  • My fairly budget gravel bike build and how I was able to turn my entry-level gravel bike into a sub-10kg, 1x gravel setup using Shimano GRX 400 and a Wolftooth Goat Link. I also share several other setup choices ahead of the WildWales Gravel Event.

    I have the same 2.5 years now. Upgraded to grx800 1x11 and specialized pathfinder tires. Great on the road till mtb tracks when dry. Wolfthooth works perfect.I had it in the past on my mtb to make a 11-46 cassette works with 11sp derailler

    So I'm aware that this is a slightly more technical video if you're newer to cycling, but if there's anything that you'd like further explanation on (like what 1x is etc), then just comment below with your questions, and I'll do my best to get back to you with more info ✌🏼

    Great to hear that 1x10 is enough! Planning similar setup on my revolt 1 - it also has this fsa crank and tiagra front mech i don't think i need coming from fixed gear. 😬Also the mech is different color to the rest of the groupset which looks ugly

    Just looking to buy a similarly spec’ed Orbea Terra, and think my first upgrade will be wide range 1x10, exactly as you have created here.

    Hi there! Thank a lot for the video. Could you please tell me how your GRX 400 10 speed shifter work with 11 speed cassette?

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před 9 měsíci

      It’s a 10sp cassette 👍🏻

      Oh, I see. I thought 11 because attached link for 11 speed M5100 cassette.

    Can you please tell me what computer mount you’re using? I have the same computer and light but at the moment I’m using the two stock mounts, I’d love to simplify it into one.

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před rokem

      So the one I’m using is also a bodge job. I bought it from eBay with the GoPro adaptor but I had to file the top down a little to fit the wahoo!

    Can you tell us the exact gears you have on the back derailleur please ?
    If the jumps between the gears seem fine to you then it's an interesting point for further investigation

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před rokem

      It’s the Shimano CS-M4100 Deore 10-Speed 11-42, hope that helps?

  • @captainswashbuckle5143

    I'm looking to upgrade the chainset to a 1x on the same bike but using the 42t grx800 version instead. Would you still recommend using the 11-42t cassette or would the 11-46t be better? It will be used a lot for commuting as well

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před rokem

      I think the 11-42 is plenty really. When using the Goatlink, shifting isn't perfect, so I'm not sure I'd want to go any bigger. That being said, I'm using GRX400 and so I don't know what it's like with the presumably might better grx800 rear mech.

      @captainswashbuckle5143 Před rokem

      @@grantritchie Thanks for the advice :) one more question, do you know whether the RX810 chainring fit straight onto the cranks, or would it require the whole chainset? If I could just pop the RX810 chainring on to the RX600 cranks it would be less than half the price

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před rokem

      @@captainswashbuckle5143 Oohh interesting question, I’m not sure on that one! Might be worth googling or asking your local bike shop?!

  • @andyjmcg

    How are you finding the 1x these days? I’m about to convert my gravel from a 2x using a similar setup.

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yea it's great, I wouldn't go back to 2x on gravel.

    • @andyjmcg
      @andyjmcg Před 10 měsíci

      Hey Grant hitting some issues with the same conversion! Did you need to make any changes to the rear mech or the chain? (Jamming consistently)
      Local bike shop saying this isn’t working but I can’t work out why.

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před 10 měsíci

      @@andyjmcg have you used the goat link? I think I did need to lengthen the chain slightly, but I can't remeber 100%.

    • @andyjmcg
      @andyjmcg Před 10 měsíci

      Yeah using the goat link, local bike shop saying can't be done, hitting a bit of a wall! I'll suggest a change/lengthening of the chain. @@grantritchie

    • @grantritchie
      @grantritchie  Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@andyjmcg yea sounds like chain length, I do remember running into issues and that solved it.
