    Free returns definitely breeds more returns. It encourages purchases from fence sitters, time wasters, compulsive buyers, those who fancy a free hire of an expensive item and those under the impression that it's Ebay who foot the bill for a return. That £5 item then becomes an £11 item if you've paid two lots of postage on it which is depressing. When I had free returns my INAD rate went up rather than down. It's a common misconception that INAD will go down as if that option is there then they can choose it regardless of free returns or not. I'd also say free returns make selling cheap items less desirable as potentially write offs must be made.

    Thank you Simon, another terrific video. A very pragmatic way to look at returns. "item not as described" , just a generic term used by ebay?. "seller pays return postage" is that something you chose to do yourself.

    Can I ask a question about the T-Shirt and the band-name? Not really related, but I have been wondering about this for a while!
    Banditø has a Scandinavian letter at the end, the Ø.
    I resell in Norway and found a BILLABONG shirt in extremely nice quality, nice logodetails on buttons and obviously an expensive item, but the logo says BILLABØNG… do brands change logo on certain items or is it a high quality faked one? In your opinion? You have been doing this for some time, so you might know!? Thanks 👍

    Another great video simon ❤ Can i ask, and im sorry if this is a stupid question....say you sold 20 items and it came to £300, £200 of which was actual profit.....but you then withdrew the £300 to your personal bank and withdrew it sll from the cashpoint. Then visited a load of charity shops and bought 40 more things with the £300 and went home and listed them all for sale.....am i right in assuming that even though you 'had' made the initial profit, and lots of those profits in their own right would end up being taxable if all banked, but you reinvested it all in more stock instead, then the stock isnt taxable? Its only taxable when it is sold and the money is kept as profit so to speak? I hope that makes sense. Thanks simon, keep up the good work 👏

    • @christinapither6963
      @christinapither6963 Před 5 měsíci +1

      I’m not trying to answer for Simon, but as I understand it, all your expenditure (including new stock, fees, postage etc) in a given period is deducted from your actual income in the same period, and you are only taxed on the amount left. So, if you spent more in stock in a tax year than you made in profit, you wouldn’t owe any tax for that period. You only pay tax on your overall profit.

    • @thegentlemanmarketeer
      @thegentlemanmarketeer  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment with a great question.
      Firstly I would 100% recommend speaking to a professional accountant who will advise on your legal standpoint.
      I do believe you only pay for you profit at the end of the year, if you have paid more for stock than you made in profit. You won’t pay any tax.
      Hope that helps and have a great day

      I have tried free postage in the past and I do believe it brings in more sales, however the margins are so tight in the clothing category I wanted to make sure I’m competitive with free returns.
      I don’t think it makes too much difference on the volume of sales hence I choose paid postage

    People are generally skinned nowadays. Unwanted Christmas gifts, or people just realise that they can't afford it, so they return it, to get the money back. Unfortunatelly, some of them will open false INAD to get free return. I always report them, and so far in 100% of cases ebay has sided me, refunded the cost of return postage, and defect removed.
    I sell cheap stuff, and generally people are not bothered to send it back, but lately they do it more often. I went up from 2.3% return ratio, to 3.5%. Like you've said, take the emotions out of it, and move on.
