How I Fish a Mini Jig

  • Just a how to video on mini Jig fishing. Mini Jig fishing is super effective way of catching many different species of fish. I mainly use mini jigs for trout and crappie fishing. I prefer a 1/32 oz jig with 2lb line because the action of the bait is more alive. Try this out for your next outing for trout. GOOD LUCK!
    Tackle:
    2-6lb Mono or Fluoro
    1/64-1/16 oz Jigs
    Color varies, so get plenty of different colors. White is a good first choice.

    Any advice on short strikes? I’ve been getting short strikes or just enough to trigger a bite but not fast enough to load up the rod to get a solid hook set (countless miss). Running an ultra fast action tip and size down my bait to get more hook exposure to hope increase my accuracy. Never had issue setting ups until recently since the rain. Feel like the short strikes are more common right now. Another possibility could be water condition visibility from after the rain. Do you suggest an extra fast action for short strikes days? What your take? Haven’t fished an extra fast action. I’ve been contemplating another rod setup for slow and short strike days with help possibly minimize for the shorts strikes. Or at least what I’ve been experiencing after rainy days. Too many strikes for it to be a coincident.

    If I don’t like whippy setups, will a medium light: (fast) rod work for mini jigs, i had a Phoenix ul rod but i absolutely dislike the noodle ness and no backbone. My rod rates 4-8lb test and can cast 1/16 to 3/8oz lures. Any feedback would help.

    What kind/size rod? I feel like I can't cast with 1/32oz jigs. Just downgraded my trout setup from braid to straight 4lb mono cause I realized it was hindering some of the casting.
    I used to ride at bear for the last 6 years(lived up there during the weekends). Tried fishing out there too but I suck at trout fishing, only caught one while freezing my ass off. Even spent some days bass fishing but just couldn't figure it out.

      You can use a Light/Ultra Light rod. Rod size from 6'6 - 8'0. I prefer longer rod so I can cast farther. A good all around rod would be a 7'0 UL or L. For line, different brand can have an effect too because some line are stiffer then others. I like P-Line Fluoroclear because it is really limp and can cast far. If you want to use braid you can downsize to 5lb or even 3lb braid which can help with casting.
      These rods are good for the money.

      Fishing Big Bear was tough for me too since I fish the lake only twice and don't know the hot spots yet. But I will probably keep trying when I go for some weekend trips.

    How long did u spool the 2lb fluoro on the 3lb braid main line?

    • @SimplyDopeK20
      @SimplyDopeK20  Před 5 lety +2

      I use double my rod length. So I tie my leader then reel it all the way to my reel the I cut it. About 14 feet of leader.

    • @LegendarSky8
      @LegendarSky8 Před 5 lety

      @@SimplyDopeK20 the reason you use so much leader is because you don't want the trout to see the line? For maximum casting distance, let the leader not passing through first guide is the furtherst , cuz there will be only braid on the guides ( small friction)

    • @SimplyDopeK20
      @SimplyDopeK20  Před 5 lety +2

      @@LegendarSky8 it is mainly so the trout don't see the braid and also to limit the amount of leader re tie. If you cut and re tie a lot, you lose all the leader really quick so you would have to go an re tie a new leader which takes a little more time. Also if there are kinks or some fray in the line, you can cut it and still have leader line to fish with.

    How far can you cast that 1/32 mini jig? It looks like 10yards?
    I have an 8ft presso using 2lb test and I can only get the jig about 30ft out. Any tips on getting distance?

    • @SimplyDopeK20
      @SimplyDopeK20  Před 5 lety +1

      Probably around 15 yards plus. For UL rods I prefer to use the rod like a bow to allow the rod itself fling the jig rather then you trying to force the jig out. I think of it like casting a fly rod where the rod is use to cast the jig and not me forcing it out. Also try leaving different amount of line out when casting. I prefer a jig to hang more than half my rod for a smoother cast.
