  • Today we go over the measures we've taken to secure our natural spring as a potable water source that produces over 3 million gallons of water a year. These efforts will be combined to establish a collection point then install an off grid solar pump to supply the property with water.

    Good information, better than many on here regarding doing this properly to keep the water safe. One thing I would point out, especially since you appear to have livestock is that with groundwater springs like this it is important to always put a fence around it at a healthy radius to keep any animals away (yours or anyone else's) from it and possibly damaging and most importantly fouling the spring. :D

    Is that 4 inch blk pipe as an overflow ?

  • @dannylittlejohn1136
    @dannylittlejohn1136 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Why does it need to be covered, gravelled etc. Back in the old days they just made a natural dam and put in a pipe. I don't know the issue with the open springs.

    • @HeartwayFarms
      @HeartwayFarms  Před 4 měsíci

      From our research... Covering the spring simply keeps the source less contaminated by restricting runoff from the surface and wildlife or livestock from urinating and defecating at the source. It's just an extra step to make the water supply cleaner so that when it reaches its destination it is as pure as possible.

    was blessed with a Natural Spring in my property and I would like to know what I could do to naturally increase the water the runs (all year long) in these spring. Is there any plants/trees or soil work that would in the long term increase the volume of water that I get from this spring? Thanks for the great video!

    • @HeartwayFarms
      @HeartwayFarms  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The only thing that comes to mind is making sure that you are channeling all the water into one collection run so that it is not dispersing too soon. As for the volume there is not much you can do to actually alter it by messing around with the source.

    • @HeartwayFarms
      @HeartwayFarms  Před rokem +1

      It came back great with the exception of coliform bacteria. Which after doing a lot of research is in many of our water sources in different forms. Many people around the world drink water that has some level of coliform in it.

    utterly mystifying how the spring pond turned into two pipes, oh, why two pipes, one a corragated drain? any chance you got some pics from internet showing elements you didn't photograph during build. any rate, you know how we got drinking water from a spring? Built a 3 sided dam, stuck a pipe in it, covered it with an old highway bill board sign, dug out silt and leaves etc once a year. If you want to clean it up, use sand filters etc in the house, chlorine treatment if contaminated, etc.. Here's the danger with burying a spring, they move, not much, but bit by bit as nature fills pores with silt in some areas, where it erodes it out in others making water flow easier there, where a massive flood super saturates the ground and it comes gushing out blowing out the spring. Then there is the weight of the over burden you add. Water is popping out there because the water pressure exceeds the weight of soil over it. Should something underground become silt bound, there may not be enough pressure to force water higher. Silt comes from two directions, over ground, and from under ground. Once it's covered, it's going to be HARD work or $$$$ to dig it out, and using heavy equipment, with related compaction, ripping out too much soil and silt, contaminants dripping from equipment, all bad news. I can't see how one can safely enclose a spring without carefully by hand removing all organics a good 10 feet beyond any area water comes out of in the spring flood. Then layering up with smooth drain pipe with holes interspersed with gravel 50 / 50 , another foot of gravel above the pipe making sure there's good drainage of all pipe into an accessible pit to pump out silt slurry. I might even think about a fairly open geotextile under the pipe that silt can easily move through with water but would retard movement of rock or stickier elements in soil like loam and clay.
