  • Reeds on the roofs; thatched roofs. Where does that reed grow? How do you put it on a house? How long does it last? I will take you back to Dwarsgracht and National Park De Wieden to show you.

What a lovely, picturesque area! It's interesting to see the similiarities and differences between this style and the Japanese style. My thatched roof is covered by a copper addition, which I believe was added about 30 years ago. I'm planning to vault some ceilings soon so that it can at least be appreciated from the inside -- and so that I can use the irori (firepit)! Thanks for sharing the detail here, it was informative :)

This vid did not answer the Question for me of how Thatched roofs work. What stops the water from getting through?

Nothing but the layer of thatch/reeds is keeping out the water.
      No extra treatment.
All natural and proven perfect for centuries 👍.

This is so beautiful, the land and the water! I can't imagine living someplace where there are literally streams next to and in front of your house! How deep are the 'canals' of water in front of the houses in that first bit of the video?
I was actually looking to draw some houses, and I came across some houses that were sod and some thatched. I was wondering how that actually works, and this is the first video I stumbled on. So glad that I did! Not only did I learn about these, but got to see some beautiful landscapes. What country and location is this? German? Dutch?

It is in the Netherlands. And waters are maybe 2m deep at the most because pleasure boats sail through. Otherwise it would have been less deep. Thanks for your message, glad you enjoyed it :-) .

How do you keep intrusive mold away?

Hi Suzanne, I don’t know that particularly. Only the fact that it is a thick layer of thatch. And that in the early days the roofs were never treated and worked for ages. If you have personal interest, maybe contact one of the companies thatching roofs?

@@saskiadegroot9230 thank you. No worries. I live in the desert. I was just curious. Trying to wrap my head around why it doesn’t leak or get moldy. 🤔
