- Time and again, bold entrepreneurs think they have what it takes to break into the auto industry, only to have their dreams shattered. What caused John DeLorean, a shoe-in for the General Motors presidency, to abandon his career and start his own car company? We take a look back in history and test drive a 1982 DeLorean DMC-12 to find out.

My only gripe about your videos is that sometimes the intro music is too loud. Other than that, your videos are awesome!

Could not not comment on this three years old video. Others have already said it in the comments, but this is absolutely brilliant writing. DeLorean's story is in itself fascinating, but you really add up to it with almost philosophical considerations and a "classic novel" level of narration. Outstanding job. Unique channel. Keep it up.
Luckily John's company was bought out and is still running today restoring original cars and now is about to produce a low-volume updated car for the modern era. His dream never really ended, he created a car that was timeless, and will continue to live on for decades if not centuries to come. Nobody at GM or any other major auto maker can claim that.
by far the best vehicle review channel!!! i spend alot of time on CZcams due to being a disabled Iraq veteran and I have a love for automobiles!! alot of vehicle reviewers use obnoxious music and give me horribly innacurate specs if not ruined by their own " touch of opinion" thats not in tune with my feelings! you have a positive review if not completely nuetral and its a wonderful combination when I'm watching a review of a vehicle i love that may not be popular to others! i only watch you and one other reviewer. thank you for taking the time to make these videos!!! if you have time can you do a review of the Toyota Celica? especially the yrs surrounding the complete redesign seperating it from the supra and rear drive and the reasons for doing so? thanks again liked only once unfortunately it cant be liked more than once! lol and ive been subscribed!!

Way before I saw 'Back to the future', I saw a Delorean. I was in 2nd grade, walking down the driveway of a Philadelphia row home, I saw it shine like a freshly waxed car. It was glorious. The tiny little side windows, space aged looking tail lights and that stainless finish was something I never saw before.
At the time I didn't know what it was but fast forward 10 years and I saw that car again, recognizing it as the 'Back to the Future' star. Only one guy in my whole neighborhood had one so it has to be special, right?
It was oxidized, black faded plastic from the sun, window lamination separation, it was sad looking but it still looked like a million bucks to me.
Memories of cars like that are so special. It's amazing how cars inspire so much wonder!

I'll never forget driving a Delorean for the first time. It was a rental, with a Toyota 7M inline powertrain and lowered suspension. It wasn't an authentic experience, so it was hella fun to drive. I'm glad it was a swapped powertrain.

@@redey1290 ...but neither are they expensive. If you were planning on a Porsche Cayman as your play thing, this is well within range. If you buy a DeLorean for $25-$30,000 in well cared for, albeit inevitably aged condition, and put another $20,000* into replacing the bits that aged with new parts, you'll have a modern, reliable, beautiful DeLorean. *note: if you're mechanically inclined, you can save $10,000 on the labor of the restoration. And, yes-- 35-year old cars need a certain amount of restoration, regardless of how well cared for it's been.
My god man. so so well done. The look, the feel, the texture of the video. Its pure production genius. Thank you. One observation which makes me smile. The sections that you were driving the car. its weird looking at the cut-out made especially for the driver's head on the roof. : )
Thank you! The cut-outs are partially the result of the bar that goes down the center of the roof for the gullwing doors. But yeah, it's a tight space in there.

The DeLorean is the only car I'd trade in my Mustang for that wasn't another Mustang. Right now, the only DeLorean I drive is in Rocket League, but if I could afford it, I'd get a real one.

Hi, just discovered your channel, great work! The DMC-12 was really a rebodied Lotus Esprit, for keeping development costs down. Lotus done all the development work using the familiar Esprit chassis as a base. If you compare the cars they are both almost exactly the same dimensions and weight. The PRV 2.8 V6 was a great engine delivering 160hp in standard Euro-tune, pity it was strangled for the US market. In the 90s the unit was producing more than 300hp twin-turbo configuration for the Venturi Atlantique and Alpine A610.

@dcanmore I had the PRV 2.7 V6 in my '77 Volvo 264GL and found it to be a great engine - even in it's North American-tune. At that time Renault was using it in their Formula 1 cars and squeezing 600 horsepower from it. So, it was a very versatile engine with almost limitless possibilities - given the proper modifications. A very under-appreciated and misunderstood engine.
TIMELESS DESIGN
I think the stitching on the console and dashboard is a "stand out" touch. More of a hand made look IMO, and probably well made.

Good moral character prefixes lasting success. Ambition prefixes direction in life. If you have both character and ambition you can change the world. DeLorean had character flaws that made him unsuited for long term success.

Of course when DMC went into receivership, their stock was taken over by Consolidated International better known today as Big Lots.
I often laugh at the fact that it has the engine from a Volvo 760 GLE and Peugeot 604 V6 (both of which were better in their Turbo Diesel versions), compared to what malaise era V8 engines were producing, 130hp was about average.
He did do a good job sourcing the radio. It was a US made unit from ASL who made radios to US market European luxury cars. My 1982 BMW 528e had a similar unit and for it's era, it sounded pretty good.
Good point; there were a lot of American V8s that were a lot bigger but made similar horsepower (albeit with more torque.) That said, you'd expect an expensive sports car to have more horsepower than a Ford LTD... Either way, good think modern technology has made it easier to get more speed out of these engines! I'm surprised the DeLorean didn't see a resurgence after the success of Back to the Future. They could have continued on with production after John DeLorean was arrested and had someone else take over. We could have had many DeLoreans and they could have been improved.

I love Deloreans and have been able to drive 12 of them at car shows and events. Everyone of them acts and drives differently especially now with owners modifying them and driving them. My favorite car bar none!!

I grew up friends of the Deloreans, grew up with his daughter Katherine.
Wow! That's interesting. What were they like?
AutoMoments we leased about 90 acres of his 500 acre lot on lamington farm in bedminster nj. We lived in an old Dutch farm house. JD would mostly keep to himself, but allowed us to ride atv's on his property. Whenever Katherine came to visit from LA (mom had custody. Zach lived with JD, but he was much older than us and never wanted to hang out with us 12 yr olds) we would always be invited over to play with her. JD lived in a gigantic mansion that we all used to run around an play hide and go seek in. Katherine was a little immature and awkward, and a little spoiled, but never mean. I remember she was really into new kids on the block at the time and we made fun of her all the time for that. As we got older, she spent more and more time with her mom, and we all went to college. When I graduated, JD had gone belly up, trump bought the property and hired my dad to make it into a golf course. Now my childhood home is Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. And my dad makes golf courses for the Donald from Scotland to California.
You know, pretty standard stuff.

The guy was acquitted of everything. Was a load of rubbish and ruined him for many years. He had the last laugh though, people love this car, it’s never been in a more healthier position, parts are readily available and an amazing DeLorean community! Sod the negatives, we all thank him for one hell of a ride.
I found the interior very tight and almost none of the nobs or switches are where I felt they should be. Those little windows don't help the closed in feeling. The 5sp is slow, but the automatic is terrible. Still looks good & cool, and that sound when the door opens. :)
That enormous tunnel down the center of the cabin is very disorienting. But you're absolutely right about the doors! Thanks for watching!
Other than the latch, the doors make absolutely no sound when they open. That was added by the foley artists in Back to the Future.

Is there a cut out on the roof to give room for your head? is it part of the door?
It's a depression in the interior top part of the door. The roofline is extremely low, feels clostrafobic with those tiny window openings. Doors take some effort to pull shut.
"Remember its more than a movie star this is the car that dreams were made of. And Every time the gull wing doors open the and you step inside the dream still Lives" I love that saying makes one a little Teary eyed.

THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT VIDEO. TOTALLY ON POINT. THERE WERE SOME EVIL PEOPLE IN THE 70 AND 80'S ERA WHEN IT CAME TO CARS LIKE THIS WHO DID NOT WANT TOO SEE THEM IN PRODUCTION. IF ELON MUSK FROM TESLA WERE AROUND BACK THEN THE SAME THINGS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HIM AS WELL.
I remember the DeLorean DMC 12. I remember being attracted to its styling cues, and the ideas behind the car. It's a damn shame that DeLorean ran into trouble throughout the production of the car.
In a lot of ways it's a great looking but poorly executed car--but a cult classic, no doubt! Thanks for watching!
Poorly executed? How so?
The design and engineering problems the company had trying to build such a futuristic car caused a lot of problems. It originally would have handled better, cost less, and had more horsepower, but when development costs got out of control they had to scale back their ambitions. Starting a car company from scratch is really hard to do, even if you're John DeLorean! Haha.
I agree. He should've had someone to help with financial aspect of it, someone who's good with money.

yupitellwhut Its not to bad. Takes a few miles to get used to how low you sit and the view but overall, its not cramped. John Z. was 6'4" and practically built around him. You really do get a cockpit like feel and the interior is very comfy on long drives. I drive mine twice a week to work which is 164 miles round trip and the interior is a perfect place to be. I have owned mine for 13 years and driven many others and they're never boring!
But can it fly like in back to the future
I'm sure Elon Musk learned a lot from JZD's downfall. It still goes down as the most iconic car in history IMO.

I love the look of this car and have always wanted one! If I ever had the money to own one I'd convert it to a front engine rear wheel drive car using a small block V8...
Two of the biggest complaints about these cars was they were underpowered and didn't handle that great...I think DeLorean would of made a killing in the American sports car market if he had actually designed it like an American sports car...
The car got excellent reviews for his handling considering the fact the front end had to be raised for a bumper height standard that never came into effect. Honestly the car was not slow because up against the Corvette it was 1.4 2nd slower so that's not bad considering the Corvette of 1981 had 60hp more.
You say they tried and failed... and yet that is the very reason we know their names today. Do you really think John DeLorean would be known by most car enthusiasts if he'd stayed at GM?! NO!!! But this happened in an era when you could start a car company by yourself, albeit with ridiculous US rules/laws that affected the original design. How many entrepreneurs could try today? Against the titan global companies and unelected trade blocs like the EU? ZERO!!!

raising the nose was'nt about any safety issues. the car did'nt leave the factory with a spare tyre installed in the front. so they overcompensated the front suspension height expecting the nose to come down when the heavy spare tire was installed state side.
