  • Fixing the wireless charging on Chevy/GMC part 1. This worked for me but doesn't always work in every vehicle. So if you are a McGyver kind of person.....this may be for you.

    OK adding an update to all the videos....New part arrived and I have installed it a few days back. I saw a post about GM saying voltages don't match or something like along those lines. That may be true but keep in mind they are nearly the same thing so the difference will be slight. Also the note about warranty is completely true, if you modify something on your truck that part will no longer have a warranty. So keep in mind if you modify the factory part that does not work and make it work, it will not be under warranty.The new box is almost all plastic and includes an LG logo, very encouraging. It has the same mounts and fits back like the old box. Both are powered by a 6 pin connector but they are slightly different. I was able to trim two plastic ribs off the original connector and the pin patterns are identical, six pins, three that have wires attached. So it inserted fine and I put the whole thing back together and it works. I notice it works a little different than the old unit. There is about a five second delay, then the phone starts charging and the charge symbol appears on the dash. You can take it on and off, it charges easily. Even if it slides a bit it seems to keep charging. The 2018 part number for GMC is 13521066, I paid 152 dollars for mine. So mine is in and it works. I would say if you can get a dealership to do it for you, go ahead. If you want to do it yourself, go ahead. If you are worried about a warranty on a part that doesn't work properly anyway, then plug in your iPhone and leave it alone. I suspect that GM will not issue any service updates or bulletins since it would cost them a pretty penny and they have already addressed it going forward.

    DUDE! Thank you so much for putting this on youtube! My iPhone XR wasn't charging on my '17 Silverado and I almost bought the part before I came across this video. It took me 10 minutes and my phone charges flawlessly now! So stoked. All I did was removed that little magnet in the center of the coil.

    I brought my 2016 Yukon to the Dealer here in Fort McMurray. They first told me my Galaxy S7 needed special charging case. I tried to explain to the me that it was built in and it worked fine when I got the truck first....they were not listening. Then they said I can drop it off for a day but they would need my phone for the day too.....I said no thanks. Thank you, you seem to know more anout these trucks than GM does.

    that little magnet is just there to extend the range of the charger so it goes through more material but in most new phones it will just stop the charging because its considered a foreign object it used to work with the older style of charging but because of the newer fast charging it doesnt work very good video showing people how to do this for free instead of destroying their console to fit an aftermarket charger in it :)

    Just did this on my 2017 Sierra and it worked like a charm with my iPhone 8 and a case. I only removed the tiny magnet to accomplish the charging. For tools you will need a trim remover (amazon has some cheap options) and 2 small torx screw drivers (I forget exactly what size). After watching the video a few times it took about 15 minutes to do the fix. In a 45 minute the phone charged from 52 - 75% sitting on the pad which is about standard for normal wireless charging.

    All the way to today. This made it possible to charge my Iphone 11 Pro Max(with no case on it) and i did have to cut the + off of the pad and flip it but in emergencies it will work. I can't wait to be drving down the road and suprise my wife with the sound of a ding. haha. Now we just need someone to 3d print a larger plastic mold and a larger rubber pad! 2021 Here we are!

      Update. My wife still hasn’t noticed a couple of times me placing my phone down and it charging. Haha. Wonder how long it will take her. It seems that I can only start the charge when our suburban is turned on it doesn’t work if placed after. But if placed on before the car starts it works. Although it’s not as convenient as I’d like it is a great thing to have during an emergency.

    Thanks Cheddarnut - very helpful video! I just did this in my 2017 Chevy Traverse Premier and it seems to work well so far. I do have to remove the IPhone 8 from the case for it to charge, but that isn't a big deal. The Traverse is actually a much easier project than the armrest-mounted chargers as the module is right under the rubber charging pad. No trim to remove or anything like that. The hardest part was finding the socket to fit the nuts holding down the module (5/16").

    @Baccigalu67 Před 5 lety +2

    I think that magnet is part of what detects whether there is a phone that can be wirelessly charged there or not. If removing it keeps the charger powered on all the time, that's a problem if you lay anything metal in that tray that is not your phone as it will heat up to several hundred degrees overtime. I may be wrong. An easy way to find out is to do just that; throw some keys or pliers or something metal on it and see if it heats up. If so, you may want to put that magnet pad back or wire in an inline switch. Or test it with a multimeter to see if it's powered up all the time with the magnet pad removed. Seems like it shouldn't work at all if it indeed the sensor, but who knows? Just be careful about it, is all.

    OK, update based on Boz Kurts comment ... I called and ordered a charging module for a 2018 2500HD Denali, the same model as my 2017. The dealer confirmed the modules are different part numbers, but they were not sure about any other details. The rubber pad and tray are the exact same part numbers on 2018 vs 2017 so that did not change. Once I get the module I will post the part numbers and another video about whether it works or not. The dealer did say that there was no service bulletin or plan that they had been given to retrofit anything. Most likely the feature isn't heavily used so people just don't care that much.

  • @JoeBreedlove
    @JoeBreedlove Před 6 lety +3

    Ok. I did this mod and it did work. However, it only works if I set the phone in the charger and turn on the truck. Charges perfectly until I lift my phone out of the charger. If I set it back in the charger...nothing. I have to turn off the truck and restart and then it will recognize the phone again and begin charging. I’m using an iPhone X. I will be ordering the 2018 charger.

    Not sure if this would help any one but I found this.. For certain model year 2015-2018 customers, GM Service Bulletin #18-NA-153 is available to upgrade your vehicle's wireless charger to have latest compatibility. GM's compatibility chart link:
    www.gmc.com/content/dam/gmc/na/us/english/index/gmc-life/all-stories/wireless-charging/02-pdfs/GM%20Wireless%20Charging%20Compatible%20Devices%20-%202019-08-30.pdf
    My wifes Galaxy S7 would never charge on her 15 Yukon Denali, was told it was defective and they would warranty it, until it came time to do it. Then the dealer said it was a compatibility issue and offered this service bulletin and quote to replace for an updated charging pad for $200.

    This did not work on my Chevy HC. Should it? Everything looked the same with your GMC and my High Country.

      Well, results have been about 90 percent worked and few that didn't. You can alternatively order the 2018 module and either swap it or have a dealership do it. Someone posted their dealer did it under warranty but most have said the dealer knew nothing.

    Sadly, this did not work with an iPhone XS on a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe. I blame Apple.

    I was told the same thing about iPhone 8 charging by my salesman. Took my 2017 Yukon Denali back to see what was going on and they found it wouldn't charge an Android phone either. They replaced my charging unit and was then told I couldn't charge an iPhone. I asked them about installing the charging unit from a 2019 Yukon that would work and all I got was a blank stare!
    After looking around on the internet I found a new charging unit with the necessary Qi technology at an online GM supplier for $99.40. It arrived today and it took me 16 minutes to swap the units. I modified the connector with a cordless Dremel with a stone attached.
    Now my iPhone 8 charges perfectly in my Yukon!

    🤔 iPhones suck? Oh wait a sec. It's because it's not an Apple product so it's not comparable with iJunk 😲💩🤣
