    Hello Jeff. I'm new to your channel and marine electrical systems and am loving/hating the finding out what I didn't know, I didn't know. Phew! Thank you for doing this and enlightening the uninformed, me! I live in Alaska where it's hard to find quality technicians. Nigel should be proud! I recently bought a power boat with a Xantrex MSW inverter. I believe it is connected to the house batteries only. There is a prosport12 charger right beside the inverter I've been using to charge the house batteries. Today, I realized the inverter is a charger. So far, everything in the boat is working as it should. In this video you say not to use the MSW inverter. What is the trade off? Should I not using it at all? Or, should I use it as a charger only? Or, as an inverter only. You recommend moving to TSW inverter/charger, can this wait till I upgrade? I am currently running two GC2-ECL-UTL 225 AH 6 V batteries in series. Can you please explain further? Thank you for your knowledge, time and patience.

    Thanks for all the great videos…if I have an inverter/charge should I turn it to charger only if I leave the boat for any length of time in case I lose shore power so the inverter won’t run my house battery down?

    Thanks for this instructive video. Very interesting. I'm actually in a process of installing an inverter/charger, but not in a boat. Sold my boat and now going to the RV route. Is Mastervolt a good brand? I like Victron, but the size and weight is too much for my RV. Need something that is good looking enough to be installed on a wall not too far from the battery bank,.

    Hi Jeff - is the inverter neutral bus connected (inverter -> inverter neutral bus & neutral for all inverter loads -> to the main panel neutral bus) ? This makes sense to me but you didn’t get into the weeds (understandably) at 17:20 in the video. Thanks for all the knowledge you share. Proud to call you a fellow Canadian!

    Jeff, what a fantastic web series. I plan to buy a boat in a few years and it makes sense to me to study now and apply later. You are giving me a great foundation. After watching this video, I went to one of those "dream boat" production manufacturers website and dove right into the electrical spec to find a 30' boat with a single 80ah. Seems really low, no inverter or charger. Do the big manufacturers skimp on electrical or do they just use it as an upselling tool to take your money with more add-ons?

      Yep, the electrical for most builders is safe but very bare for electrical capacity or generation. You'll need to complete this part of the journey.

    Glad you discussed this, but no ideas are given.
    I was going to install my inverter/charger directly above my house battery bank as the max of 5 feet on my boat vs battery location is tricky.
    What do you recommend when battery bank/engine room/inverter:charger location is a issue when trying to stay within 5 feet (per my manual)

      Make sure inverter/charger is not directly above the battery bank because of the corrosive gassing when the batteries are charging. IF you really cannot install within 5 feet of battery bank, then consider increasing the wire to offset for voltage drop.

    Jeff, do you find many inverter-chargers installed farther away then recommended by the factory that haven't been compensated by larger wires?

      Exactly, to offset voltage drop you want larger wires to inverter/charger.

    First of all, I just found your instructional videos and can't stop watching them. I still have quite a few to go, but I have already learned so much. Jeff takes complicated subject matter and makes it easy to understand while holding your attention with interesting and sometimes humorous personal stories. Your videos supply a wealth of much-needed information to boaters. Thank you.
    I'm not sure if this is still monitored, but I hope it is, and I have a question. When installing an inverter charger with its own inverter subpanel, is it permissible to run jumpers between 1} the AC main panel neutral bus and the inverter subpanel neutral bus, and 2) the AC main panel safety ground bus and the inverter subpanel safety ground buss (not the AC hot busses)?
    I want to move AC circuits from the AC main panel to the Inverter subpanel, but the pairing of the individual AC circuit ground/neutral/hot wire sets is hard to determine. The builder has stripped the outer insulation jackets back to a point where it will take major surgery to get back to the point where it can be determined which wires make up a set.
    The thought is to move the hot wires for the inverter circuits to the subpanel and jump the neutral and safety buses of the two panels together to complete the circuits. I'm sure it would work, but does it break any rules, and is it safe?
