Wish you all a very happy Mahā Shivarātri🙏🏼
On this auspicious day, we are very happy to present a unique composition, composed by our Grandfather Suchindram Sri S P Sivasubramaniam for our grandmother Smt R Sornambal’s harikathā performance, about 60 years ago.
This song, composed for the Harikathā 'Kāraikkāl Ammaiyār Charitram', features a beautiful passage in the charaṇam that portrays the great saint Kāraikkāl Ammaiyār's prayer to Lord Shiva as she walks up Mount Kailasha on her hands, not wanting to soil the sacred ground with the touch of her feet. Each line of this passage begins with Swarāksharam, progressing in decreasing intervals from the middle-octave 'G' up to the higher octave 'P'.
We were very happy to work with brilliant musicians like R Sankaranarayanan, Dr S Karthick and B Sree Sundar Kumar.
We are grateful to Charsur Arts Foundation for graciously coming together in bringing out our grandfather's compositions.

Oh, what a Composer ur grandfather is!
Swaraksharam in 10 swarams... that only the greatest of the gr8 composers can do. It is very well explained by sornalatha in such a way that even a lay man understands the beauty of the song and the composer's greatness.

I am reminded of those happy days when I used to have darshan at Suchindram on way from Nagercoil, where I was staying, to Kanyakumari. You are truly blessed to have been born in such a musical family. It is God's gift. You have brought out the quintessence of Vachaspati, in your exquisite rendering of your venerable grandfather's divine Kriti. No words to thank you. Already you are on the top and I am sure you will touch greater heights in your musical journey

A wonderful composition, one of its kind presented on this auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri! Shri. S.P. SivaSubramaniam is a composer par excellence and a musicologist. When I say I really mean it! His compositions are not only meant to be sung or danced but also teaches you the theory behind Carnatic music. His spontaneity and the usage of words is something beyond imagination. I have observed from close quarters few of his kritis performed by Akkarai Sisters. Every composition is unique in its own way. It is rare to find a composer who is adept in handling lyrical beauty, intrinsic laya patterns and brilliance in raga aspects. His lyrics has that rhyming words or edhugai monai in tamil which adds that the surprise element and keep the rasigas intrigued! Just to mention few of his works that has amazed me. Swarakshrams in “Ananda Thandavam”, concept of Yati in the Kalyani raga kriti “Padum paniyae”, usage of different gatis and swarm sahithyam in the kamas kriti “Enna punniyam Seidhayo” , evergreen “ketta varam “in ghanaragamalika which shows his mastery and command in the language along with musical excellence. His ragamalikas always have the rare combinations of ragam being mixed together.
When we speak about the language and music being imparted in school as a curriculum, I would highly recommend that it is these compositions that would create a sense of understanding in students. His compositions has been composed on religious deities, Tamil language and grammar , patriotism and rich cultural values. It is a great way to salute and honour a composer of such great heights! It is high time that we bring to light such classical treasures to our future generation.
Normally a vrittam is not part of a main composition. But here in Ananda Thandavam, the vrittam is composed as a prelude to the main piece. The Jatis used here makes it also a dance number and also think if it is a thillana that is following! The main piece with its lyrical beauty brings the scene of Ammaiyar aikkium in front of us! It is no wonder that It was composed for Sornambal Amma’s harikatha! The swaraksharms as rightly explained in the intro make us understand the composer’s perspective. A masterpiece to be preserved, appreciated, celebrated and embraced for years to come.
What a brilliant rendition by the Akkarai sisters! They carry forward such a great legacy with so much of ease and brilliance! The visuals add vibrancy to their masterful singing and playing. Great percussion support from all the artists. Very well edited and recorded by the technical team. Kudos to Swamynathan Sir for creative his inputs 😀

Excellent presentation of grandfather's composition by grand daughters. It is too grand opening with a quick jathi . a feel to dance automatically arises in the body n soul. Though I hv listened to this song many times this presentation is a great visual retreat too. I recollect Subhalskshmi singing this song solo for my golu n me specially. One can visualise Saint Kāraikkāl Ammayār ascending Mount Kailāsh, marvelling at the cosmic dance of the Lord, while singing His glories! Thank you Akakrai Sisters!
