Mom basically had the right names. Stalactite holds tight to the ceiling and stalagmite builds up from the floor.
Yes, stalagmites, "might" reach to the top. And when the 2 structures meet, they form a column.
When I was little, they told us an easy way to remember which is which: stalacTITES are the ones on the ceiling - they're hanging upside down, so they have to hold on TIGHT. Like I said, we were little kids in grade school.
The stalagmites have mighty bases to support them!
We were taught StalaCtites and Ceiling both have a C in them
@@Fast_Eddy_MagicAbsolutely great way to remember the “differences”!!
Two British mums react. Congrats!
There's a lot more than what she went over.
We have Niagara falls the Grand canyon Burney falls in California the giant sequoias Alaska and so on.
Washington State here! - I so enjoy seeing you with your mum. I lost my Mom when I was 24. I raised my three small siblings after we lost her. I was just starting to enjoy becoming best friends with her. It's so nice seeing a mom and daughter enjoying time together. Please tell your mom she is most welcome to join the reactions you share with us even though she seems a tad shy, lol.
Your mother is 100% correct. Millie.. stalagtites and stalagmites in Carlsbad taverns. I went when I was younger. And the water is so pure and clear on one of the displays It looks about 6 inches deep, but it's actually 8 feet deep.
If you make it to Colorado don't forget to include Mesa Verde in your itinerary along with the Great Sand Dunes and the Rockies.
My son proposed to his wife at the Dry Tortugas, It really is a beautiful place and there's many different birds other than seagulls 🤣❤️... Congratulations Mom and Grandma!
There are so many places that are absolutely wonderful in America one would be hard pressed to see them all in a life time
A place that these videos usually omit is the gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway that starts in Cherokee, North Carolina and follows the mountain ridges going northeast through Virginia. The mountains are so beautiful when the scores of mountain wildflowers are blooming and in the autumn when the greenery changes to red, orange and yellow. Speed limit on the road is 35mph and there are numerous turn outs for viewing the scenery.
Love it💚
I live near the BRP and I guess I kind of take it for granted. I'm by the Pisgah Forest and not too far from Biltmore and Asheville. My brother comes in the fall (but before the colors change) and we go up and look at the beautiful vistas. We usually go to the Folk Art Center and browse for gifts, etc.
I've been to Glacier National Park, it has spectacular landscapes. It's huge so I only got a chance to see a sliver of it in the 8 days I was there.
Greetings from the Appalachian mountain region of the southern tier of New York State! The hills and trees are stunning in October. Hope baby B mom, grandmother and dad are doing ok.
I'm also from the triple cities area of the southern tier region, an absolute beautiful area of the state no matter what season! A day trip to Watkin's Glen is a must, especially in the fall! I have hiked up and down that glen many times over the years.
As someone who can't stand New Yorkers, I have to say that rural New York is one of the most underrated places in terms of natural beauty.
There's a natural warm spring stream that flows near my relatives house in Brandenburg Kentucky or near about. You can go and spend all day in that water and your skin feels amazing afterwards.
I went to Carlsbaf caverns as a kid. It was incredible. They also have a show at night where you can see the bats fly out.
I am from the USA and have been MANY places. Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana is easily my favorite place in America. If you do come, I would highly recommend you visit it as it isn't too far from Yellowstone. Just be sure you pick up your trash and any trash you see please!
Yeah, I've been to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Zion. It's not that those places aren't amazing, but Glacier National Park is my absolute favorite and the most stunning in my opinion.
Great obervation, yes that was a seagull I said that as soon as I saw it. Congratulations on baby beesley to mom and grandmom.
I've been to Carlsbad! The caverns are beautiful, and your mom is correct! The stalactites grow down from the ceiling and the stalagmites grow up from the ground caused by the moisture that drips and when it dries what's left behind is are the minerals that build up, What they don't mention are the bats that live there!🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
When they say something like the Sand Dune National Park takes up 30 square miles, I would expect to see some surprise. That is about 75% of the land mass of Jersey.
Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia is worth a visit. It is a National Wildlife Refuge and the headwaters of the Suwanee River. There are boat tours that run daily where you can see many types of birds, alligators, deer, black bears. It's not all water and there are some unique foot trails and a boardwalk that leads to an observation tower. I live about 50 miles from the swamp and never tire of visiting.
Pikes Peak in Colorado is amazing. The view from the top of the mountain is so beautiful and breath taking.
You're Mom is so sweet! Love seeing you both reacting together!
The Lost Sea in Tennessee is absolutely beautiful! You take a boat ride on the underground sea.
Hello to both of you !! 🤗
As an American, I would love to visit the U.K. It has a lot of history and beautiful landscapes. Every place has its own beauty, and I would love to see it all.
There are thousands of beautiful places in the United States not just the ones that are shown!
So true. The landscape is incredible. There is so much to see, even people who live here can't do it all.
, Not to knock Europe, et al, there's so much in the US to see!
Multnomah Falls is absolutely beautiful. It was my son's favorite place after the lighthouses around northern California and Oregon. He walked across that bridge and waved to us! There is a lovely restaurant to the right when you face the falls...Northern California and Oregon are both gorgeous! Beautiful coastline with lots of Redwoods, greenery, waterfalls just amazing ! If you get a chance to come back, consider that part of the US - it is beautiful.
In Carlsbad Caverns those mineral formations are stalagtites and stalagmites .An aid to remembering which is which is " the mites go up and the tights come down "
For Oregon, I'd go with Crater Lake over Multnomah Falls, though the latter is certainly easier to get to. You have to drive out through an area that looks like the surface of an alien planet to get to Crater Lake, and it's about 4 hours minimum from literally any other place. (slight exaggeration)
Exactly! The Falls are beautiful, but I'd say there's a lot in Oregon that would rank above them. And Horseshoe Bend is cool, but I'd say there are dozens or more areas around the country that would be more beautiful. It's an odd list.
Yeah I was surprised Crater Lake wasn’t in the video.
I guess I have seen Multnomah Falls too many times to be very impressed by it.
@@GilaMonster971 And if they want falls, then Silver Falls Park would be a better choice!
Yeah, and Silver Falls state park is pretty easy to get to, as it's only a few miles out of Salem, and therefore not far from I-5. Of course, it we're talking about places to see in Oregon, basically all of the Oregon Coast qualifies.
@@sabliath9148 yeah if the weather is nice at the coast it’s amazing. But if it’s foggy, and raining it really detracts from the scenery.
I try to go crabbing off the Newport piers about once a week. It’s only an hour from my house.
The Great Sand Dunes are like being on another planet. They’re super out of the way (4 hour drive from Denver), but the drive is so beautiful, it really doesn’t matter. The dunes are in the San Luis Valley, which is Colorado’s dark sky country. No light pollution = amazing stargazing. The dunes are just one of many spectacular places in Colorado and its surrounding states!
If you ever stop in Yellowstone, a great stop would be Cody Wyoming. It's one of the entrances into Yellowstone and has absolutely amazing museums. Old Town Cody is also worth taking a look at if you're into the wild west and outlaws.
You should check out old mans cave in Southern Ohio. It's similar to Watkins Glen.
Mesa Verde in Colorado is pretty amazing too.
USVI is better than Tortuga, especially St John. I lived in the rain forest on the island. It was amazing. You could go to BVI and then just take a 30 minute ferry ride to USVI. We would go over to BVI for the mushroom full moon party. lol
Cades Cove in near Townsend Tennessee is one of Americas most amazing places. A lot of the Smokey Mountains are just stunning.
How we were taught (in primary school) to remember: stalactites (with a "c") are attached to the _ceiling_ ... stalagtites (with a "g") are attached to the _ground._
Congratulations on the baby 🍼
Oregon here.
Haystack Rock at Canon beach is a must. Also, Astoria Oregon is the oldest settlement on the Westcoast of the United States. Silver falls is absolutely gorgeous in the fall. Hood river Oregon is a blast and cascade locks has the best little ice cream stand in all of the Westcoast! Oh and Washington state is freaking awesome as well!
Besides the National Parks there are State Parks in every state. Yellowstone Park is more than the geysers and the springs. It is a huge natural wonder of its own very much like Glacier Park. Congratulations again on a beautiful baby...hope you are getting enough rest.
I would love to see you react to Most AMAZINGLY Beautiful places in Europe. Congrats on the new addition to the family!
Coloradan here. The Dunes are one of my absolute favorite places to go. I recommend going in late spring, when Medano Creek shifts its way through the sand.
I've always like to remember them as "T" in stalactite looks like it's hanging down, while "M" in stalagmite looks like a couple pointing up.
One of the great things about the USA is that we not only have these massive National Parks but also National Refuge sites, National Historic sites and so forth; but we also have the State Parks and State sponsored sites of various kinds. Now as for what is the most beautiful or most amazing, that of course is a matter of opinion and I'm sure that if you asked 25 different Americans from all over the country, you would get 25 different lists of what the 10 most beautiful or most amazing sites would be in their opinion. The great thing is that there is no right or wrong with any of these list. America is just so vast that this is why so many Americans never visit out of country. You could spend an entire lifetime and never see all there is to see in this country. But it sure is fun trying!!!
Glacier National Park is basically our piece of the Alps. That area up there is just north enough to get that Alps look and not the dry arid look of spots further south. Well, i guess you could say that anything north of New Mexico and northeast of Utah is Alps-like. Basically Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.
Great video as usual! Also congratulations on the arrival of the baby
At 1 million acres, Glacier National Park is about 30 times larger than Jersey and about 1/5th the size of Wales. The state it is in (Montana) could comfortably hold the entire UK plus another England, yet only about 1.1 million people live there. The scenery is magnificent.
Watkins Glen is in New York State and not anywhere near New York City. It is located in what New Yorkers and most Americans call as "Upstate New York. It is located on the southern tip of Lake Seneca, one of NY's Finger Lakes. The only thing notable about Watkins Glen other than what was shown in the video is that Watkins Glen International racetrack, which hosts annual NASCAR Cup Series Championship races, and formerly hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix and various IndyCar races.
I worked at Carlsbad Caverns. They have two tours. One, you walk a trail downhill slightly as you go and you see the various formations. They used to use handsets that when you reached a certain point you put to your ear and it would describe what you see. It ends at the Big Room and you take the elevator back to the surface.
The second tour is just the big room, you take the elevator down, explore the big room and go back up.
My favorite was the Bat Cave. Everyday at sundown you gather outside the entrance and thousands of bats come flying out of the cave mouth, missing the crowd by inches, cm to you foreigners lol. It is scary the first time because it startles you, but it is fantastic to experience
LOVED the bat show... Don't forget that you'll sit there for an hour or more with bats JUST POURING OUT of that cave... Not only are they just a few inches away from time to time as they swirl around and up, but they just KEEP COMING in mass...
AND that slight downhill hike still requires good footwear. You'll be at it several hours... It's not rough ground particularly, but a solid hike, so GOOD shoes or you'll regret it for days after. ;o)
Stalactites come down from the ceiling. Stalagmites come up from the floor.
I live in Nashville TN and we get sea gulls here that swarm large parking lots, lol, we are hundreds of miles from the ocean
Can’t believe they left out Crater Lake, deepest lake in the US.
Or White Sands NM
On #9 Hawaii, I remember see a history channel show on formation of the islands. The one shown is one of the oldest if not the oldest in the chain. The ridges are so sharp and steep because the type of rock that formed is eroding quickly. I can’t remember if it was due to iron contact or something like that.
There is also Cape Cod National Park. That is the bent arm located on the coast of Massachusetts.
I got to visit these places due to being stationed in Arizona, and Nevada. So fortunate!
Lake Plitvice in Croatia is the place I want to visit the most. It looks like something out of a CGI epic film like Avatar.
I've been. Its beautiful. There used to be a video online of the wooden walkway in winter.
😮 It should be British mums react, congratulations on the baby.
Multnomah Falls is now a state park. You used to be able to cool off in the lower part of the falls until a large rock fell into it and they closed it to people getting into it. A few years ago, an idiot teenager during a dry summer set off a smoke bomb firework and burned the area through much of the park, fortunately sparing the lodge and other facilities, but the fire burned east up Interstate 84 for about 12 miles and because of the wind, even jumped clear across the Columbia River and set a large fire in Washington State. There are some other areas in the NW you might want to check out, Crater Lake in Oregon, The Olympic National Park in NW Washington, also nearby Hurricane Ridge and the rain forest on the west side, which I believe are all included. There are many other places I can think of and many I can't, but those I have been to.
I can see Glacier National Parks mountains from my living room deck!!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I LOVE my homestate! Proud to say, I'm from Montana!!! I can be your Montana tour guide
Idaho has beautiful scenery as well I think every state has it beautiful areas!
10:31 while filming the movie "What Dreams May Come" there in Glacier National Park, Robin Williams was quoted saying "if this isn't God's backyard he definitely lives nearby" 😊
This just scratches the surface of beautiful places in the U.S. I’ve been to the U.K. a few times on vacation. You have some beautiful places there too.
Yes. Stalactites hang down from the "ceiling" and stalagmites grow up from the floor.
It is the same as stalactites and stalagmites , they form when water leaks through the sandstone.
Congrats Cookie. Little America is finally here. Bring your mum for a visit🙏
Hi Millie and Millies mom! Another great video! I'm really enjoying Millies mom on these videos.
Stalactites are the cave formations that hang from the ceiling. They are formed by water sinking down from the surface and picking up minerals on the way. When it gets to the cave, the water drips down but leaves a trace amount of the minerals behind, and those build up over hundreds of years to form the spikes. Stalagmites are the other end of the process. As the drops of water that form stalactites hit the ground beneath, the minerals in them build up mounds. So unless they form over a lake or stream, there's always a stalagmite under every stalactite. They are usually sets.
This is why I have no desire at this time to visit the rest of the world. For my retirement , I plan on visiting and exploring all of the treasures and history found in my own country…and pay my respects to Mt. Rushmore, Teddy Roosevelt and Friends…(Teddy is one of the main reasons our national parks exist in the first place)❤
If y'all ever go to Colorado, y'all should rent a car and drive Independence Pass. You won't be disappointed.
Now, do one for the other half of the country.
That’s what I learned in school (I’m American) Stalagmites and stalactites (stalagmites form on the cavern floor and stalactites form on the ceiling)
Stalactites have a C, c for ceiling, Stalagmites have a G, g for ground. Helps to remember which is which.
I haven't been too high Mt dunes, NY canyon water. But I was raised in Oregon with many visits to Multnomah falls an Columbia River.
I’ve been to Yellowstone and saw the spring of colors. That’s what I call it. It’s really cool and very, very, very bright.
They missed Yosemite, the Sequoias and Grand Canyon...
Angel's Landing is one of the most difficult hikes in the country. The narrow pathways up the rocks that require you to hold onto chains just to keep you from falling to your death (no joke) are what makes it so difficult.
You guys should check out the video : Accents Experts give a tour of US accents, part 1. A really good video of how our country is different in certain regions.
Glacier National Park is right on the northern border of . There is also a Canadian side to the park.
Great reaction! Come visit us in Colorado, along with the sand dunes we have the most 14’ners ( mountains 14,000 ft 4267 meters) were share borders with New Mexico , Utah and Arizona, actually one spot where the 4 states meet you can touch the 4 states at once, bring baby beesley, congratulations on the addition to your family
Stalactites hang from the ceiling. Stalagmites grow from the bottom. Stalactites hold on (tite) to the roof. Thats how I remember.
Much love from Beaufort South Carolina!❤️
StalaCtites grow from the Ceiling, stalaGmites come up from the Ground. That’s how I was taught to remember it, many moons ago, lol!
Very good reaction video! I can attest to the fact that Carlsbad Caverns is a great destination. My parents took my sister and me there, when were young. I took my wife there after we were married, and later, we took our daughter there when she was little. The lighted trail is pretty much downhill all the way to the end, then has elevators to take you back up to the surface gift shop/cafeteria. ❤
Stalagtites hang tight to the ceiling while stalagmites stand tall and mighty on the ground.
Carlsbad Caverns is cool. You can eat lunch in the Big Room.
Yosemite National Park in California should have at the top of the list. Photos of Death Valley, in California, during the short period they bloom are gorgeous. It holds the record for the highest air temperature on Earth. It was 134° Fahrenheit in the 1930's. That is 56.9° C!
California has the most natural wonders and extremes than any state in my opinion.
Thanks for the videos!
The ocean views of Kauai are spectacular but the best way to visit here is to rent a car as we did when we vacationed there in 2008. Words can barely describe the natural beauty of this place.
If you go to Carlsbad Caverns make sure to walk down to the bottom from the natural entrance, don't take the elevator. Also stay until dusk when millions of bats leave the caverns in a continuous "wave" lasting quiet a long time.
El Mirage, Arizona
Multnomah falls is my favorite place and there are other falls in the area.
Wish the narrator would say the dangers of those Prismatic springs. A lot of ppl wont realize if you get in that water you will most likely die before you can get out bc it cooks you.
Hi guys I would love to see you guys watch the most beautiful places in the UK or Europe. There's beautiful places all over the world. 😊😍🌎🙏💜
Great video and reaction! I am from the East Coast of America but I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I've traveled all over America and in other countries. I think that the most beautiful places that I have visited are Yosemite National Park, Sedona (in Arizona), the Grand Canyon, Big Bend National Park (in Texas) and small spots like Muir Woods or Burney Falls in Northern California (the latter which is one of my favorite camping destinations).
While this video was nice, I think that I have enjoyed the views from atop Half Dome or at Glacier Point (both in Yosemite) than anything that I've seen on the Hawaiian Islands. There are places like Lassen Volcanic National Park that have fewer visitors but offer breathtaking views. Last month, I climbed to the top of Mt. Lassen (an active volcano with an elevation of 10,457 feet) and offered amazing views -- even of Mt. Shasta nearly 100 miles away.
Congrat on baby B's arrival❤
Carlsbad is very interesting. It takes a hour or two to walk down and see all the formations. That large chamber is fantastic. Then when your finished it can take the elevator backup. If you are in El Paso, Texas it's a nice day trip and the next day you can go to White Sands. There they have huge WHITE sand dunes. They are white because they are made of gypsum. Looks like snow.
I have been to both of them, and the White Sands Military Museum is also amazing.
Don't ignore upstate New York. It's wonderful. There's Watkin's Glen and the Finger Lakes region (including wine country), but also the Lake George area, mountains, and Lake Champlain, and gorgeous autumns. I dunno why all the New Yorkers go to Vermont to leaf peep-- just go up your own state! (I used to drive through upper NY to get to school in Vermont. The state roads are marvelous.)
I've lived in NM for 11 years but haven't been to Carlsbad Caverns yet.
If you want a way to remember Stalactites and stalagmites think of a Stalactite as holding on "Tight" as it is the one hanging from the ceiling.
Or: Stalagtites come from the TOP of the cave.
Congratulations
For generations, the first park, namely, Zion, has been pronounced ZYE-un. However, inexplicably, in recent years I've heard it mispronounced ZYE-ahn. It's pronounced the same as the mountain in Jerusalem, and that's what Utah's Mormon pioneers named it for back in the 1800s.
With 640 acres in a sq. mi., there are 167.7 sq, mi./270 sq. km. in CO's Great Sand Dunes N.P.
Years ago, my mom taught my brother and me how to keep stalactites and stalagmites straight. The former are tight to the ceiling, and the latter might reach the ceiling.
In the Grand Prismatic Spring section, the Haydn Expedition was mentioned as being there in 1871. The following year, Yellowstone was made the world's first national park. Apparently they were impressed.😊
Several years ago, while I was spending part of my vacation in FL, I took the ferry out to Dry Tortugas. What a beautiful place. By the way, in case you're curious, "dry" means there's no potable water there, and "tortugas" is Spanish for "tortoises".
Across the border in Canada from Glacier N.P. is their portion of the total reserved territory--Waterton Lakes N.P.
I grew up in Montana close to Glacier National Park. I've been to Yellowstone and unless I was taking kids age 9-12 I would choose Glacier 10 times out of 10.
Hi Mum.. from Connecticut USA.
I was just in Key West and the Dry Tortugas a couoke of months ago. Key West is great and lots of stuff to do and see. The Dry Tortugas park is nice but if you aren't diving or snorkeling, there isn't much to do. Plus, its a long boat ride out there. We did a lot of fishing on the way out there so it wasn't too bad. Take a boat trip around Key West even if you don't want to go all the way out to the Tortugas.
You should do monuments and nationals parks next. I married a Brit last year and had previously proposed to her in the top of the St Louis Arch at 630 feet. I think she said yes just to get down from that height.
This video just mentions a few of amazing beautiful places in America -- there are dozens more .
Multnomah Falls comes from Larch Mountain, not "Lark" Mountain as the narrator said.
Great Reaction 👍🙏
If you ever do make it to Yellowstone, please be sure and note all the signs and obey the rules. Wild animals like bison and bears are everywhere, and they are very dangerous no matter how docile they may look. I know that just sounds like common sense, but so many people become entranced by viewing them up close, they forget to be afraid. 🙂 People have been gored and tossed, with bison walking away with souvenir pants on their horns!!
