  • This week Bob takes on Nobby in a twin test to see which car they would actually buy. The Skoda Superb PHEV versus the Peugeot 508 PHEV in a test that sees the two lads drive from Dublin to Wicklow and back again.
There is an error in the film, BIK exemption only applies to full BEVs and not PHEVs.

Really enjoyed this joint review. You guys should definitely do another. One point I'd make though, when you mentioned you can get a standard superb for a lot cheaper. This is a basic Superb, with underpowered engine, manual transmission, lower spec interior, lower spec infotainment. If you are happy with the basic spec that is fine. But really should compare the price of these to an equivalent spec'd and powered Superb with DSG. When you do that the price difference is very small.

Love that road from Killakee up to the featherbeds and the acute right hand turn down to Glenesmole. I used to commute that road for 15 years before the M50/M11 and loved throwing the car around those bends. Best driving road in Ireland at speed with a good handling car. Entertaining review with the two lads really worked well. Just proves PHEVs don't work that well for the majority of users, who would have been better off either going full BEV or just get an efficient diesel. Neither one thing nor the other. If you can commute to work on PHEV range, happy days, but flip having to plug-in every single day or even twice a day is a total pain in the neck. It rains in Ireland, handling wet charger cables is a PITA. A decent BEV only needs to be charged once or twice a week.

@@bdeithrick Yip, I crossed that way every morning and every evening for 15 years. Coming from the office late at night had to avoid the odd joyrider hijackers up there, looking for a ride home after they set their quarry alight. They had all manner of what to the untuned eye looked like plausible reasons to stop folks pretending to be in distress, even bodies strewn across the road, as if knocked down. I nearly flattened a few of the gobshites as I drove through at speed. Not falling for that. No mobile signals up there even for 088s back in those days, but usually called the boys in blue when got into range again at Glencree, just to let them know there's a fake accident looking for a lift home at the end of the featherbeds. The 3.0 TD could really take those bends on the top well. The ones you could see around.

Guys a bit more research needed.
BIK exemptions of €50k only applies to full electric and not PHEV. As the bik is based on list price these will be not an economical choice as a company car.
These are designed to be charged each night at home for about €1.
This gives you 200km/week for €5.
You might save €1000/year in fuel but with the list prices that high you will never see the money back.

  • @MiniHD
    @MiniHD Před 3 lety +6

I think that you are missing the point with a PHEV a bit here.
TL:DR: If your driving pattern is based on shorter daily drives and you can recharge the car over night - a PHEV can be quite economical and environmentally friendly and still have the "instant" long range of a petrol car.
They are not supposed to be electric cars, they are not supposed to rely on public charge points as you drive for longer distances (both from a cost perspective and a charging time perspective). Neither are they supposed to be driven on electric mode until the battery is flat and then go to petrol mode, then you are negating the hybrid side of the vehicle. They are not the best choice for all different driving needs, but for some they are excellent (from my point of view).
I have driven a BEV before (KIA e-Niro) and are now driving a PHEV instead (Skoda Superb iV). That type of hybrid car suits my needs better than the pure electric one did (and also better than a "pure" hybrid with no recharging from the grid). First, my daily driving is mostly within the town I live, to and from work, visiting my friends and relatives and so on. That means that my daily driving is almost always done in electric mode. Second, I have the possibility to recharge my car over night at my parking spot, I wake up to a fully charged car with 40-50 km of pure electric range. That's enough to keep my in pure electric mode for almost all my driving needs. For longer drives, when I know that I'm going to exceed the electric range, I switch to hybrid mode from the start. Then the car can utilise the battery to lower the petrol consumption for the entire journey, and isn't relying on petrol alone (but still having the possibility to "recharge" at a petrol station in a couple of minutes).
In the Skoda, the car can actually plan when to use electric power by using the built in navigation system. I enter my destination in the navigation system, put it in hybrid mode, set it to auto to use all battery power for the journey (or manually choose how much energy I want to have left in the battery on arrival) then the car will manage the battery and petrol power sources to get the lowest consumption over all (based on terrain topography, speed limits and so on). If I put it on auto the battery will be empty on arrival, thus lowering the petrol consumption as much as possible. If I don't have the possibility to recharge the battery at my destination I'm not going to use the auto-mode, but rather put the manual limit for battery usage at about 50%. By doing that the car will use the first 50% on the first trip and you can use the remaining 50% for the return trip. For my longer journeys (>200 km) I'm averaging about 0.45-0.50 liters/10 km, which is still good numbers for a petrol car that weighs around 1700 kg. It is never economical to use the manual setting to recharge the battery from a low charging state with petrol power, while driving. That will cost more than actually using the battery until empty and recharge from the grid. The car will off course still recharge during travel by using the momentum of the car while braking, but avoid actually charging directly from the petrol engine.
I've used around 0.20-0.25 liters petrol per 10 km (yes, I'm Swedish, we use liters/10 km - you do the maths for mpg... ;) ) and about 1.3 kWh of electric power per 10 km as an average for the last 2600 km driven. That's off course based on driving most of my journeys purely electric and recharging at night.
Then, why not a BEV? Well, I'm not interested in planning my longer travels based on when and where to recharge the battery. I've tried it and it made business travel more cumbersome than I like (you can call me lazy if you want). I'd like to switch back to BEV eventually but I want to wait for battery capacity and range to increase before buying a BEV again. The models that have decent range are way to pricey still.
Ok, if I'm not interested in planning of charging etc, than why not a diesel or petrol car? Well, I can lower my running costs significantly while driving on battery, most of my driving is still purely electric which is way cheaper (especially since I have the possibility to charge at home) and renders less pollution. Also, in Sweden we get a tax deduction and a bonus for low emission vehicles. Since my car i leased through my company, the running costs is where i can save money on my car ownership, and that means that a PHEV is hitting the sweet spot for me. That doesn't mean that it is the right choice for all.

I happen to drive a peugeot 508 phev. Although it's far from perfect, I tend to disagree with the most criticized points by reviewers. I must have a strange sitting position, cause for me the size and position and of the steering wheel feel actually much better and more logic than a "normal" one where you have look through the steering wheel. The other point that about every reviewer criticizes is the heating/cooling operation. True, it takes exactly one extra push, but be honest, how often do you change it? I set my preferred temperature, put it on automatic and than no longer touch it for weeks or even months. However the temperature setting is a bit of annoyance to me for an other reason. Peugeot claims the car has a 10" screen, but the temperature always stays on the screen in a band on both the left and right side, leaving an actual usable screen size that's way smaller.
About the USB port. It's indeed in a awkward place, but you can actually guide the cable to the storage space in the center console where it's much more accessible and neatly hidden when not used.
The upgrade of the charger is actually only €300 in my country, that was a no-brainer for me.

I just wanted to pick you up on something that was mentioned a couple of times, namely, that the Skoda Superb has a bigger boot - actually it doesn't! The non-PHEV version does, but the iV officially has 485L with the seats up. In contrast, the 508 has 487L with the seats up. This is a where the Peugeot's design is better thought out as they store their batteries under the seat, and therefore don't lose any boot space, whereas Skoda really shoots holes in it's USP, namely having a large boot, by eating into that space for the battery storage. If it was a non-PHEV - no brainer in terms of boot space in both the estate version and the hatch. Peugeot's designers have played a blinder by not using up any valuable real-estate within the car for their battery storage. Personally, I've had a 308SW and also have a 5008, both with small steering wheels. I've done 40,000 miles (combined) in both cars in 2 years and the smaller steering wheel is just not an issue in reality. if you can't see the instrument binnacle, either adjust the seat (upwards) or move the wheel - either way, it's just not an issue. I enjoyed the banter between the both of you - thanks for the vid 👍🏻

    @patrickoneill9189 Před 3 lety +1

Bob, I think you were quoting prices for the Skoda before the grant is applied while Nobby was quoting the price after the grant so I think the comparisons given were flawed? Consumers only care about what it costs after grant as thats what it costs them. Before grant prices dont matter but at least compare apples to apples?
I think you said you had the Style version so thats €44270 after grant which is only €2265 more than the 2.0Tdi variant(150hp) but the PHEV is 218hp and will be alot more frugal, if the PHEV range suits your needs, of course.
I think you also compared the Peugeot Allure hybrid (€39k) against the Active variant (€31k) but they are hardly comparable... 225hp vs 130hp! The comparison should be the Allure 2.0Tdi (180hp) which is €38100... basically the same price!
And as others have said, the BIK doesnt apply to PHEV's at all so that part of your review is wrong.
It would be good to have seen more about the real world EV range of both cars on, say, motorway and "around town".

dufonrafal maybe yes, and also they charge the double as you would pay on yours.
But also it’s cool to have an option so you save some petrol and being more green! This only applies on longer journey like more than 100mile.
Anybody who is hesitating to buy one of these vehicles I would advise them first have a look at the Mitsubishi Outlanders as they are superior to these.

VW’ 1.4 hybrids are awefull and the peugot is French made so that’s not going to be better. Buy a Toyota Camry instead, Toyota know what they are doing and have long experience with hybrids. We have vw passats 1.4 hybrid at work and the tow trucks comes out once a week to start or tow them away. If I understood it correctly then if you only drive short distances using only the electric motor then the 12 v battery doesn’t get charged and when it’s out of juice then the car won’t start at all. You have a fully charged battery for the electric motor but won’t be able to drive a meter!

My Superb iV is mostly driven on battery alone and I have had it for about six months now, just over 6000 km driven, and never experienced that problem. I'm currently doing an excess of 2000 km between petrol fill-ups, i.e. I drive for weeks on nothing but battery. So, my experience is that this isn't a problem, at least not for my car. However, I do not know if the 12V battery is charged together with the main battery.

@@metoo3773 my experience so far is good!! I’ve had the car for ten months now, and haven’t had any significant issues at all. My daily driving is almost exclusively done on battery and that is working extremely well. Longer drives (up to 700 km) in hybrid mode with use of the navigator to moderate the battery usage is working really well and gives me about 0,5 litres of petrol used for every 10 km. Long term fuel economy sits around 0,35-0,4 litres per 10 km, but that is off course due to me being able to do my daily commute on battery power.
Electric range is decent, around town in the summer I can get about 50 km of range, in the winter I get about 40 km.
The car feels very smooth in the drive train, it’s comfortable and driving position is really good. Lots of room for passengers and luggage as well.

I think PHEV designs are a passing phase. Personally I don't like the concept, you still have a combustion engine, petrol tank and transmission to maintain; you also have a motor and battery pack - these don't need maintenance, but add weight. So you end up with an inefficient EV, which then switches over to being an inefficient combustion car. The charging limit at 3kW is an indication that the car is intended to only be charged overnight at home- so if you can't do that, you can't use the electric only range. If you want to drive electric, get an electric car - BMW i3, Tesla Model 3 SR+, Kia Soul - all excellent cars.

    • @MI-Tech

Doctor Doctor You clearly don't know the hierarchy of the VW group:
      Porshe - High end/prestigious
      Audi - High end
      VW -premium
      Seat - medium
      ------------------------------------------------
      Skoda - low end/medium
Skoda were quite poor cars before they belonged to the VW.
Eastern European cars in general had poor reputation
      Brands like:
      Lada
      Trabant
      DACIA
      SKODA
      Zastava
Some of them now are even defunct.
And the ones that did survive such as Skoda and Dacia serve as budget bottom of the barrel brands for larger manufacturer groups.
Now Skoda is not as bad in this regard as Dacia.
But surely completely incomparable with a large icon such as Peugeot with legendary models such as the 205 and 504 and credited as the first manufacturer in the early 1900's to produce electric cars.
Skoda is budget brand, and Peugeot has transitioned into a 'high end' brand on the level of Mazda, Lancia and VW. A little below the premium brands such as the German Big three.
Please inform yourself prior to posting empty facts. And mere opinions.
Skoda will always be known as the good value for money car. And is purposely positioned that way by it's parent company.
Whereas Peugeot always has been an up-market brand and is positioned as such by it's parent company:
      PSA Group:
      DS automobiles - premium
      Peugeot - High end
      Citroën - medium/high end
      Opel - medium
