Nice one. The helicopter pilots in Vietnam were mustard. Any chance you can get hold of Robert Mason, author of Chickenhawk? You could talk to him about landing in the middle of a line of helicopters and being the only one to take off when the troops had departed. Or leaving a hill with an overloaded aircraft by heading out through the bamboo as the locals closed in. I have a recently retired UH-60 commander friend and he says it's still the best book he knows on helicopter warfare. If anyone can suggest a better book I will be delighted to buy and read it.
Fantastic story. I had a chance in 2017 to talk to an F-105 pilot named Norman Powell at a museum and he had some fantastic stories of flying the Thud and serving in Vietnam.
Not sure how to contact him but if you get the chance to talk to him he’d be a great interview for your channel.
What an incredible story! When he talked about the young gunner giving him a thumbs up.... can you imagine!!!! As real as it gets..

@@dks13827 no he mentioned his WSO earlier in the video
@@nevilleneville6518 You sure it was his WSO? Weasels commonly worked in hunter+killer teams of F-105G two seaters and F-105D single seaters. He mentioned jettisoning bombs so probably flying a single seater. The G model would have been carrying the AGM-45 or the AGM-78 anti radiation missiles since they had the equipment to guesstimate bearing and range.
