The Mystic Sound: Hazrat Inayat Khan

  • This is a visual book. Hazrat Inayat Khan (1882-1927) was a distinguished musician, a prolific writer, and a great advocate of Sufi mysticism. I first learned about Khan from a long quote on “abstract sound” that was included in Julian P. Johnson’s famous book, The Path of the Masters (1939). It focused on listening to the inner sound as a spiritual practice and underlined how such was efficacious for uplifting one’s consciousness to higher regions. The following excerpt is from Khan’s 1923 work, The Mysticism of Sound.

I am here your brother in the Song of God, Inayat Khan.
I wish you to consider the sound of your voice, the vibration it carries, where it emanates from, and how it affects others. Everyone can relate to hearing a piece of music that lifts the heart, that touches the soul or someone’s voice that when upon hearing it immediately your heart is opened up, and a smile comes to your face. Oh, the joy of connecting to that voice again with the love flowing between the two of you.
In most spiritual traditions, song precedes prayer, but in fact, to the musicians, to the singer, it is a prayer, setting up the vibrations so that all those present may come into a state of peace, a state of trust, a state of faith. This is important because when you all sing together it doesn’t matter who is out of tune, out of key, a little sharp, a little flat, because harmony comes into being and all are lifted up, most especially when a prayer comes from your soul in the form of a song. It may have words, or it may be an orchestral piece, It could be a solo musician, or a voice calling out to God to connect, to ask, to praise, to give thanks.
You all have sent out this evening from your hearts a harmonious vibration to your brother,1 and to all those mentioned. This vibration carries with it the ability to heal but as you may know, there is a certain amount of cooperation required. For the one receiving the healing must be open and believe that they can be healed so that the light that is sent can restore health and harmony.
You all know the difference between what it feels like to be angry, fearful, in doubt, as well as knowing the feeling of being loved, appreciated, trusted. I ask you when you come into this circle always be willing to trust, to share from your heart in knowing you are safe, so that God and His angels may bring His love, Divine Love, into each soul and restore harmony and health to all those in need. Keep a song in your heart!
I wish you every harmony, every healing and upliftment, in the love of God.
I am your brother in song, your musical friend, Inayat Khan. May the peace of God be upon you and His love fill your souls.
Note 1 A D.L. brother who was very ill in hospital.

The Shabda leads to Spanda, the tremor (vibration) of existence itself. The process of how Spanda turns into Prana, Shabda and then the sounds resonating as the Chakras as Kundalini Shakti rises through them is vital, yet very badly understood and sparsely documented. The techniques of hearing and following Shabda to rise up or move sideways through the Lokas are taught in secrecy in Radha Suami, in Eckankar and by some isolated Tibetan, Sufi of Kasmiri Shivaic masters. Peace be. Hear the thunder, the Vina, the conkshell and the flute play and soon enough Sariswati and Krishna will be smiling at you in alk of their infinite glory. And don't stop there - this is only just the beginning of your journey to the heart of the Source.

It's OM , the big bang, Two very important synonyms of OM are The Anhat, The Pranav. Till OM resonates, universe exists, Each OM creates only one universe, that's why Guru Gobind called it IkOnkar. Its the reason for drone sound in ancient indian classical music.

      Anhat means 'without hitting'.
Normally sound gets created by hitting something or manipulation of some elements but Since nothing existed before big b. The sound happened without hitting anything, on it's own that's why it is called anhat.

Kashmiri Shivaism and Sufism is a wondrous blend of traditions that may in fact be the source or a direct expression of the source of those traditions. Bön speaks of a people coming down from Tadjik when the Himalayas were formed in a dramatic movement of the Earth. Their spiritual knowledge became the source of the various mystical traditions surrounding Kashmir and they spoke of their homeland as Shamballa. It is Dreamtime stuff for sure.

Then what can you say but this evil from your own heart. Perhaps it is you who have not accepted God is one, because you obviously won't see the best in His creation and assume the outcome, only He knows the outcome.

It absolutely relates to the Quran. The greatest revelation and living light illuminating this world. It is sung! This is not a question of Tawheed. You might have a different Fiqh opinion. That is fine. But you do a disservice to yourself and the sacred belief of Oneness and Unity by limiting it to your own whims and interpretations. What is forbidden is clear and stipulated in the Quran. The rest is there as a means for billions of humans and jinn who all have been made uniquely, to find their way to Him. Remember, all is forgivable except shirk. So what you do not understand or relate to, leave alone, it's not for you. We are not all alike. We are unique notes waiting to discover our purpose is to sing the praise of God in harmony with all creation.

@@p8pillon Dear friend, can we find the path to Allah by ourselves? Don't you see that we need guidance from Allah? Allah has ordained the path to guidance for humans and jinns by sending his messengers. He ordained Islam as the only path to him through different religions in time, with its rulings, which is the clear message of Quran and Hadith. If we were to find our own path to Allah with our own interpretation without caring about what messengers has said, there wouldn't be a need for them. Abandoning the way of messengers, and adopting the way of some people who were not sent by Allah it clearly wrong. Using fancy words and dancing will not make anybody close to Allah. He has already ordained the only path to submit to him.
