Sons of Speed racing explained, with footage from October Daytona Biketoberfest 2023 races. We race at the New Smyrna Speedway asphalt 1/2-mile, just a few minutes from Daytona International Speedway. The New Smyrna 1/2 mile is banked at 22-degrees, it’s about as close as we can get to how motorcycles were raced on banked wooden board tracks over a century ago.

I really like the flat track racing. The ice racing is pretty sick too!! Even though it's not American, Norton, Triumph, and even Royal Enfield came out with some of the sickest old school choppers!! I just enjoy a badass looking bike!! Hope you are doing well Billy!! Have a nice day!!

You don't know me, but guys like you and Indian Larry sparked something in a generation of young men 20 years ago to build, ride, and earn our stripes busting our knuckles in whatever shop would take us. Main attraction of Bike week and Biketoberfest are these races for me. Watching those badass Vintage bikes rip around the track at 90 plus mph with no brakes... Hell yeah!! Hopeful that the races can be held more often. Keep up the good work.
I live there and haven't yet I am always out of town during bike week. I am going to eventually. Hopefully meet Billy one day

I’m actually crazy to ride it, the other eight known to exist are in museums. It’s a blue chip collectible, six-figure motorcycle. But it’s a thrill to ride it & see it go.

We went to sons of speed Tennessee last summer. So cool to see these machines slinging around on a dirt track. Highly recommend checking it out. It was a casual fun day of racing and we got to walk around and see the bikes in the pit and talk to the racers. It was fun to meet Billy and watch EBay and the boys tear it up.

Billy, another class would be kickass. Something like a modern vintage. Rules would be something like.....
no manufacturer restrictions. limited to 1 or 2 cylinders.
No digital systems allowed, only analog. Maybe ignition could be electronic or up to something like a dyna s single fire.
Brakes could be front and rear drum or, single disc front or rear or, no brakes.
Frames could be limited to a specified wheel base.
Chain drive, carburetor only.
This would enable more people to get involved by opening up the feild to equipment that is much more available and obtainable at much lower cost. Id imagine power plants like yamaha xs650 would be popular honda 450 vertical twin engines.
All this would be in the spirit of the early american motorcycle racing that you currently have going on.

The 45’s are relatively affordable. You can get into one for around $12k, then build up horsepower from there. Thank you, our races are the fastest anywhere for vintage American iron- besides Bonneville & El Mirage- which have no spectator arena.
The flat's are cool & interesting for flat out speed. Better to watch from home. 🤔 SOS I'm sure You can't capture the atmosphere & excitement of seeing in person. However it's still great content, in person You just get to see loads more. I'm going to Your site & getting some ticket's for the next event & making the trip. I'll say Hey when I do for sure. I'm going to start looking for a Flathead too. The Board Track bikes are really cool & very pricy but a Flatty can get anyone in the door & there's nothing like pulling out onto a racetrack & taking that green flag. Best drug ever. 🤣👌
I just started gettin into it and is that it lol just took some herbal relief for my back the le Pera bare bones on my 97 badboy is not liking the state of our roads here in NZ might have to get a granpa seat for it. Or get a new one. 😁🇬🇸👍

Those bike looks awesome, already built one but juts for cruising around and the regular 26" bicycle are a little too small doesn't look right on the bike.

Hey B is there a novice class if someone wants to come race or is it just for celebrity riders ?
I got a Kawasaki throttle Bog it's legal with good rubber. Can't get a correct diagnosis and the other shops don't work on anything over ten years old. Iv replaced the fuel pump, injectors, sealed the tank, valve shims, and I got a fuel commander for it the front cylinder ain't firing as hot. Valves? Desperately need the transportation for the racetrack aka the gas station is the closest place. I need some help. Got more money to throw at it just got to get it fixed. I'm in Denton Texas.

Yes. You can buy general admission tickets at the door. If you want VIP infield tickets, best to buy in advance. Sometimes we have some available at the door- sometimes no. Hope to see you there
I was wondering why no clutch or brakes? Do you use a regular transmission on them or a single speed? Not a bike guy, just wondering.
speedway bikes in Europe normally run a single speed gearbox

No brakes because the bikes are going so fast on the very edge of control on the tires. Even a slight tapping of the brakes will wash out the rear tire. The 45’s have three-speed gearboxes, but we only race in top gear- no shifting. The board track racers are single speed, direct drive- the way they were raced a century ago
Single speed would be more efficient for our 45’s, but most of these machines are raced elsewhere- where they need to be able to shift

You are right.
It’s no secret that Harley-Davidson continues to make motorcycles with obsolete technology- technology that was already obsolete in the 1950’s. That’s what the American motorcycle consumer still wants to this day. Have you ever been to the Daytona 200 race? There’s nobody there except for people involved in the race and their circles of people. Hundreds of thousands of people visit Daytona while the race is being run, but none of them go to the track to witness it. I go, it’s amazing. I love motorcycle racing of all types. But Harley riders don’t care. And that’s my point. I’m not sure what yours is.
