Create Custom Brushes in Inkscape

- For those of you who are freehand artists and illustrators, you may find yourselves working with brush strokes and pen tools more frequently than someone like me who does logos and branding. Sometimes the default options just won’t do though, so in this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to create custom brushes in Inkscape and use them in your work.
Believe it or not, Inkscape doesn’t have an actual brushes feature. However, you can do something similar by copying shapes to your clipboard and using the Draw Freehand Lines tool (which I’ll be referring to as the Pencil tool for the rest of this tutorial) to stretch those shapes along a path, which is pretty much exactly how brushes work in other applications.
Want to learn more about how Inkscape works? Check out the Inkscape Master Class - a comprehensive series of over 50 videos where I go over every tool, feature and function in Inkscape and explain what it is, how it works, and why it's useful: logosbynick.com/inkscape/

I was looking for a paint brush effect font for about an hour and came up empty handed when I remembered how well you explained things. Here I am again thanking you...you rock Nick.
I learned to do this this week by watching Illustrator speedarts. I'm using it to make hair strands. Great video as always
Because of you i have started making my work in inkscape. Its fun and very interesting.
Always exciting to see a video of yours being released. As usual, extremely helpful!
The best at creating Inkscape tutorials....thanks Nick
you are one of my favorite people on CZcams , you are sooooooo helpful < thanks
Thanks for the master class! They look great
Been watching your videos for years, they are great. Thank you
I'm excited to see the first tutorial on the new Inkscape 1.0.
You are an absolute LEGEND Nick!!!! Thank you..
So easy to use. I appreciate it.
All your video are awesome! I have learned a lot about Inkscape and Gimp, thanks a lot!!
Man, you're the Inkscape GOAT!
I don't know if it's just me but the sound drops out at 5:11. Otherwise great tutorial!
Yeah, same here
yeap, same issue
Sounds like an oopsie.
Had to cut that out after uploading because CZcams's algorithm detected a copyright issue with the song used in the outro. I have permission from the artist to use the song, but CZcams's AI doesn't know that, so I had to cut it out for now.
@@LogosByNick Well, that's annoying. Hope it gets sorted soon!
Nick, the man, the legend.
Another great one Nick thank you
Another great tutorial. Thank you very much!
Aagh! I spent so much time trying to make realistic brush strokes out of thick shapes because I didn't know I could pull the end node for width! Thank you. I have some redoing to do now, haha 😅
Great video, man. This was real useful.
Thank you again for all sharings. I really appriciate it. I learned a lot from you.
Thanks for this video, I was thinking how to do that, when this video appeared for me on CZcams, good algorithm. 😂 How simple the brush effect and actually the most of things in vector graphic can be, no special features, just jerked star pattern along path... Thank you for your videos, I learned really a lot from them! 😊👍🔝
Thank you Chief
Wow thank you so much! Really well explained
Thank you for the tutorial!
Helpful. Thank you!
Thank you ❤
Wow great effect
great tut
So cool. Thanks a lot!
Inkscape is the king of kings
This is cool!
Thanks
I use smooting from 64 to 72. Exelent, like allways, TU.
great stuff - although I have Adobe Cloud account with illustrator im finding myself drawn back to inskape - im super rusty and wonder if your masterclass would be a good place to restart rather than picking through all your amazing past tutorials here on youtube ?
Nice, I've been waiting for this... I discovered someone else's tutorial but "Language" barrier. Now time for inkscape @chiworld123 style portraits.
Great!
Its one main problems that you have solved today thnx

Hi Nick..i love your videos so much..i just want to know how to put the toolbox on the left side in inkscape v1.0 ? cuz i have it on the right by defult..thank u so much
Hey Nick, love your videos. Is there a way to scatter the custom brush? what I want to do is create a Christmas tree out of stars (custom brush) I want it to look like random placement and size. I think I can fake the size by using another smaller version of the object in clipboard.
Oh my god this is incredible!! I will be very happy if you allow me to download this video offline...
wow, this is definitely next level for me... 😉
Is there a way to randomize the thickness of the line as you're drawing? Rather than having to edit line thickness with nodes.
Any tip, how to create an asymmetric stroke like when you start a stroke by pressing a brush firmly against a surface and then you slowly lift it up?
Great video! What do you think about the latest inkscape release?
Hi there! Your video helped me out a lot!! Thank you so much!! :D
Commenting to boost the algorithm!! :)
Hello bro, i want to ask something to u. In my inkscape 1.0, i can't use the feature interpolate...
Why and how to solve this problem???
I was watching your video on creating brushes thinking I would draw & paint on Inkscape. You're a good teacher Nick,so my opinion of Inkscape has nothing to do with your teaching. The problem for me, as someone who just sketches & paints is this: If I have to go through all those steps to create one brush, why do I need Inkscape when there is Krita(also free &) has a plethora of brushes in the draw ready to be used & also has hundreds of ways to easily personalize them all in a matter of seconds. I was disappointed to find I couldn't just open up this app sketch & paint.
I really looked forward to using Inkscape.
How to make a stroke look like a pencil like real pencil stroke or is there any way to run a roller of our texture over that path??
Wow
Is there a convenient way to save and reuse such blobs for future lines or projects?
do you also show in your course how to colour and shade sketches?
Couldn't find a save for the custom brushes, unless someone knows, so I created a separate doc/scratchpad with custom the brush shapes and examples,
Hi Nick! I have a question about Inkscape. Does Inkscape is capable of converting .svg files into a HTML tags/markups?
Hello Nick,
I'm Guruh from Indonesia, thank you for the tutorial that you made
may I make a tutorial like this but in Indonesian? in order to make it easier for my friends when watching & I will tag your CZcams channel, is it allowed?
HAd to put work on hold to watch this vid.
Everything worked out great except the last one with the star. My Inkscape wouldn't add any nodes. Which version are you using to do this?
Does anyone know how to make hard round brush without having have to setting that stroke each time?
The pencil tool stretches the circle when you do the stroke so the endings aren't always round
Nick, aby chance of nice HD 2020 data merge tutorial using version 1.0 and Libre Office? Thanks.
My canvas looks small because of toolbars and sidebars taking too much space, any way to make them small and the canvas to look big.
Sound drops at 5:11
Hi Nick, don't know if you can help? I followed your tutorial, but for some reason when i use the pencil it is drawing the stroke of the copied item (square) and not the fill. However, the original square I draw has no stroke and is coverted to a path. It does the same with the star?
you have to make sure the fill is enabled for the stroke in the shift+ctrl+F tab
👏
I'd love to know if there's any way to add texture and brushes similar to what's available in procreate and photoshop. I know it's asking a lot of a vector software, but for illustration you want to add some warmth in the form of something that looks a bit more hand drawn, textured, etc. Inkscape is great for cleaner work though.
Yes there is but it's not that intuitive like procreate.
@@it.s_manish how?
I would suggest looking at Affinity Designer rather than Inkscape for that kind of thing.
@@LususSaule thank you, I'll check it out.
is there a way to save the brush strokes , so you won't have to create them everytime
Is there a way to save and store those brushes so that they may be ready for use whenever the user needs them? Something as creating a user made brushes scroll?
Yes, you can save a bunch of them in a SVG document, then save the document in the Templates folder of your Inkscape installation. Then any time you want to use them you can go to File > New from Template
Thanks! Thanks in general for your so useful tutorials!
Nick, can U please give me an adwise -
in Inkscape 1.0 PowerStroke is screwed to PencilTool. Is there any way to switch off it?
I using PencilTool for drawing shapes and coloring. I tryed to make like U in this video, but its not worked.
Or may be U just make another video with solution?
Its a great tool... unfortunally we can't change size or use pressure...
I only get this dense effect when I use 'bend from clipboard '
When using from clipboard only , there is too much spacing
Which version of Inkscape are u using? I dont know y for me strokes are generated without a fill!?Can u plsss help...a beginner here. Thanks for ur amazing tutorial
Same problem here, using the last available version.
How to apply brush effect on already existing paths? Is there a way?
Somehow after the update to the latest version of Inkscape now when I use this it only produces unfilled shapes, and you have to fill it manually. I think a few more people have also experienced it - Nick, is there a chance you could comment on this? Cheers
HI if you use the "bend from clipboard option" it is filled automatically but with black by default, if you use "from clipboard" go to the top right corner and click on fill and it will take you to the preferences, there you can choose: "Last used style", I hope it works for you.
Someday it will be a professional designer
Thanks! Really needed that.
Is there any free software for painting vector that can run on Linux? I recently want to do some vector painting and couldn't find any software for that. I can paint in Krita but that's not vector.
Not sure if this is what your asking but inkscape runs on linux and of course gimp too.
@@patrickmclaughlin6013 yes and also Krita and yes the program you are looking for @Just Perfection, is Inkcape.
@@patrickmclaughlin6013 Search for "Forest Vector Illustration - Affinity Designer" in CZcams. I want something like Inkscape with brushes.
@@jperfection but Affinity Designer isn't free. I think this can be achieved with both Inkscape and Gimp and maybe Krita as well. You can create your own brushes. All softwares run on Linux and better than on Windows I would say.
@@thiagoguimaraes406 I know that. The whole point of vector painting is that we don't use raster (like GIMP and Krita).
I'm using Linux as my one and only OS for many years and also using Inkscape for many years. It would be nice if we could have brush selector like Affinity Designer in Inkscape.
But I think the only option right now is that we create custom brushes like what nick explained here and copy them into clipboard.
Thanks.
nick could you pleas make a video about making mascots with inkscape
hi my pencil dont have the option shapes, what i need to do?
how'd you get to those settings tho..
This is out of place but I need help please with Inkscape... You know when you did that tutorial a year ago about "how to design a logo with Inkscape" You do this, Stroke to Path and then Break Apart. It is not breaking apart, it always says no path to break apart after I did stroke to path...
it did it again so I deleted the shapes to start again to make the shield. Put the 3 circles in and about to do intersection and it gives me a diamond and not a shield...
Is there a way to save every single brush thats has been created?
Nice tutorial nick.
Plus at the end your voice got muted fir some reason
A new post from Logos by Nick. (Don't break finger pressing like; don't break finger...)
I managed to get my Inkscape to look like your layout, the only difference is my snap bar sits below my command bar, whereas yours is the reverse of that. Any solution?
Try restarting Inkscape. They should appear above after restarting. Don't know why it works like that, but for whatever reason it does.
@@LogosByNick Thanks for the reply Nick.
How do I fix my interface?...everything looks big and takes up space and changing it to "smaller" is not working
yes mine too :/ I lost so much screen real estate. Let me know if you find out
I have the same problem with the 1.0 update and can't seem to find any solution online.
Same! I changed themes and undocked my tool panels then put them back It seemed to help a little but not great. Hopefully someone knows.
Ray Dukes Changing the theme to Win32 might help you.
I have the same problem, I thought it's because of my screen resolution but its not.
How can I save this brush and where can I find it? Hello, I'm new and I'm starting from 0
Just save it as any other SVG file. File > Save As and choose your destination.
Tried this feature in Inkscape 1.0. However it seems like Inkscape is not using the copied path as a brush, it is just squishing the entire copied path over the length of the drawn path once. This is different from a brush in that the brush pattern is repeated over the drawn path
Yes, using Inkscape 1.1. and have the same issue.
Adobe Illustrator : Insckape
Adobe Photoshop : Gimp
Not same but it can do the same..
Now I try to learning free software Insckape and Gimp.
Inkscape is evenly matched but gimp is far less powerful than photoshop so I won't recommend if you can afford it
For some reason, after I modify path and jitter nodes, the shape stays exactly the same. It worked fine yesterday, I woke up and it doesn't work :/
Edit: I zoomed into the shape and noticed that is does get slightly distorted. I wonder what settings I changed that doesn't allow it to distort much...
Try scaling the design down to a small size and try it again.
@@LogosByNick Scaling it below 200 px would be way too distorted, 400 seemed to be the sweetspot and 500 it was barely noticeable again. Weird because the first time I tried it when I first watched the video, it worked just like you said. Thanks for your help!
Does anyone know how to create a scatter pattern brush? Because I need to learn how to make a confetti brush 🙃🙃
💙 may God bless your heart
Why the icons are so big in laptop? I just can see the 30% of the canvas. Someone can help me?
You can change it in the preference. Go to the interface section, and change the size to smaller.

please you can direct me to an explanation link in french language, all my greetings and my thanks.
a tutorial like that of your inkscape .. thank you
Hmmmmmmm...............interesting !
why i have lags in this version :/
The crucial part on how to create a custom brush started at the end of this video and it didn't work for me :(
I watched a vid at a different channel with WAAAAAY less likes than this and it worked beautifully.
How do you remember all this?? Hihihi
Is it possible to import other users' brushes, or export my own brushes for that matter? I'm going to take an educated guess and say no 😅😅
Cant save??
