Simon is absolutely bang on with that assessment of Gareth , as a England supporter we was so so frustrated with his management when it mattered in those big games big decisions needed and you need the minerals to see it through. As Simon said you need to be a winner to carry that through until the end in big moments. Great to have Simon back telling it how it is . Hope Simon over his scare 🤞
southgate played it like josé would, only josé wouldn't have gotten unlucky with those penalty misses and his peacocking in front of the press gives the illusion that he has minerals when his football is cowardly. That said, Southgate's style has been improving with every tournament so fair play to him.
@@jftt42 yes agree with the jose comments and I guess like u say Southgate got better with games BUT the team he has to work with is in my opinion at this moment the best team in the world , we lost out to Italy then Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup . So unfortunately unless Southgate wins the euros which we should with our team I mean we have RICE AND BELLINGHAM alone that cost 230 million just two players so it shows how good our players are. Southgate just hasn’t got that final push I’m afraid .

Instead of hiding behind Simon even when he's away I wish some of the other presenters had the balls to ask Southgate critical questions and challenge him instead of the drool fest we were subjected to.

Completely agree with Simon Jordan on Southgate. 3 tournaments where we could have grabbed an opportunity and due to poor in game management we failed. Italy at Wembley scored after 2 minutes and just sat back. France didnt have Pogba, Kante and Benzama and we still didn't get over the line
Southgate hasn't got the winning mentality - he's got a "try not to lose" one.

I would love to know why the England National team would play it's best players, have some of the best facilities, best infrastructure, best coaching system... But then so keenly hire a man who miles and miles off being the best manager available.
You wouldn't find top companies hiring top employees in their fields, only to employ a CEO with little experience, knowledge, or anything else and then hope for the best.
I don't know how hiring Southgate was ever going to win England a trophy.

Southgate is definately not a winner. The FA should bite the bullet and sack him.
Simon makes the obvious point that Southgate hasn't won a major tournament as England manager but that goes for all managers since Alf Ramsey, including managers who he would have called winners before going into the job, like Fabio Capello.
Let's just remember that the manager who won the world cup wasn't even experienced, let alone being a proven winner showing that it's the players who win the World Cup, rather than some genius off the field, who makes inspirational substitutions to change games

I've so missed Simon's wise opinions, get well soon mate, on Southgate I'll never forget how furious I was the night we lost the Euros final to Italy, because Southgate's inept tactics lost us the trophy, the FA love him, he's a yes man and they'll never sack him.

I give Southgate a free pass on the first world cup as Eng were a mess, but the following tournaments I was very disappointed with some decisions and lack of attacking/creative approach to games given our talent going forward. Simon spot on yet again!

@@reevo129 Because he's the best man for the job considering nobody who people would class as 'winners' would take it. He's not out there playing so it's not all on him but before Southgate, you could have put Pep and Klopp in the dugout and they wouldn't have won a thing. At least now, thanks to the work Southgate has done, England have a chance.

Capello and Erikson were so-called "winners" got us to quarter finals in 02, 04 and 06 and only the second round in 2010. I went to those games and following England now is immeasurably better. Read Paul Hayward's book on England football and then understand that this period of time is one of the best ever. Don't bother commenting if you haven't read that book.

hell do the exact same thing next summer Maguire will be there, Henderson probably too Shaw, Philips etc and will wonder why they get done in the quarters again against one of the big boys. Theres players who just won the 21s some of them like Colwill should be starting. 3-4-3 will win you nothing especially with 2 holding midfielders in front of the back 3 just because Maguire cant defend 1 v 1 or play in a 2

Not starting Saka in the Euro final was scandelous. He looked at some dopey social media campaign to get Mount playing wide right rather than one of the players of the tournament, that when he finally came on turned the game but Garth left it far to late. Never will be good enough, this team is the true "golden generation" Southgate failing them!

He’s content with second, third, and fourth. I’m sure the FA aren’t even interested in winning trophies, they just want consistency and not to be losing to the likes of Iceland or getting knocked out in the group stages. That’s the issue with England, they have underperformed for decades, players and manager and so people are now content with going deep in tournaments but not winning as it’s seen as an improvement from previous performances but there’s no difference where you finish if you don’t win it.

Simon is so spot on, he is the voice of the people, but what is strange and worrying is he is the only one in the sports media who makes these points, it's bizarre as this is the reality, perhaps it's such a boys club others in the media don't want to face reality, crazy how the daily mail journos love southgate. Making or not making changes in a game is so difficult. Especially the example Simom makes about a game Southgate was winning but he didnt make changes. City were winning against Madrid and made changes and ended up losing the game. Now if Southgate had made changes and they lost. We would be saying he made the wrong changes.
They needed to make changes as the better team was not them. Changes needed to be made to improve.
