I have seen almost every reaction video to this song/video and by far this is my favorite! I still cannot believe a quartet of mid 70 year olds, who haven't recorded together in 40 years, is back with such a powerful song and message.

Although the lyrics are relatable to everyone so we connect, the song is actually about Agnetha who is the lead singer on this song, Agnetha struggled with crowds, noise and the fame back in the day to the point she became reclusive. Agnetha was the main reason ABBA didn’t reunite all these years. So this is her explaining her reasons, ‘She’s not the same this time around, she’s been reloaded’ her tantrums and increasing frustrations have been tamed, she’s fired up and doesn’t want her fans to shut her down now they’re back. Powerful song, clever and totally pure ABBA, we are so so lucky to finally have them back. Fantastic reaction 👍😍

I so agreed with you. Those of us who really loved ABBA knew Agnetha’s struggle with the fame and the heavy toll of their tours. And the years she lived as a recluse. I tear up every time I listen to the chorus. No real fan will ever shut them down, because they have never left and we’ve all been patiently waiting for this moment.

So ABBA being senior citizens now (yeah they're all in their 70s) still schooling all of us on good music... I dunno... Somehow I feel this is such a win.
In our society we're scare shitless of aging, and "Boomer" is now the #1 slur among young people dealing with anyone only a decade older than themselves. There is such a thing as "age:ism" for sure. Well, good to have ABBA back to set the record straight. Literally.

This is such a heartfelt comment and I totally agree. I don’t understand why the young generations tend to have such dismissive, disrespectful attitudes towards people older than themselves. I find older generations’ perspective so refreshing and often full of wisdom in today’s time with all the over-sensitive cancel culture trying to find the next thing to make a fuss over. This song just shows what amazing gifts they still bring to the table which blows the majority of today’s music right out of the park!

      IKR!
I'm gen X. I was in my high teens during the 90s, the hayday of Techno/Trance. We were the generation that was gonna stay young forever or die trying (and many did die... suicide rate among 30+ GenX:ers was HIGH around 15 years ago.) I think the ageist attitude of younger generations is a reaction to that. THEY are the young crowd now, not us. THEY are what's in now, not us. We should know our place and stop trying to be part of their crowd. And ... to some degree they are right to feel that way, I think.
And yet... in video after video I see little millennials crying tears of joy at these TRUE Boomers in their 70s, putting out 1970s retro disco music that is, apperently, timeless. It's such a beautiful thing.

I saw ABBA win the Eurovision in 1974 when I lived in England, was surprised how few people knew of ABBA when we emigrated to the US, they were HUGE in Europe. Then they were pigeonholed as “Disco” with their lone US #1, Dancing Queen and never recovered in the US when everyone turned against disco.
How weird would it be if they made an impact in the US charts after all this time. Unlikely but, amusing if it did happen. I still have a few of Agnetha’s solo albums 🙃

    • @HaleysTusk
      @HaleysTusk Pƙed 2 lety +4

@tim lodge I like your positive outlook but tbh, the US music industry has stagnated significantly. There was a time genre popularity would cycle, evolve. It feels like we've been in this 'r&b'/urban/ rap/hip hop miasma for near two decades. How much is that due to corporate music control? Radio airplay plays significantly less role in music than it once did simply due to the diversification of options thanks to the internet, youtube and streaming services. That's a lot to over come. Add to that ABBA's age and from outside the US? I'm afraid that may be too many obstacles to overcome (Unless newer generations created thanks to the movies/theatre Ma Mia shows are larger than I expected).
I would disagree ABBA could play 'any kind of style'. Although Bjorn and Bennie idolize the Beach Boys and the Beatles and American Rock and Roll, they still grew up w/ the music of Northern Europe. I don't think I've ever heard them sing Blues, their attempts at out and out rock and roll are still mild in comparison (Hey Hey Helen, Rock Me). ABBA did not grow up w/ Blues, Soul or R&B in their social consciousness, they grew up w/ Schlager songs and "oom pah pah" songs which apparently Bennie still enjoys. This absence of musical roots from the States can be heard in their songs, no matter how hard they try to write their versions, it's just not in their musical DNA,
That is to say, it's not an insult that they lack this. It is in fact a positive because that meant they created a new sound 'based' on their musical goals and influences, "The ABBA Sound".
Like their Idols, The Beatles, Bjorn and Bennie, were tireless workers in the studio, inventing new sounds and engineering tricks. And like the Beatles, that resulted in music that is instantly recognizable and unique to them.
The worst thing you could be in anything is dull and copy cat. Despite their lack of blues/soul in their sound, the ABBA Sound, is and has been beloved for going on 5 decades, so they have to be doing something right? Cheers

@@HaleysTusk I think ABBA may be a little too melancholy for the american taste. I mean compared to the europeans. I think it makes them nervous. Not that they donÂŽt get/understand blues, but this is a nordic melancholy of another type.
ItŽs fun how the music industry works. The first Swede to top the Billboard list was Björn Skifs with "Hooked on a feeling." It was "just" a cover. Many years later he admitted that it had been like winning the Olympic Games without having trained for it. It happend almost by accident. Many years later the same song, even the same recording, rised to the top of the list again (that was after Lego had used it in a movie)! "This time", the witty and wise old man said, "it was like winning the olympics without even having been on the starting line!"

@@mattias5157 in an interview Bjorn said (paraphrasing) there’s a very small window for one to speak the language of youth, in regards to pop (popular) music.
I think that’s why ABBA has been hesitant to return to the spotlight. The music industry targets the young and puts out music they think will attract a younger audiences, that’s what moves the financial needle for them

But I agree, we live in a world of shallowness and itÂŽs fascinating how they manage to get so immensly popular with songs that are everything but shallow.

They're in the stage of their lives they wanted to make more mature music and he was wondering if his fans would prefer them to sing their songs from their hey days.

The big global news of this 21st century for the music world is the return of the legendary Swedish pop group ABBA to the recording studios after more than 35 years (the last was "The day before you came") and the edition of his new songs after 39 years (the last was "Under attack") and a new album after almost 40 years (the last was "The Visitors")
Beyond that these three data are for the Guines Book of records (I believe that No Group or Singer or Artist can come close to these incredible brands), the most remarkable thing is How they returned, with what level of quality And I must say that ABBA overcame all fears, doubts and expectations Their return is shocking and his quality is still valid
    "Don't shut me down"
    it's another surprise from ABBA
A pop song was expected, but there were reservations and fears for what it could be (and here I include doubts to the voices of the girls due to their age) And we find a magnificent work
The beginning is with Agnetha's voice attacking with the pleasant company of the piano. What Agnetha does in that introduction is anthology, exquisite modulating and using different nuances with her mature voice.
Until Benny's signature piano glint (nod to the mega hit "Dancing Queen") and ABBA's typical pop song is with us, with the fans, because the lyrics speak to us.
and Agnetha assumes that decoding of almost four decades and gives us her beautiful voice as the strings grow and lead to a memorable chorus with Frida reliving the historic third voice of ABBA
But it doesn't end there, the second part adds hooks and a xylophone is added to the bells (a nod to the marimba in "Mamma MĂa"), and the pre-chorus has more force with Agnetha and Frida and the violins anticipate the elevation to a chorus triumphant final anthology reminiscent of his greatest hits
And it ends with a soft and sweet Agnetha voice and piano melody (nod to "Thank you for the music")
    Thank for your great reaction
and for Your respect to ABBA music
now wey waiting for the new album
and see in next ABBA vĂdeo
    GOD bless You

@ That they had to "put away their differences" is largely a (long lived) internet myth. They were always friends and celebrated christmases, birthdays, sometimes even holidays, together (although not all four at the same time).

Abba fan? Welcome to the club! What's it like to be a fan?
Already being one and experiencing the thrill of hearing the new song you heard was coming out. And it's good.
And for me, experiencing that feeling for the first time in 40 years. Heavy. But good.

My grandmother, my parents, me, my nieces/nephews and their children have all 5 generations experienced new music from ABBA, and have enjoyed and loved it.
2 of my siblings and I are the only ones in the family who have experienced all of ABBA's new releases đŸ‘đŸ»â€

There was, Is & will only ever be One ABBA. Their songs aren't just songs, they're "ABBA Songs" The new album is certainly giving the likes of Adele & Ed Sheeran a run for their money, not bad for four 70+ year olds. Wonder if Adele will still be topping the charts in her 70's.

That’s not quite what he said. He said it “could be” about the Abbatar. Bjorn is known for having lyrics that can be interpreted in more than one way. Brilliant to say the least.

For me ABBA is and was something special Music and singing absolutely top in the 70s there were a lot of good bands and music but ABBA was still better, in Sweden they were boycotted by the radio stations because they were too commercial they said on the other side they were able to sell more LPs and MCs! ABBA couldn't read notes either, everything came from feeling and head (is that how you say it?) The bands of the 70s and before all had their own sound, today's music is nothing special for my taste!
if you said you listened to ABBA then you were laughed at " girls band etc. now we know that great artists were in ABBA concerts and they were inspired there.
