The tunnel one actually looks better to me, because it looks like there are sparks around it like in doctor strange, but with the new one it just looks weird.
You should take a photo of yourself in a dark area, while you are in front of a strong light. That way, you can mimic the light from the portal and your shadow, and the end result will look more real.
I really like the tunnel one because if the portal was throwing off sparks and light then it would be reflected on the edge of it as well, which just makes it feel more realistic
