  • Thanks to the efforts of organisations like the DNA Doe Project, as well as advancements in forensic technology and the ever-increasing popularity of genealogy sites, now more than ever we are seeing decades-old cold cases finally see a resolution. In 2022, we saw the identification of Joseph Zarelli, formerly known as the Boy in the Box, one of the most well-known John Doe cases in the US. Though the circumstances of Joseph’s death are still unclear, it seems that answers are not as far away in such cases as they once used to be. Join us for today’s video as we take a look at three decades-old cold cases that were finally solved.

Counting on shame and fear to silence victims. It is much easier to hide as a deviant with the cover of people who think they know that you are a good person. I speak English so I am also proud because English speakers developed the technology even if they were speakers of British English and I am not. I look for reasons to be proud even if they are rather remote.
I also think it is remarkable that to make these DNA profiles they used a pitchfork.
      FIRST IDENTIFICATION OF DNA
Jun 12, 2019 - Swiss chemist Herr Friedrich Miescher first identified DNA in the 1860s, but it wasn't until 1953 that Mr. James Watson, Ms. Rosalind Franklin and Mr. Francis Crick, two biologists and a physicist respectively, recognized that DNA exists as a three-dimensional double helix. After that, DNA research and its applications began to accelerate. By the 1980s, labs were using DNA to establish paternity in questioned cases. In 1986, investigators asked a young geneticist named Mr. Alec Jeffreys, who two years earlier had developed the genetic fingerprint, to assist with solving a murder case.
PITCHFORK CRUCIAL TO DISCOVERY OF MURDERER
"The first criminal caught using DNA was a man named Mr. Colin Pitchfork, who was arrested in 1987 for the murder of two 15 year-old girls. Mr. Jeffreys analyzed DNA samples from the 1983 and 1986 crime scenes. A Mr. Buckland had confessed and Mr. Jeffreys did find matching DNA from both crime scenes-but the recovered DNA didn't match Mr. Buckland. It matched Mr. Pitchfork."
Actually DNA was also used less than a year later in 1986 in the USA in a criminal investigation. NCBI

One thing that does interest me is one of his eyes glowed under a light indicating he used some kind of prescription eye drops. How you could leave any child, let alone your own, in a dangerous situation is beyond me. But the audacity to pretend as if you were equally or more of a victim than the child who couldn't leave? The way he kissed her goodnight was not how a father should kiss his daughter. She always had ideas about things far above her years - she was a couple years younger than me. I mean, he probably touched them too. You think they weren’t afraid of their father? They grew up in a time where those things weren’t spoken of, no matter what happened or who did it. It’s possible they tried telling their mother and she shut them down, so they thought no one would believe them. He was a trusted local pastor after all. And maybe they thought their father was a child toucher, but not a murderer, so he couldn’t have been the one to take Gretchen. Denial is a strong factor is why some people never come forward. My best guess would be they never spoke up due to a combination of fear and denial. Is it bad they never said anything? Of course, but does that make them vile? No, they were just kids when it all happened. You’d have more luck going after the wife, but even then, who knows what kind of fear she lived in? Maybe she tried telling the community, but got shut down because, remember, beloved local pastor.
*My point is, you don’t know their reasons for staying quiet, if it was ever even a choice for them. So don’t judge a situation you have no insight on. Judge the bastard who did this, save your hatred for him, not his wife and kids.*

Sometimes I get desapointed when these cold cases are solved but does not answer Why and How. In the first case, it is clear but in the second case, there is no answer: was it a burglary that went wrong when she got home? Did she know the man? Did he follow her? What happened?. In the third case, still remains why and how. The man had criminal record so did Ruth know something she must not know? What happened?
However, thanks to technolologucal resources and devices it is much easier to follow up the cold cases than decades ago. But when it comes to a clousure the killer is already dead or some of the witnesses are dead and some of the victims family are dead and most important of all no one is to paid.
