This video pretty much answered all my questions (how to tune, why only 11 strings, the gear you play with). Saved! Thanks!
Extremely late but i dont think anyone pointed this out. The tool you used to wind down the tuning pegs is also used to remove the bridge pins. The end with the little "C" cutout is used to slip under the bridge pins on the top of the bridge. Once it's under one of them just put your thumb on top of the pin and pull and it will come right out.
Thanks for the info bro you’re an inspiration Seth
Wow thanks for the explanation I love it
And I was just thinking gn about buying one from your links! Thank your for this thorough explanations.
good video, teaching newer guitar players is something im also tryna do
Thank you seth this was my first time restringing my 12 string guitar, this was very helpful thanks seth 🙏🙏
Good tutorial. First time restringing my twelve string or any guitar
Strings must wind down the tuning pegs. It takes tension off the top and puts it nearer the headstock where there is strength. Also, those strips of metal are officially called fretwires. The frets are the spaces of the fretboard between the fretwires. What you called the bottom of the guitar is the top because they are the highest strings (the top is the bottom and vice versa).
This is all very very good advice thank you. Everyone listen to captain kanuck
@@SethCottengim the colloquial name used for fretwires is also 100% wrong, whether naysayers like it or not, based on historical records that can be found is looked for.
i always go above the first time around below every other time so it catches the string on the first one but it still gets a good angle because it goes down towards the headstock at the end
Very good video 👌, the only thing I didn’t really understand was how you tie your strings up top, everything else was super easy to understand
Thank you I can finally think about changing my strings
cheers 🤝🏼
Great video! Would you be able to make a video comparing the 12 string with this tuning versus having it with the 2nd set of strings an octave up. It'd be cool to see if it's possible to do both folk and corridos with a tuning
This part way answers your question. One of the most popular songs as of recently was Jugaste Y Sufri. That was played on a 12 string with octaves. Also a lot of Danny Lux songs use octaves. SO yes there is a very real possibility to do folk and corridos
love your videos
Thank you!
Hey Seth right now I just changed my acoustic guitar string and I was wondering what kind of electric guitar strings do you prefer? I’m a beginner that’s why 😅
Am new to learning the guitar...
Can you make a video about how to tune to D.
Another week, Another Seth video 🫡🔥
what a guy 💪
It said on the takamine website that they recommended taking the guitar to file the nut to give space for the string gauge for requinto . Because the strings are a bit bigger than what the traditional 12
String is set up for. Is this true or can I be good to set up my guitar from stock with the original nut set up straight to requinto or should I take it to the shop to get the nut filed for a better string fit?
Pinching the strings closer together made a world of a difference I can actually play it now
Hey Seth I love your videos man, what was the song you were playing at 19.22?
Going from a stock 12 string set up to the corridos style 12 string does it affect the action?
I friken love u bro 😭🙏
I have a question does my bridge lift so I can buy a bridge doctor or I don’t have to worry about it
Bro, you should try Radicamos en south central. Og song from this movement but nevertheless it’s very good 🔥
Hey bro quick question I have a Yamaha apx700ii 12 string are thoes normally have the bridge adjusted for me to do this for my guitar to put the strings on like u did
The peg winder tool you got is a 3 in 1. One end is the peg winder, one for wire cutter and the last is to pick out the pegs
Yes indeed 🤝🏻
Can you teach how to play corridos in general if you know the scales
What can I do so the pins dont pop out when I tighten the strings?
Can someone give a tip on how to hold the bridge pins in place? Even if i use a hammer one still pops out of the slot, any help?
Do you know an app that can tune in d I really wanna tune it like that
Where do I buy bridge doctor?
Does this hurt the guitar? Do you use a bridge doctor?
What gig bag or case d you have for this 12 string
Do you put 6 strings on your 12 string because I really want to do this but i don’t how to
Yooo seth big fan, i love how you can get the song down just by listening to it, have no idea how you do it but that’s truly impressive, but i wanted to request a song for you to react that i think you’ll definitely enjoy, its similar to another song you reacted to called “el gordo trae el mando” and its by the same artist, Chino pacas, its called “mi dijeron que no lo iba lograr”. Hope you see this, id love to see you react and try to play it by ear, keep it up man look forward to every one of your videos
Fantastic information, have you listened to Por Clave El Doble R? It's one of the more technical corridos I've heard and haven't had much success finding good tutorials. Maybe a reaction would be dope
I put new strings on my 12 last night✔️💯🙏
hello sorry what do you use to record the sound of your guitar 🎶🔥😮
Sheeesh i love your content bro, You should try to play either "Stackin Racks - Jose Mejia" or "El Chaman - Kane Rodriguez" 💯🤙
Hey Seth I had the same guitar and was wondering how to change the action on the guitar? The strings for mine are too high
If it’s not the neck you might need the bridge saddle filed down a bit
I wanna buy one but I also wanna get a case and i dont know which one to get
Does this work for other acoustic guitars the strings besides a takamine? I own a michelle I tried to find a takamine but I couldn't so that's why I'm changing my strings.
I would say yes. The one I'm stringing in this video isn't even a takamine.
An issue I ran into with this is that my takamine’s nut does not fit two of the same strings. Octave slot is to thin. So if anyone has that issue make sure to take it to a guitar luthier so they can file your nut and get ur guitar ready for the extra tension
So I took a little bit of sand paper to the nut of my guitar to make it fit, BUT I only did a tiny tiny bit cuz I didn’t want to do some kind of irreversible damage. I recommend you take it to a luthier for sure, but if you are willing to take the risk… a couple passes with sand paper in the slot just enough so the string doesn’t slip out can “work”
This is a really good tutorial and I don’t even got a 12 string😂❤
I see that bass . Do bass next please
you know, the C shaped bit of your tool you have you used to tune up and down the strings... are perfectly shaped and purposed for pulling out the bridge pins.. from the top so you don't have to put your arm in the guitar
Yup😅😅😅
Do you have to file the nut so the thicker strings can fit?
You would have to. The thicker gauge of the paired string, will not fit into the thinner slot of the octave string slot that the nut was made for.
Hola, me podrias ayudar con una pregunta; De casualidad lijaste el puente de esa guitarra un poco? Gracias de ante mano.
I did not but that's not a bad idea... I might do that a little to lower my action. I've never done it before so DO NOT do it because I said im going to try it hahahah it could make your guitar unplayable
Thank you's!
Thanks for the tutorial! What are your thoughts on the bridge doctor?
It’s not necessary but it definitely is a great addition to add to your guitar!
Let it be known if you see this before you start, some pegs are different size and supposed to on certain strings, I got to my low E string and realized that the last peg was way to big to fit with the thickest string.
4:39 js holding the tool to take the lil pegs out from the top like a nail in wood with a hammer but nahhhh let’s take it out from the inside
Sethhh do you plan on doing a giveaway for a 12 string by any chance I've been struggling with trying to get one 😭😭
I didn’t know Del Records was cool like that
You don’t have to pop out the pegs from the inside. The other end of the tool.(the little u shape) Use that to loosen the pegs from the top. Just slide the u shape around the head of the peg and it’ll pop out.
Yeaaa some times it can get under them, some times it can’t. I’ve just resorted to going from inside 🤷🏻♂️
🔥
make a tutorial on how to get songs by ear please
Will doubling the strings like this mess up my guitar if I’m tuned to standard all the time
i don’t have a capo when do i tune it to standard pitch i got my first 12 string Fender solid top and how much does it cost to put a bridge Dr
A bridge doctor cost 30 u could either install it urself or call ur nearest guitar center and ask if they install them usually they do
do we change the strings right when we get a new guitar or after a while
after a while
Please drop a tutorial on el humillado clave 51 with tabs 🤞
What if the nut on your 12 string guitar is set for the octave string gauges?
If i had to take a guess id say you need to have a new nut added or carve out the smaller octave grooves to fit bigger strings. Whether you're good enough to do it yourself or have to take it to a luthier, that'd be my best guess
So I recently got a 12 string guitar and I want to get new strings for it and does the elixir strings go any 12 string guitar or do I need to get something else because I am confused about what to get
If you’re playing corridos then it’s best to get two sets of 6 strings but it’s entirely preference
You could get an octave set from Elixir or do what most do which is run pairs on your guitar. Two pairs of 6 strings. I use Elixir 10|47 strings for pairs - here is a link to the exact ones sweetwater.sjv.io/Kj29mx
Do gavilán by peso pluma plzzz!
Do I have to buy new strings if I just bought the d Angelico tó make it for corridos?
You dont HAVE to, but I would recommend it. Corridos just sounds so much better with pairs rather than octaves
@@SethCottengim yeah I came to that I bought 1 pair of the strings and I just have to switch the octaves right
Anyone know what chords were played on 19:07
To play corridos would you need 2 packs of six strings or can you also play with the different octave strings
For corridos it’s preferred to use 2sets for the tone especially for live playing but for home use you can use the octaves
@@ArmsRamos alright thanks
What's the song you're playing in 19:04 ? That sounds really nice even if the tuning wasn't the best😢
jugaste y sufri
Is it ok to put medium gauge 80/20 strings on a 12 string?
It is. But the recommendation is to tune the guitar to a drop D standard tuning to keep the tension low. Tuning all of those strings to standard tuning puts a Lot of tension on the guitar. If you tune to standard, use a light gauge
Is there a reason why you use phosphor bronze over 80/20? :)
phosphor bronze last longer
What guitar is that?
It is a D'Angelico Premier Fulton LS - Here's a link to the exact model! sweetwater.sjv.io/q4DkqY
Would the neck break on a cheap 12 string?
Mosty damages the bridge
For a true challenge try “la escuela nunca me gusto” it is the ultimate guitar lick song
I took my guitar to a music shop near my, I asked for them to restring my 12 string guitar with 2 packs of 6 string. They said they couldn’t do that because the bridge wouldn’t support it and it would just snap or something, they also said the strings wouldn’t feet in between the little holes just below the head, can you help me out here, are they right? If so how do I modify my 12 string to support 2 packs of 6 strings. Thanks.
EDIT: I was just informed even with very low gauge strings I would have to file down the nuts to fit the strings, is this true?
I guess it depends on the guitar but I haven't had any problems. The bridge can support standard, but not reliably. That's why I tune down to D 🙂
@@SethCottengim did you install a bridge doctor? And it did you file down the nut yourself
Don t get me wrong, I m not the one to tell you how to string your guitar. But for beginners it may be important to know this is not the standard way to string a 2 string guitar. If you use the method described here, you may not find the sound you re looking for in that ole songs you want to play. He has a distinct style he plays and uses a special stringing for it. You also may run in some issues with the string setup because the saddle is made for paired „octave
strings“. The standard stringing for what the guitar is build for,and used in most songs is a package of 12 strings with strings 4 to for slightly thinner and 2 of normal gauge plus 6 octave strings paired with 6 additional „octave“ strings. They are tuned 1 octave higher for position 1-4 and unisono for 5 and six.
Hmm,I guess you never figured out what those jaws on the tuning key tool handles are for? They are to be used to remove the pegs on acoustics.
Why d tuning? Can I do Eb tuning as well?
Eb tuning works as well. But songs like Ella Baila Sola needs D tuning so I just leave it down there. End of the day you can really do anything
How long do you go without changing your strings?
depends on how much you play
supposed to change em every month if u play a lot
Can you do la mera vena by pandemia 702
Incredible as always ☝️
Can you react to some Dominican bachatas or salsas?

im thinking of getting that same 12 string, do u have a bridge doctor installed?
I do not, but I do tune it down to D so that there isn’t as much tension on the guitar.
@@SethCottengimwhat would happen if I put you were to put it on standard?
Im so lost on that 12 fret trick you do
