A Defense of Poetry by Shelley was written in response to an essay by his friend, Thomas Love Peacock called ‘The Four Ages of Poetry’.
In this video, we will first look at the summary of The Four Ages of Poetry published in 1820. Peacock suggests that poetry is of less use to modern man than it was in previous ages. According to Thomas Love Peacock, poetry passes through four distinct ages just like the four ages of man. Peacock said that as civilization progresses, poetry declines and becomes a waste of time for intelligent people who would rather study natural and social sciences.
Peacock’s essay caused ‘sacred rage’ in Shelley.
Shelley wrote the brilliant treatise ‘A Defense of Poetry’ in 1821. Now, we will look at the summary and detailed explanation of Shelley's 'A Defense of Poetry'.
Shelley defines poetry as ‘the expression of imagination’.
