- TIMING INDEX / SECTIONS BELOW - Here's the new Filter 8 from Joranalogue. It's a VCA based filter topology similar to but not exactly an OTA design. It features a unique resonance circuit and (according to Joranalogue) is "the cutting edge in analogue VCF design". Now I can't talk specifics about the circuit but feature wise it certainly packs in a massive punch. 8 filter outputs including 1, 2, 3 and 4 pole low pass filters, a 1 pole high pass, unique band boost and notch, phase shifted output and 4 pole band pass. There's gain compensation to even out each output under self oscillation, we can freeze and hold the core of the module to effectively silence and halt the output or freeze (like a sample/track and hold) when it's producing it's own CV signals. The outputs turn to 8 phase shifted sine waves that tracks great as a multi phase oscillator or LFO and patching feedback means we can create a range of saw like waves with various exp. lin. and log. curves. We can drive the filter with the second input, or again with feedback, exponential and linear FM means we can get gorgeous rich formant throaty vocal tones under audio rate modulation or musical harmonious FM tones when using it as an oscillator. 22:48 Filter Pings. Using the ping input to excite the filter core. Create melodic lines, deep bass, percussion and linear FM tones.
25:42 8 phase oscillator. Using the oscillating filter as a sine oscillator. Glassy and harmonious FM tones under modulation.
27:20 Patching feedback over the oscillating sine to create new wave shapes. You can make a near perfect saw wave as well as other exponential and logarithmic ramp shapes as well as some odd comb like shapes.
28:19 8 phase voltage controlled LFO. Using multiple phases to create cascading modulation across a wider patch. As above with audio we look at feedback to make new LFO shapes too.
30:22 Slew limiting. As the filter works at sub audio rates we can use it slew a signal. Here we add glide by slewing a pitch sequence. We also add resonance for a way to inject wobble and vibrato into the pattern.
32:39 FM oscillator tones - a little musical break. We look at gated the hold on and off while this operates as an oscillator. This creates little clicky rhythms and breaks in the sequences we're using.
33:52 Resonating envelopes - using envelopes to excite the near oscillating core of the filter to create wobbles within the envelopes shape. We can also superimpose audio rate tones or LFOs into the envelopes too.

If you can do all of this with a filter I have no reason not to get into eurorack. It's a music nerd's dream come true. The possibilities for sound design reach as far as your curiosity, creativity and willingness to learn will allow.
Correction: All of the above, as only limited by the depth of your wallet &/or bank account lol
Seriously though, I've been wanting to buy 10's of modules for 2+ years. But ever time I have a few hundred bucks to spend, I can buy am entire Synth, or one module. Putting money completely aside, EuroRack is a every sound designer's and musical artist's dream.
@@humanbeing_ Bit the bullet and started putting together a system, got 5 (6 when UPS comes through this week) modules and love it. It's slow and needlessly expensive to get into (Give or take $1500 CAD and I'm only getting a filter now, still no VCA, just a passive LPF) but I regret nothing, I'm having a lot of fun.

You can do more in softwear like vital... Buuuuut eurorack makes it real easy to get working ideas.
It’s expensive and impractical compared to buying a good synth. My eurorack was around 8k and it’s not even close to where I want it.
I recently bought a Filter 8 after seeing this demo. Watching it again to try and wrap my head around all the features and it’s just making me want to buy another one. Well done sir :)

Brilliant presentation, and not biased. Just got this module and can't believe how good it is. As a normal filter is stunning, and as everything else is unbelievable. So much weight and detail into the subsonic VCO range, it really deserves a good subwoofer to appreciate.

Outrageous amount of functionality! I'm trying to wrap my head around the 8 LFO mode possibilities when compared to the XAOC Batumi.
Yeah so 4 extra in between phases than the Batumi. Of course the Batumi is clockable, syncable, multiple modes, CV over each LFO etc.

I've seen several videos on this (what looks like a very interesting polyvalent module).
I'm curious to know, what happens if you put (as an example) a sequencer in the V/Oct and at the same time put a signal (could be from another sequence even) into one of the Ins? Does it still take the signal, making it a sort of filter, come oscillator, whilst mixing the two or three signals?

hey at 28:19 in the "8 phase voltage controlled LFO" section, what are the LFO's modulating? because it sounds great.
This company always blows my mind with such quality and clever ideas on each new module they make! If i remember correctly You did a very nice video of the erica synths black vc eg and its expander that can send cv’s on each stage of the enveloppe, that should be awesome to sequence and animate this filter in a unsual way. Thanks for your interest! My main US dealer is Perfect Circuit Audio; they sold out of their first few units very quickly. There will be some more coming their way next week. These are the very last units of the initial production batch, so the next restock will take a few months I'm afraid!

Question: I'm looking for a new filter and this speaks to me, but then the QPAS appeared and it seems to be Mr. Sex. Would I be wrong to opt for the Filter 8 instead of the QPAS? They are obviously different beasts, but as someone who has had both racked up, could you give me a little guidance?
Without knowing what you're trying to achieve I can't really comment. If you need stereo then the QPAS. Tonally they're very different.

How do you get that waves from the LFO in the section: 8 PHASE VOLTAGE CONTROLLED LFO. Using the same paraments like you do in the video, I just get very low frecuencies, almost unaudible. I don't get it. Thanks! And awesome explanation!
Hello, the low frequencies from Filter 8 won't be audible, they are used to modulate other things when they are so low in frequency. You can see in that section the low pitched sine waves the outputs have on the oscilloscope (Mordax DATA). These LFOs are then control the level of VCAs to make other sounds (external to the module) fade in and out.

Probably the most interesting filter module i've seen. It deserves a far better looking panel. Do any others come close to it in terms of modulation features? I've been advised never to stack inputs - what's your take on it?
Nothing really touches this for features, patch led functions and modulations. Never seen a hold input on a filter for example. I don't think the panel is bad but it's all personal of course. Stacking inputs? Do you mean mixing multiple inputs of a stackable cable?
@@DivKidSeems like a 'complex' filter. Yes that's what I mean. Jared from Future Retro said it was fine to use stackable cables to multiply an output but never an input
yeah that's right, splitting outputs to multiple sources is the purpose. They're not made for mixing as the signal will flow back to the outputs and connecting outputs to outputs is the one main rule of the whole thing.
I'm sure I've seen you and other people doing it in youtube videos though which was why I asked. Maybe i'm mistaken or are there exceptions?
I've never done it in a video. But one thing to bare in mind when using a stackable cable is that you can split the signal from either end of the cable. So you don't have to stack them at the point of the output. You can take the output to the input of the next thing in the signal path and then split the signal off there. Which is potentially confusing but nice to do.
Sub-sonic filtering isn't the same thing as a slew rate limiting. Slew rate limiters give a fixed rate of change for any change in level - in other words the bigger the change the longer it takes to get there.
A filter like this will take the same amount of time to get there regardless of size of the change.
If you filter a square wave it gets more and more rounded and sine-like. A slew limited square will get more triangle-like.

However there's a strong argue that in creative and musical use you could reach for a filter or a slew to add a glide or slide to a stepped change.
Technically it's different (and I like "technically" too) but musically both would achieve the goals of a user. Really got me thinking though and there's a few things I'd like to go try out. Thanks again.
@@DivKid Sorry, it turned into a bit of a rant. You're right to an extent, but slew rate glide and filter glide have a really different feel.
Filter glide will take the same amount of time regardless of the interval (so the bigger the interval the faster it 'travels'). Slew glide 'travels' at a fixed rate, so bigger intervals take proportionally longer.
So a 2 octave glide takes twice as long as a 1 octave glide with slew, but it would travel at twice the speed with filtering. Also with filtering it starts moving fast and slows down as it gets close to the target.
That's the main reason the portamento can feel really different between two monosynths.

I totally agree with you in terms of different feels. It's like using a slew limiter with curve/shaping. The linear and expo or log slides do feel different. Very much like a different guitar player choosing when and with what acceleration ramp (can't think of a good word for that) to slide between notes.
I also know the different feels of sliding at a fixed rate or them taking longer. I tried this with the ADDAC Slew Limiter unit a few years ago which offered time compensated slew as an option. Again, different feel.

@@DivKid Cheers! It's nice to be able to nerd out about these things. Yeah, it's nicely analogous to the way a guitarist might slide. I think the filter style is actually fairly close to the way most people probably execute a slide, because (well for me at least) they tend to start fast and then slow slightly as you get closer to the target note (so you can land accurately and at the right moment). Of course a better player can do whatever they want!
I got mega nerdy with sliding with a few students many years ago. They'd past there grade 8 (last academic instrument grade here in the UK) and were wanting things to focus on and slides became a thing. The shapes we drew out often resembled a function generator. Sometimes an expo rise and log fall so they slide sort of ramped around.
Not saying we spent weeks on this but just odd lessons with micro focus.
Definitely fun to nerd out on things.
So...can you open and close the filter with CV? i havent found a way yet.
The V/OCT, EFM, and LFM inputs all modulate the filter's cutoff.

On the V/oct (and I'm guessing EFM with the attenuverter maxed) I think you'd need a 10v peak-to-peak input to go from fully closed (≈20Hz) to fully open (≈20kHz).

Sweet design and incomparably versatile.. but it just sounds a bit boring imho.
Well, that's sort of the point: a clean filter with lots of modulation options, allowing you to dial in the character you want, rather than a 'one trick pony'. It's only as boring as you want it to sound! ;)
I think it definitely has a "sound" even if it's a cleaner one. But I find a lot of cleaner things find there way into mixes and patches just as much as the more colourful, saturated sort of tones some modules offer. For me the modular system is about having a balanced or wide ranging set of options.
