    In this Professional Genealogist Reacts I react to my dog's Embark DNA test results. My dogs Pete and Jack were found on the side of the road in Merced, California, fostered by my sister, and then flown to me in North Carolina. We have wondered what breeds they are but even more importantly we have wondered if they are actually brothers. Embark dog DNA Tests are the only tests which do familial matching similar to that of Ancestry DNA, Family Tree DNA, 23andMe, and MyHeritage DNA. Pete and Jack had taken a Wisdom Panel dog DNA test through their Banfield Hospital program which showed they were some sort Chihuahua / Poodle mix, which I found are called Chi-poo dogs. So I was curious how the results would differ through Embark and if they might be more in-depth.

    I thinking they did Pete's DNA first so Jack's might not have been there to hook up with. But then when they did Jack's, Pete's was already there. If they do occasional updates, I wonder if it will show later?

    Here is an idea, how far can you reliably go back in Jack and Pete ancestry. How big can the tree get.
    I would 100% watch a 1 hour video of that

      My dog growing up, P.J. (who Pete and Jack are named after), came from a long line of Maltese dogs and I actually traced his pedigree back many generations! We had to put him down 5 years ago but I would have loved to have done his DNA to see his matches. You can actually find the family tree for PJ here - ingrus.net/maltese/details/14616

    Ah this brings back memories of my dad testing our dogs to see their ancestry. As it turned out one of dogs, whom we assumed was a beagle-terrier mix, turned out to be beagle, husky, bulldog, and boxer with, surprisingly according to an update, a bit of Jindo (a Korean dog breed). He was from Georgia and I have no clue how common Jindos were in Georgia in 2007, which is when he was born (he was a rescue my family got from a shelter). He lived to be 18 and was very sweet with his brother, a big purebred beagle, and, as my dad refers to our current pair, his grandkids.

    I loved how excited you got, I would be the same lol. I need to do this for my dog Murphy. He's a rescue and I was told his parents were a poodle and a husky. But no one believes me that he is a husky-poo. He has the doodle curly fluff but with a double coat on top and he has a husky style tail. I want to know!

      I wonder if Jack didn't show up on Pete's because you hadn't looked at Jack's yet. Maybe looking at the results first "triggers" it to show up in matches? I'm just guessing. Does Jack show up now?
      Also, this looks SO FUN to do, lol. I have a dog (Harrier mix) and would love to see if she has any doggie relatives out there, lol.

      He still isn't showing up in Pete's matches! There must be some sort of glitch and it might be because Jack's results were finished a week before Pete's.

    I wish I could've tested my childhood dog on this. She was mostly Labrador (or so we were told), but with some unknown mix of one or more other breeds. Based on appearance and temperament, we were guessing GSD or Rottweiler because she had a white belly and brown spotting (despite otherwise looking like a black Lab) and she had a very protective, guard dog temperament. Whatever her mix, she was a great dog for a family with children, very loving and protective and nurturing.
    My current dog is supposed to be pure chocolate Lab, and it's interesting how much contrast there is. She's also loving and nurturing, but seems way too naïve/trusting and friendly to be a guard dog. Also, my childhood dog barked quite a bit and had a very fierce intimidating bark, whereas my current dog rarely barks, only when she's extremely frustrated/excited.

    Animal dna test are a thing?
    I am really interested in this. We have two cats who were both found just a few days old on our summerhouse. We are very sure they brothers and I have thought of the idea of pet genealogy.
    They are 6 years old now and have been very good cats.

    Ive thought of embarking my Papillon but I know he is full, I would expect he would have siblings pop up as his breeder had really poor ethics and bred his dam every heat cycle. I rescued him from a lady who got him from the breeder. I wish I had tested my previous service dog as we only guessed he was Papillon/Dachshund.

    • @Silverhaired59

      My two mutts have a bunch of purebred dogs as relatives on Embark. My Blu, who is 59% Boston Terrier, has dozens of relatives and all but a couple are pure-bred Bostons. I think people are checking out their pure-bred dogs for genetic defects. I can’t think why else they would be testing their dogs. My Neville’s biggest portion is 40% Pekingese. Again, a bunch of purebreds in his relative list! We found a grandmother or aunt of his in Minnesota. We are in Michigan. That dog’s owner thinks hers came from an Iowa puppy mill. Makes sense. Blu is related to a bunch of southern dogs. Georgia puppy mill?

  • @cathyc6725
    @cathyc6725 Před 3 lety

    Interesting. I tested mine with Wisdom Panel. If it goes on sale, maybe I will try this one too. Basically mine is a trailer trash mutt! Knowing the predominate breed can help with training. Train as if your dog was a purebred whatever the most dominate breed is.

    • @GeneaVlogger
      @GeneaVlogger  Před 3 lety +7

      Yep, I've contacted all of them including a new match that was 27% to both my boys. Ruby and Max are half-siblings who were also found on the side of the road and adopted together by their owner. The others all have mysterious backgrounds as well but come from Northern California, so I'm thinking they are either 'rejects' from a puppy mill or they come from some strays who are living in that area. I'm guessing it is more likely the puppy mill scenario. I'm hoping I'll get a close match who was bought and not adopted, then we might be able to name the puppy mill or even their parent's.
