This guy was the best centerfielder I've ever seen. He should be in the Hall of Fame for his defense alone.
Him and Devon White from the Blue Jays are the two best I have ever seen.
So should Andru Jones!
We need to petition them to give him another ballot. They did him so dirty with not even giving him 2.5% on his first and only ballot. What did he do? Is he a secret nazi or some shit? I just donât get it. They just let Mauer in and he isnât as good as Edmonds was, defensively or offensively. Thereâs guys who made it in who were not as good as Edmonds.
He also had one of the best 5-year-runs offensively by any center fielder in baseball history.
From 2000 to 2004, he *averaged* 36 homers with a 1.003 OPS (157 OPS+) while winning 5 gold gloves.
His exclusion from the Hall is near Lou Whitaker levels of absurdness.
ANDRUW JONES
People may never realize how hard that #1 catch was. Greatest one I've ever seen
Thats better than Willie Mays. Best center fielder I've ever seen imo
Amazing!!! En français? Incroyable!!!
Amazing!!! En français? Incroyable!!!
I absolutely remember #1. The reason I watched this video.
May? They never will bro!!!
The number 1 catch was THE GREATEST CATCH Iâve ever seen!
Over the shoulder(s) full speed run, body extension in full dive all while he can no longer see the ball. Unreal instinct of where the ball and his glove would be to catch it. Itâs hands down the best catch Iâve ever seen. Willyâs was great, but this is on a whole other level.
The most amazing shot of it is the slow-motion at the end. He springs forward as if the ball were going down a drain with him stuck to it. How in the world he could track it and still have that perfect of timing is just nuts!
Itâs a spectacular catch. However Willie still takes it because his catch he didnât have to dive and he made a spectacular throw saving a run. And it was only 1 out and he had to prevent a run. If he dives, the runners advance and a runner scores.

An aspect of that #1 catch that I rarely see called out: the fact he doesnât even turn his head around. He got a last glance of the ball straight over his head, judges the trajectory, lays out and snags it. Itâs one thing to make a full extension catch like that when the ball is at an angle, but this was almost exactly straight over his head, meaning there was a moment that he didnât have visibility on the ball.
The best fielding center fielder ever.
There are many more great plays and catches Jim Edmonds made as an Angel. #1 I remember watching live on TV, best catch ever.
Same here
Favorite OF of all time coming from a Dodgers fan.
The last catch which was number one was absolutely incredible and is up there with the best catch ever no doubt
He's got some catches that aren't in this video too that are just as good imo
He is the Vince Carter of amazing catches
What a great comparison.
*HE DID IT AGAIN!*
We were so lucky in the 90s. Centerfielders like Edmonds, Griffey, and Andruw Jones.
Was a big Jesse Barfield fan. Yea I know right field, but still.
I loved watching Edmonds. Incredible catches
I saw that game when he caught his â. 2ndâ best catch. That catch should have been number one ever! Of anybodyâs catch!!!!
This dude was incredible in the outfield.
Jim E was a icon for me as a kid. His defensive style and boy was it a style! Made me take notice and ALOT of pride in defense. Can't teach smooth son ;)
Best center fielder ever in my opinion. I played the position. They left out alot of his plays and he can hit
Your not wrong at all. Maybe not overall (Griffey, Mays, Trout, etc.), but from a defensive standpoint, it'd be hard to find any player who made as many big-time plays as consistently as Edmonds did
He was great no doubt but obviously you never saw Willie May's play
@@mikerichardson4618 i hear u but notice i said in my opinion. I like them all tho
I lost all interest and/or respect for the HOF after they absorbed snubbed him.
@@i_have_ur_loot8582 I love the guy and I am a huge cards fan but he just doesn't have the stats. Kind of like Scott Rolen. Edmonds is just short of 2000 hits, 400 HR, he's 150th all time for total bases. He belongs in the Hall of Very Close. Also no MVPs, just 1 silver slugger.
For everyone saying that's the best catch they've ever seen, I was actually in the scene! I was at the game and the bastard had two gems that day against my Royals. The whole stadium stood and applauded, only after a pause to digest what they saw. Big fan of Jim, even though he played for the Cards too.
Best defensive center fielder I have ever seen.
I was at the game for the number 5 catch ⊠he is incredible
His top three catches are the best ever for anyone else, while his #1 is arguably the best defensive play by a centerfielder ever.
That catch at number one is mind boggling. If you didn't see him making all these kinds of catches you would think it was just pure luck because they seem almost impossible.
He's the reason I played centerfield. I couldn't hit a curve to save my life, but I could play center better than the rest. I was always wanting to mimick Jimmy Ballgame.
Those last two, either one could be deemed the greatest catch ever!
#1 defies all laws of gravity and physics. Simply unbelievable.
We may have witnessed the greatest defending outfielder ever. The only reason I say may, is who knows what is yet to come in the future.
Uses two hands! #1 was the greatest catch I have seen. Honorable mention to Sam Fuld diving on the warning track for a catch.
Cardinals have been lucky enough to have two of the games best CFâs. Ankiel and Edmunds
I think you forgot about Willie McGee!!
And Curt Flood, one of the best.
I'll take Ray Lankford over Ankiel.
Willie Mcgee. Curt Flood. And Terry Moore and Ray Lankford
Him and junior were amazing. Edmonds was the no flyzone.
Prettiest catches and swing ive ever seen
What a player!!
What a ball player, my nino used to take me to angel games when I was a kid I remember all of edmonds plays
A small sample of his escapades. GOAT at CF.
#1 Was Willie May's signature catch, but with a full extension dive. That's the best catch/web gem of ALL TIMEđ
Except willy would not have to dive .Cause he's fast enough to reach the ball.
Nope, this catch is way more impressive.
my favorite was #2, AWESOME!
Could loop this thing. Crazy, man!
Edmonds is sick
Never saw any outfielder make so many spectacular catches, so often that they became routine. HOF stuff for sure.
Sickness
Miss watching this guy play ball , travesty that he was taken off the HOF ballot so quickly
One of the best athletes of his generation. From pitcher to outfielder and don't forget he could swing the bat
He never pitched, at least professionally, as far as I know. I think you're thinking of Rick Ankiel.
Catch #1, of course, was the best ever in MLB history...period.
This coming from a Dodger fan
It always amazes me how the centerfielder is almost always the fastest player on the team yet in jim Edmonds case he had the speed of the average first baseman and yet he was still able to track down any ball hit into the outfield
Playing centerfield has a lot to do about good timing and instinct. Many speedsters have come and gone in the MLB because they didn't have those traits mentioned.
@@sirsaint88 I know I was just pointing out that he had the speed of an average first baseman when probably 85% center fielders are all speed players
He didn't get an incredible jump, and certainly didn't have great speed. But the way he could turn his back to the ball and just run flat-out until the last second, it was almost like he could HEAR it coming.
pretty impressive highlight real.
Number 1 is still the one against the Astros in the NLCS. That was a game 7 with two runners on, and Astros had a one-run-lead already with Clemens pitching
#1 is the greatest catch of all time. Blows Willie Mays way. Sorry Say Hey.
Wow.....
If I could be a MLB player, I would want to be like Jim Edmonds, a complete ball player, who won games with his bat and his glove.
Great list, and in a very good order. The last two are both easily in the top 10 of all time, in my humble opinion. Lofton and Griffey Jr may have a few each. One of the best I ever saw was by a Baltimore Oriole center fielder named Larry Harlow. Probably wonât be able to find that one.
Everyone puts #1 as his best ever but I personally put #2 as his best ever. At least when I played, over the shoulder, back to the ball the whole time was a lot easier than scaling a wall for me. He had to do both in that one.
In his time his list of peers defensively in the outfield was a very very short list.
Kenny Lofton and Andruw jones were better defenders.
Willie Mays pales off in comparison to this display of greatness, just wow.
To be fair there's a whole lot of May's exploits which can only be remembered by by word of mouth
My dad said âWillie Mays best outfielder everâ for me itâs Jim Edmonds
8 gold gloves, babie! As a lifetime Angels fan, chalk this one up to one of our many bone-headed moves letting him go.
Andruw Jones was really great and was my favorite. But Edmonds was a beast too
He probably wasnât the greatest to ever play center. There were guys that were faster, or had a better arm. Nobody played center harder than Jimmy though. He was my favorite to watch as a kid.
The cardinals fleeced the angels on the deal for Edmonds.
Hmmmm......On the surface, but we got Adam Kennedy and Kent Bottenfield and got to the W.S. with them. We might have with Jim but we'll never know. Jim got his in St. Louis and I'm glad he got one somewhere.
@@kendallevans4079 bottenfield was a one year wonder. I think the halos wouldâve won the World Series without those 2.
The hardest one in my opinion was the one at 1:58
Can't teach that. Gotta be instinctual
Hall of Fame
You know the number 2 catch was good because that was the opposing team's announcers LOL
He was absolute greatness. And Brian McCrae.
He was the best defensive centerfielder I've personally ever seen. And even cooler (for me)...I got to play against him in little league! You could tell he was special even then!
They're missing so many from this list
... Number 2 should've been number 1 ... The catch at number 2 had more variables ...
People never talk about steroid use and how it can help defensive play.
the only catch better than #1 was #2. He had to go straight back and then deal with the fence. Unbelievable
I agree
Beat center fielder of all time #15
How is he not in the Hall of Fame?
Brooks Robinson at third. Ozzie Smith at short. Jim Edmonds at center
Best at tracking balls in center field all time? SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME.
Jimmy ballgame
Only possible better is Gary Matthews Jr
The only player that ranks higher than Jim is The Kid.
La mayoria de sus errores fueron en jugadas faciles. La dificiles eran jugadas de rutina para el. Asi de bueno era Jim. đđđâŸ
And the hall of fame isnât going to consider him againâŠ..yeah that makes senseâŠ.smh
Willie who?
I think number 2 was harder than number 1
If Piazza and cheater Ortiz are in...Edmonds should be
Hall of fame voting is 80% offense 20% defense. A lot of good hitting, great defenders are robbed. Look at Keith Hernandez!!
if he doesnt play so shallow it would be routine catch
but, if he didnt play so shallow, there would be dink base hits in front of him.
you always want to play as shallow as you can without being burned behind you.
Adam Jones was great at this, too.
@@googoo-gjoob absolutely! He got way more outs playing shallow than outfielders who play "normal" depth. He's explained the advantages of playing shallow many times and it makes total sense. Most guys play so deep that they couldn't possibly have anything go over their head, but they let so many balls drop in front of them that shouldn't. Edmonds got all of those deep balls that everyone else did, plus he caught hundreds of shallow dinkers that all of those other guys never even had a shot at
Yes! It annoyed me that he got credit for making âdifficult catchesâ when really he was out of position and thatâs why they were so difficult
There's no doubt Jim Edmonds made some amazing catches. But I always questioned did Jim Edmonds have to make amazing catches because he had to make up for a lack of Blazing speed? In other words does a guy with better speed who plays center field make those catches look more routine? Just thinking out loud.
Whats even more impressive with that #1 is he literally catches it bare handed and scoops it into his glove hand.
