    I went to a prelease over the weekend and had a great time. I'm actaully surprised to hear criticism of the art, specifically that it's not consistent. Maybe it's because I've been playing magic for years, but I like FFG used a variety of artists for the cards. Lack of consistency in art between different cards was never even something I thought of as a negative. But again, maybe it's because MTG has been doing that since the beginning, so I'm used to seeing different takes on the same characters.

    • @mastersetmadness
      @mastersetmadness  Před 4 měsíci +2

      About half of the time someone tells me they don't like Star Wars: Unlimited, and they are someone who likes tcg's in general, the art gets mentioned. The lack of consistency feels stronger for me here because its not the difference between regular and alternate arts, or from set to set. The characters just don't look like they are all coming from the same game to me. Even the vehicles vary in style quite a bit.
      Not that it is going to stop me from playing :) For what it is worth, I'm not a huge fan of other cards games when they vary their card art styles too much either. Magic's different showcase style per set makes me less excited about opening Magic.

    • @theatom82
      @theatom82 Před 4 měsíci

      @@mastersetmadness fair enough. I agree with you about MTG's showcase styles lately. Most of them are very busy, and are so different in style that they are distracting (to me). But, the character art itself still varies wildly even on the regular cards. I like that. Comparing basic card to basic card, I'm curious as to why people don't like the variety of art in SWU, but don't mind it in MTG. Wizards using dozens (if not hundreds) of different artists over the years for the main art for the cards. Some of them look very different. There really isn't a cohesive style within standard MTG cards either.
      But like you, the art isn't going to convince me or stop me to play this game. It was just so fun, and I'm excited to see so many people generally responding well to the gameplay experience. The community has been great as well, so far. I hope this is finally a long term hit for FFG. Odds are against that based on their track record, hopefully 3rd time is the charm!

    • @JKSSubstandard
      @JKSSubstandard Před 4 měsíci

      I think it's the art consistency. Put the two Han solos next to each other, they do t even feel like the same game. And the varying quality within the style they went for, look at "I am your father" and derpy chewy

    • @mastersetmadness
      @mastersetmadness  Před 4 měsíci

      @@theatom82 Honestly, I haven't paid too much attention to specific cards in the last 4-5 sets for Magic. Still, I'm not sure I've seen the same amount of variation within a single Magic set on the standard versions that I see in SWU.
      Here's to 3rd times a charm!

    • @theatom82
      @theatom82 Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@JKSSubstandard I think it probably just comes down to taste. In that particular example, I definitely prefer the art on Chewy. The art on "I am your father" is fine for a card game, but it's one of the more boring examples, in my opinion (that's key, because art is subjective). But I'm probably also a little biased in that example as I'm a long-time comic reader as well (well, recently lapsed), and Landini's art is what ultimately made me drop the Vader book he worked on. He's obviously talented, but aesthetically his art doesn't appeal to me. It has been a general trend in comics over the last 10-15 years where they've moved toward a more simplistic style of line art with depth added primarly in the coloring stage, with the final product siting just short of photo realism. Of course, the one character who probably is justfied looking stiff is Vader, but it was pretty consistently that way in the comics, regardless of character.
      But anyway, about SWU, I'm just probably in the minority. As much as I don't like Landini's art in comics, I don't mind it on the card, and the variation from card to card is refreshing to me. I never once felt like the cards don't belong in the same game because of that variance. But I can see how others might be put off by it. Thankfully, the game is good enough to keep us all engaged and having fun!
      Cheers!

    I normally play MtG and Flesh and Blood (and occasionally Yugioh on Master Duel). I heard about this game and saw there was a prerelease going on locally over the last weekend. Decided to check it out and had a blast!
    I actually do like the comic book style of the card art, and the game was pretty easy to translate for the most part from my previous tcg experience. Not sure how into it I’ll get, but I could definitely see myself building some casual decks for myself and my brother for some kitchen table play

    I've gotten into your videos recently and you have inspired me to begin collecting/playing FAB. I just bought a case of the uprising set because I think collecting the marvel dragons would be really cool. I opened up my fifth pack and saw that one of the cards had an orange diamond on it. I was slightly disapointed to see that it was not a marvel but to my suprise, I realized it was a fabled. I am thrilled beyond belief, I just hope I didn't use all of my luck on a single card that I didn't initially want. I don't intend to gloat or brag about this, I just thought it would be neat to share an experience of mine that I will look back on fondly as I grow older.

    I played the Star Wars CCG from the 90s and loved it. Always have fond memories of it. Was excited to see Star Wars Destiny. Immediately got my son into it. Went to Drafts and competitive play. We were super sad when it was cancelled. Looking at the draft aspect of Unlimited it appears they are learning from past mistakes. I am cautiously optimistic. I would love to see it become a long term game.

    Nice review! If i had a bunch of friends excited about it, I would give it a try. My other compalint (besides FFG's track record) is that there are no novel mechanic to this game. It just rehashes, admittidly good, mechanics from previous "better mtg" games. For me it doesn't scratch any itches that more popular games don't already.

    I will disagree on the art. I don’t mind the cartoonish aspect, as I don’t need to have grimdark super serious all the time, I want the art to at one glance be the character I expect it to be and i think we get that so far. What I don’t want is like what we have in Magic where now the art has become this generic mess that lacks all creativity so it “looks like it is from the same game” it makes artists have to make very boring pieces if you don’t let them spread their wings and have to meet very strict requirements. But that is just my opinion.

    • @mastersetmadness
      @mastersetmadness  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks for sharing! I 100% agree that we don't need grim, dark, super serious vibes all the time. It's one of the reasons I'm excited for Altered.
      Star Wars is a game about killing a lot of people though, so there has to be some darkness in it.
      I think there can be balance between those two ideas you mentioned. Creativity often comes out best when there are limits (which SWU clearly has many limits already built into their art direction). I don't see why "looks like it's from the same game" would have to automatically mean "generic."
      If anything, for me the more cartoonish art is, the more generic it feels. It's all subjective though.
      Magic's biggest problem is that there is just too much going on, that where generic things start to happen.

    I can totally understand the cards in person being better than online. It is better than I thought, but that is the difference between a 9 and a 10 , which is all around good looking in long or short distance. I think people will give it a chance if they knew it was Fantasy Flight (the makers of X-wing miniature game) that was making it. If it was Called Star Wars Fantasy Flight it would have been premium instead of "unlimited" which gives off a low tier recon feel. This is the 4th Star Wars TCG after all.
    Ideally they should have just made a TCG base off the ships, and planetside units on 2 modes. I would have bought that, cause i don't always have time to bring out the miniatures.

    Like look at WTR and ARC there are janky artworks there, I don't think that's something that should hold you off. I really like the initiative mechanic, it's just a very cool twist that adds a lot of character like Death's Door does in Sorcery.
    Will give this a shot at some point but I'm not rushing, it seems rather derivative again idk I want something fresh in my card games there are too many to just do the same stuff over and over again. FAB is still the freshest and tightest experience around and Altered is next it seems.
    Last year I was very excited for SWU as all the mediocre looking cards and the uninteresting IP seemed like they were made for the perfect play experience without any need of bling, and that probably checks out since FFG make great games but my motivation has taken a hard hit after finding another great game that does exceptionally well what I hoped I'd find in this one.

    First! It's Star Wars.. it's done to death, and it's hard to see beyond the gigantic expanded area in which it has been spread thin.
    Second! While I like the design of the systems and gameplay, they offer little to help with the "first" point. This is NOT Decipher's Lord of the Rings TCG game, I'll tell you that much! It's also like a modern excerpt of what the Star Wars CCG (Decipher) was back in the day.. and doesn't even come close to being as cool or mind-expanding.
    But more importantly! These kind of games don't make it into my country, and it they did.. there are virtually NO LGSs around here. If there are, they run Magic, PKMN and (possibly) YUGIOH.
    Me and a friend each buying a deck to "try" is a waste of time and money (cannot expand the experience nor the card-pool). Unless there's a reason to invest.. and invest yourself in it, MANY already existing games we own will accomplish as much, if not more.

    I've been extremely disappointed with this game. It doesn't feel like a game of strategy. It feels like a race to see who can get the biggest things out on the field and once that happens the game is over. The Star Wars license doesn't seem to have anything to do with the game, either, it's just pictures on cardboard, and while some of the art is good, some is shockingly bad. It's just not a pretty game to look at, much less collect, and I haven't found it fun to play. I tried a wide variety of decks and deck building and it always came out the same way: a race to board value and never mind any strategy you had in mind because there's no room for it in the frantic pace of the game.

    • @mastersetmadness
      @mastersetmadness  Před 4 měsíci +1

      For you, does it feel less strategic than Magic? Most of the TCG's I've played are some variation on a race to get the biggest things out or to stop your opponent from being able to play those powerful cards. The strategy is in how to be faster, or more powerful than your opponent. I'll have to play more to see if I agree with your take.
      The games do play quickly though.
      My favorite TCG for collecting is Flesh and Blood, the art is stunning.

      @@user-by1dq3dz6g Agreed, prereleases are straight up races usually. I guess I'm a bit stuck on the idea though of a game being a race meaning it is not strategic. I don't see how the element of racing being involved means there is no or little strategy.

    And I couldnt care less. Im sorry, but to me SW is just a bad fairy tale set in space. But I understand, other people got socialized with it so it will always have its fans.

      Nerds get your light sabers out and pop this guy with a attack + 3 with light saber. You sit this is not a fairy tale, that's for you Disney guy, this is a epic battle between good and bad. I cast you into the pit of disparity.

      The story telling for the sequel trilogy was god awful. Those movies damage the overall brand.
