    The empire was actually trending upwards in terms of stability until the war happened. And there was a percentage of the population in the successor countries that looked back on the old empire with nostalgia. If it had been given more time, it may have improved the treatment of it's different ethnicities across the territory, (especially if Franz Ferdinand had lived to become emperor). They already had considerably high standards of living compared to the rest of Europe. Even before the dissolution of the empire, the issues people had were more of sharing rights and privileges rather than the empire existing as a repressive entity. But who knows.

      I don't think it would. Such a state construction would require even more compromises and sovereign powers being given up than being part of the EU. We already see more and more complaints, most of them coming from countries that were formerly part of the empire about how bad it is when more power is being centralized at Bruxelles. This issue will appear in a supposedly reunited Austria-Hungary as well.

      But by record they are not called "von Habsburg" as royals but by their family name "Habsburg-Lothringen".

      At later on Emperor of Austria (or later Austria-Hungary) held the title king of Slavonia, king of Croatia and king of Dalmatia or as it was known "Trojednica" (loosely translates to "kingdom of three"), and since Dutchy of Croatia has most of it's original territory in present day and Ottoman era Bosnia, it is likely that the annexed Bosnia would become the 4th kingdom of Kingdom of Croatia. That is why certain members of Croatian intelligentsia tried to define Croatia as a multicultural state where Muslims, Croats and Serbs can live under the protection of the same Ban (regent of kingdom of Croatia) and Emperor. Unfortunately, when Austria fell apart after ww1 that idea of multicultural state turned into Yugoslavia which didn't really care to give everyone the same rights which then caused the chaos and hate spread by all sides that were the victim of each other that lasts to this day.

The Triune Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia (virtually Dalmatia as well) was part of the St.Stephan's crown. King and empearor Karl signed the transformation of the state into a three-part state on November 13 th 1918., and it was soon after accepted by Hungarians, but its realisation did not take effect because of the pro-Yugoslav forces in the Croatian parliament at the time. Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia was the core of the newly declared State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, on October 29th. 1918. Therefore, Croats as the only political nation within it had a central role. The state existed until it eventually merged with Kingdom of Serbia on December 1st. 1918. The who settlement had nothing to do with Bosnian Moslems. Having German and Hungarian as officially dominant language is exactly I wouldn't do on re-union of AT-HU. At this point, the EU policies are a well-done example, and I would apply them, perhaps adapted to the special situation as many of the languages were majority languages elsewhere.

    AH was the 7th economy by GDP in 1914. Like Russia, after a slow start it was rapidly growing and industrialising. The war it started wrecked all that. Trade as proportion of world GDP did not return to 1914 levels until 1973. WW1 led to WW2. Population levels in Eastern Europe and Russia also did not recover to 1939 levels until the early 70s. It is interesting to speculate what Europe would be like today if Vienna and the others had avoided war over the last century.

    India is another country with many languages spoken. The way they handle this is that many Indians speak English as a second language (most native English speakers would dispute that they actually speak English, but that's a different topic). A large number of people in the new AHE would also speak English, and it would probably become the language most used for business and commerce in the country. Two Austro-Hungarians would be more likely to have English as a language in common than German, Hungarian, Polish, Czech, or another language.
    The disastrous part is how this would immediately start WWIII as a result of that tiny territory in China. People's Republic of China would, undoubtedly, annex the AHE territory in Tianjin.
    Of the 13 (not counting China itself), 9 of the states that would lose territory to the AHE are members of NATO (Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia). Of those, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Montenegro, Slovakia and Slovenia are entirely within the AHE and cease to exist as independent states -- which means the AHE is considered all of their successor(s). A majority of the people and the land would be comprised of NATO territories, which means the answer is probably yes.
    This, then, means war. AHE would invoke Article V of NATO, having been the victim of an armed attack by the PRC when the PRC annexed imperial territory by marching soldiers into it. This drags the following nations into a war with PRC -- Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, FYROM, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, UK and USA. Two more nations -- Australia and New Zealand -- would also be dragged into the war as a result of their treaties with Canada, UK and USA. It's incredibly likely to see even more countries join in just because they want war with China -- Japan, ROK/South Korea, ROC/Taiwan, Philippines, and potentially also Malaysia and Vietnam.

    People from South Tyrol normally don't consider themselfe Italian and calling them that is like calling a Scottsman to be English.
    In fact a lot of people from Südtirol hate Italians, because after they were included into Italy they were forced to give up German, some of them got new family names, all the villages got Italian sounding names. When they had a resitance movement that wanted to rejoin Austria in the 1970 and 1980 a lot of those people were torchered and imprisoned by the Italian police.

    • @olvrhffmnn
      @olvrhffmnn Před 7 lety +6

      No, Austrians are not more German than other Germans. Genetically speaking, north-western Germans are closer to the original Germanic tribes, while north-eastern Germans have more slavic roots and southern Germans such as Swiss and Austrians have more celtic roots. That does not make any of them less German, though, because the German nation was formed in the middle ages and has integrated all of these roots. Austrians are however part of the High German (Hochdeutsch) dialect zone which was the basis for modern written German. So, in a way, northern Germans are learning southern (Austrian and Bavarian) German language at school now and have largely abandoned their original local languages (Plattdeutsch) as a result. Which only shows how much all of German-speaking Europe is connected and how much Austrians are just Germans by another name.

    The way you've described it; an absolute monarchy, would never survive in modern day Europe. But it would realistically become a federal republic, so wouldn't have an emperor, but a president. In fact the arch duke was addressing the idea of federalisation at the time of his assassination.
    Since most of those countries are members of the EU, it would probably join the EU, allowing full access to the single market, and having many European allies, as well as the benefit of European support regarding separatism. With the threat of vetoing any nation joining the EU such it secede, it might be able to hold the federation together.
    Interesting that you mentioned the capital, as it would realistically have to be neither the capital of Austria or Hungary. In a federation the capital has to be neutral ground, and can't be the capital of any of the states (it's technically not part of any state), and ideally on the boarder between two states.
    The unification would mean the country would be able to grow much faster than each individual country currently is, so it's GDP would increase, and within 20 years could possibly become the second largest economy in Europe, after Germany, and thus very influential within the EU. Unfortunately this growth, and the nationalism within each state would mean they'd likely want to leave both the federation and the EU, which would be economically devastating but would still probably happen, so no, it wouldn't last very long, as people are terrible at recognising what's best for them as instead they look for things that confirm their wishful thinking.

    German and Hungarian were only mandated in the two capitals. Everywhere else, local languages were legal for governmental activity. Austria-Hungary built schools taught in the local language in any locale where 50 students spoke that language. The reality is that a high percentage of the population was multi-lingual and inter-marriage between ethnic groups was high. My ancestors were German men who married Hungarian women and lived in Croatia and spoke German, Croatian and Hungarian.
