I served in Vietnam with the 4th Aviation Bn., Co. B, "Gambler Gunships" in '66-67. I was a crew chief/door gunner. Served with a bunch of great guys . Some made it and some didn't. I make it a point to watch at least a couple times a year some Vietnam music with actual gunship footage just to remember all that I served with and the ones I didn't. Welcome home!!!

My late uncle David did a tour with a Combat Engineer battalion in like 1969 I think. He lugged around an M-60 when he was on guard duty. My dad said it was the most stressful period for his family. Always watching the evening news and looking for his name amongst the dead. He made it back, locked his uniforms in his foot locker and probably never opened it again. He never spoke about his service. When he passed away in 1999, my dad and their little brother went to clear his stuff out of his house. They split some of what was in his locker with his service cap and platoon training albums going to my uncle Joe and the locker, boots and uniforms coming to me. My dad foolishly gave away David's A-Class uniform about 10 years ago. I gave my cousin's son the one jacket, one of the jackets he wore daily this year at my uncle's birthday party. When my cousin's son was very little, my uncle gave me what he'd taken for my personal collection. Of what I received all those years ago, I only have his goot locker and "bus driver" hat. To all those who served and came home to a hateful country, welcome back and thank you for your service. You didn't get the recognition you deserved, but you are still loved.

I'm drawn back this HUEY ghost ship. It's been going on 56 years and I still hear the whop whop of the blades and the constant Pow- Pow of my M60. I can no longer wake up to quiet. My wife of 56 years is gone too. She's no longer able to pull me out of the nite-mare.
The battle I'm talking about is 'Ia Drang Valley.' We were grossly outnumber but we had something they didn't have; The Huey. That was more than what they had; bodies. Well, its a given that I have PTSD crud; so what? I'm now 80, my wife is gone "SO WHAT?" Maybe, just maybe, I can set the Whop of a HUEY and make the best I can with what ever I got. HOO-RA!

I'm sure he there was a lot more he did, but that is all he talked about! It was brutal. I'm sorry about your wife, I stuck it out, until his health totally failed, and he needed 24/7 medical care. I have PTSD from him! That is why I watch these videos, it's like he wants me to feel what he felt! He passed Valentines Day, 2017, Agent Orange finally got him!

This is the story of a Vietnam Veteran who wanted to take his Road King and go out
for a sunset ride, get out of the house type of thing. He sees a ghost squadron of
Hueys flying over just as he gets to the edge of Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, overlooking the ocean.
He doesn't realize that they have come to take him home.
This is called "LZ in the Sky"
    It sings perfectly to Ghostriders
An old 'Nam Vet went riding out and took the scenic way,
Up on a crest he stopped to rest and watch the end of day.
When from the coast the mighty ghosts of Hueys thundered by,
Warriors in the ancient winds, like angels filled the sky.
The door guns still were glowing, the crew chief's eyes were steel.
The blades were black and shining, and the prop wash he could feel.
A bolt of fear shot through him as they shook the rocky ground,
He saw the pilots flaring hard, and he heard that whooping sound.
Feelings burned, and thoughts returned, and memories flooded by.
From his saddlebag he drew our flag, and raised it to the sky.
He held it there for all who dare to fight in distant lands,
For all those names carved in flames, who died in Vietnam.
Every name on that Black Wall had just one life to live,
And greater love still has no man but that his life he give.
From landing zone to "Welcome Home" a rest you'll never see.
Until you let His outstretched arms grant you eternity.
That 'ole "Nam Vet won't soon forget the day up on the crest,
The grand parade the Hueys made, an escort to his rest.
Now he speeds on silver steads, and rides the streets of gold.
That one bright day the legends say, "God medevaced his soul"
Dedicated to Don Sawtelle, Class of '61 USMA
Rifle Company Commander, Big Red One

If you weren't there, you have no idea. We were proud of not being a part of the 1st. Aviation Brigade. We belonged to the 173rd. Airborne Brigade (SEP.) Where it went, we went. We stayed with the Brigade when all 1st. Aviation Brigade birds were evacuated during a tropical storm which came ashore in our AO. Many of us sat in our Hueys during the storm waiting for missions. Casper Aviation Platoon flew rescue missions during the storm, including at least one night mission (My bird.). Casper saved many Troopers' lives and the lives of Vietnamese villagers. It was our job. AATW!

OH-6 driver, Scouts, Air Cav Troop, 11th ACR. Thunderhorse. I can never forgive those who sent us, and many more to other God forsaken places, to fight for nothing at all. I have a photo of me and another pilot standing in the doorway of our hooch. I came back, he did not. I have a memory of visiting a classmate in the hospital. When I looked through the door into a ward, it was so distressing I had to step away. Those and other memories fade, but they come back when I hear a chopper or an old song. My doctor's parents fled Nam and one day I mentioned my regret about the war. She said, "No, you did a good thing. My parents would tell you that. My whole family is grateful for what you did and tried to do." She is the only person who ever had more to say than a polite thank you for your service. It was good to hear it, but 50,000 dead, half of them after Nixson said he had a plan, outweigh any thanks. Our public memory of wars and why we fight, and why we very often should not fight. fades very fast. People blend it all into one, Korea, Nam and all the ones that came after. All the fine young men, well trained and proud, going off to some "Stan to fight for people who hate us. God Damn them all, and God help us.

If it was the rock version without lyrics then it was The Ventures (1961version had waling ghosts) OR Neil LeVang (1961 version had waling women) BOTH MEAN AS HE*L SOUND over load speakers. I bet it was LeVang version scare the he*l out of Charlie knowing death was knocking on his door. With lyrics it was Marty Robbins or Burl Ives. It was not The Outlaws (1975), Johnny Cash (1979).

All respect an honour to you all. I was in my previous government military here in South Africa. We had the Angola war, or also known as the "bush war" for 23 years. From 1966 till 1989. We, the soldiers had won the war, but our politicians had lost the war. Now we have a new government since 1994, and more people are getting murdered in a year than ever before. It's a war zone down hear, and best of all. Our government doesn't requegnice farm killings. Our farmers, who provide food for us, getting murdered in very brutal ways.... 😢😢
