesh.
    Another tip, especially for people like me who do a whole lot of typing every day: Apply a fresh layer of top coat every other day, or even every day. Typing really wears down capped tips and the ends of your nail polish. Fresh top coat will reduce that wear and tear.
    And to expand on your recommendation for wearing gloves--be more mindful of your nails in general. They're fragile, but too many people take them for granted. When I started doing my nails more often, I learned to tell myself--Be more careful with opening doors, pushing buttons, putting keys in ignition, opening your car trunk, lifting things etc etc etc. Because I've made myself more mindful about my nails, the polish doesn't chip as much, and I don't break them nearly as often.

    base coat helps the polish stick to your nail more easily. A base coat also creates a barrier that helps protect your nails from the damaging effects of nail polish. It prevents staining and peeling, and it will give your polished nails a more even texture. 🙂

I put coconut oil all over my nail bed, let it set 1-3 minutes, then wipe off excess w dry Kleenex, then I paint my nails ( I don't wash oil off)- this has made a huge,huge difference in my nail polish wear and stopped my peeling!!! okay, I always use cuticle oil, and never use a dehydrator. this is bad for your nails and will cause them to break. use your cuticle oil and just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before painting them, I usually get 6 to 9 days of wear, and would probably get more, but I take it off due to nail growth, which causes the gap to grow too large.

    Reckon used to have the best base coat. I would use that and Sally Hansen’s no chip top coat, and my manicures would last a week with only occasional need for a touch up. Then Revlon changed their formula which was nowhere near as good. I have spent years searching for something that worked as well, and I finally found it! Ella+Mila is the bomb! You can purchase the base and top coats in a duo on their website for $18. They are also available in some drugstores such as CVS. I own a bookstore, and my nails see a lot of action. My manicures are back to making it all week long!

    But I just watched another video of yours where you immediately moisturized before you did your nails?!? Love your videos. Thanks so much.

    • @KelliMarissa
      @KelliMarissa  Před 5 lety

      Haha yes I do moisturize before my manicures but I either wash my hands or I use dehydrator to strip the oils/lotion off the nails first! Hope that makes sense. I don't recommend moisturizing until after if you have troubles with peeling though! I mostly do it just to help my cuticles get pushed back, or because I want my skin to look nice for videos haha.

    Odd tip (that I'm kinda embarrassed to write): If you use the OPI peel-off basecoat for sparkle polish DO NOT remove it with polish remover!!! It creates a chemical reaction and damages your nail badly. I wish I wasn't speaking from experience, but I am- I had it on my toes, it was taking forever to chip off, so I tried to soak off, and I'm still growing out the damage.

    • @KelliMarissa

    • @frugallibertarian176
      @frugallibertarian176 Před 7 lety

      Kelli Marissa It left them with these dark white marks, and they were really dry and brittle. I had the baby toe on my right foot's nail break right in half, and the big toes are still breaking. I never show them without polish because they look horrible.

    I found at a rite aid near where I work a top coat that prevents chipping and it sort of works. Some of my nails chipped but not as bad as if I had regular top coat on. I work in a floral dept with lots of water, cutting flowers, prying buckets apart that people put away wet haha (they're plastic black buckets)

    Great tips Kelli! Thank you...I never thought of dehydrating my nails before polishing. Also, the difference between base and top coat is good to know...I thought they were basically the same! And I also used to always oil or lotion up my cuticles BEFORE polishing. Never again! Gloves are definitely a good idea too. BTW...my nails are finally growing because of your tips! so thank you! I prefer mine short like yours too... I am trying out your square look! I love it with the short length. I do a lot of typing at work, and if they are too long they get in the way!

    I have heard never take a bath or shower ( spa day lol) before doing your nails because the pores open up. This made so much sense because as they are drying they shrink up.
