    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 Před 5 lety

      Joseph Smith Search Ebay for MS-20 Kit. They are relatively cheap even if they are 1300$. When they were new they were that much. And that is why they made the mini version because it’s affortable with the same quality sound. The Korg’s Arp Odyssey has the same deal, so you can get a full size Arp Odyssey and they are about 1500$ and they still sell them in the stores and the mini Arp Odyssey is around 660$. Again the big one’s are really cool but is it worth 2x the price? If i had the original ones in the 70’s, 80’s i would propably go for the original size models but i’m more than perfectly happy with the mini. Just bought the MS-20 Mini last week.

      Very much disagree..have yet to hear a modern synth replica that is identical to the vintage thing it's based on. I have a pseudo ARP 2600 with vintage AJH Synth oscillators and a replica 2600 filter that's as close as you can get..and it still does not sound quite like my friend's who has the real thing.

Sure materials are different but, korg did damn good job with this mini. Yes I get a little up my own arse and I'm very proud of my MS20 but, I'd never advise anyone to buy one if it's the functionality and sound they're after because the mini is perfect for nearly a one third of the price...

    I love it but could never justify spending money on something monophonic

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 Před 5 lety +1

      ACS ONE The MS-20mini has a really full sound and there’s so many modulation possibilities that you can make sounds that sound like you have 4 oscillators, so it’s definately not a deal breaker. How many Moogs are polyphonic? Just one of their current line up and there’s a million hits made with monophonic synths. You propably don’t own an analog synth because if you did you would know there is not one synth that does it all. All part of a bigger picture.

    • @acsone3546
      @acsone3546 Před 5 lety +1

      tompparaideri I do own analog synths but as someone who can’t play a keyboard being able to play chords is important to me and I could not justify spending money on hardware that I could really only viably use to create soundscapes; I’m looking into the korg minilogue

    • @epicon6
      @epicon6 Před 5 lety

      ACS ONE Ok. I owned a Minilogue and will get the Minilogue XD this summer. The minilogue also works great as a monosynth because you can stack all voices and detune them. I really recommend the XD because it has a much better filter that doesn’t make the low end dissapear when there’s resonance added. And they fixed a clicking sound that was present at the beginning of some sounds. And the XD has the awesome sequencer from the Monologue.

  • @eternalvoid2678
    @eternalvoid2678 Před 6 lety +7

    Honestly, as an overview it's fine, but calling this an "In Depth Review" is really stretching it. All I see you do is show of the basic sounds, barely patching in more than two cables at a time. You didn't even deal with the external signal processor properly, how it interacts with other modular gear, or how it can make really nice percussive sounds.
    You skipped over some of it's major flaws too, like how it's Hz/V instead of V/Oct, S-trig instead of V-trig, no separate frequency inputs for the oscillators, etc. . These things make it a pain to interface with other gear.
    I still love mine for what it does, but I really would only recommend it if you love the limited sound pallet, not as an introduction into semi-modular synths or a versatile synth to start out on.
    Next time just be honest and call it a demo or overview if you're not actually going to review a product.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange Před 6 lety +1

      Pieter Dirksen lol why are you so mad bud? It’s not a big deal honestly.
      Also the MS20 is quite versatile.

    • @eternalvoid2678
      @eternalvoid2678 Před 6 lety

      I'm not really mad. It just bothers me when a "review" doesn't actually review a product. I don't think it's a bad video, just a somewhat misleading title, that's all.
      This sort of feels like a webshop "reviewing" a practice guitar amp, like a line6 spider, and giving it a 10/10, saying it's perfect. (Ok, that's a bit exaggerated, but you get the point ;) ).

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange Před 6 lety +1

      Pieter Dirksen Eh I can see your point but I think they were trying to be in depth as well as inclusive to newcomers. Especially for a synth like the MS20 whose patch bay can be quite daunting. I’ve owned an MS20 for years and still found the video interesting and can see how it would be considered “in-depth” for a beginner or novice. I don’t think I’d compare the MS20 to something like a garbage amp though lol.

    • @eternalvoid2678
      @eternalvoid2678 Před 6 lety

      Fair point, when I just started out, the patch bay did seem intimidating. Still though, a review that's not critical is rather useless, at least as a review. I'm not comparing the ms-20 to a garbage amp, but rather the style of the video. As a 16 year old, I fell into such a trap, buying a garbage amp after reading lots of reviews stating it was perfect/made you sound exactly like a rockstar, etc. . Of course, the Ms-20 is a classic, and I don't regret buying it. It's just not as perfect as this video attempts to make it seem and that there are better options out there for beginners imo, unless you really, really love that filter, haha.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange Před 6 lety +1

      Pieter Dirksen I’ll agree to that. I had a Juno G and a Micron first (terrible for learning). Sold those and got a MicroBrute, then sold it for an MS20 which I did most of my learning on. I can understand why it would be daunting for a beginner but I would recommend it solely because you can learn by just playing the prefigured signal path with just the knobs and as you grow and learn you can start implementing the patch bay. It’s one of those synths that will really grow with you rather than you growing out of it, IMO. Like you said, thought, it really depends on the sound you’re after and rather one is interested in modular type stuff or not. Idk. I’m probably biased because I absolutely adore the MS20 haha.
