There was an iconic Picard speech in First Contact. "This far; no farther," and so on. What's interesting is that, this time, he's giving it to himself (by proxy, more or less. He's speaking to someone else). I'd argue that this is the best Picard speech, because he talks HIMSELF into doing the right thing.

    • @Ocarina654

Not just that, but the response to his righteous anger. "You broke your little ships. " She put him in his place and made him realize that, even though it was righteous anger, giving into it was just destructive. He had to temper himself to be ABLE to do the right thing. Great scene.
First Contact has some great bits in it. For a number of years I kinda hated on it for being the big dumb action Trek, and for it kinda re-writing Picard into this Trauma-riddled mess of a man, which is all still true. But I've soften on how much I dislike those bits, and I think I like the good bits more than I used to. It's the best of the TNG movies by a good leap, though it doesn't stand up to 2, 4, and 6.

I've always been a huge fantasy fan, and I don't care about sci-fi much, which makes me the odd one in my social circles. I've always found that kinda interesting. My parents are both huge sci-fi/fantasy nerds, so I've been exposed to plenty of both throughout my life, but apparently I only inherited the fantasy half of it. Sci-fi just never captured me the way that fantasy does. All of that said, I also enjoy listening to people talk about stuff the like, regardless of whether or not I'm into it myself.

    A couple of thoughts:
    - Funding 5 seasons up front does have obvious disadvantages (as discussed in the video) but it does also have advantages, provided you get a good show to start with, since it allows the creators to actually plan ahead rather than just winging it season to season. Of course, if the creators don't have a plan for all five years, and are just working season to season (or even episode to episode), the advantages go away and you're left hoping the downside doesn't bite you. At least on the creative side; on the financial side, getting actors locked into five year contracts probably saves money if the show does run that long.
    - When it comes to Babylon 5, I've had several people enjoy it when I've watched it at them, but it took into Season 2 for them to really get on board, which is a pretty big commitment to find out that you like it. You could possibly skip S1, but then you'd be missing context on a lot of things - there are a lot of things set up in Season 1 that only pay off much later, as well as establishing the status quo before things start going sideways.

Loved hearing you two talk Star Trek! I'm a bit sad that you didn't talk more about Lower Decks. Amazing series and one that finally capitalizes on the nostalgia of the TNG/DS9/Voyager period. With Prodigy, I'll say that I enjoy the overall story, but yes, almost every single character is obnoxious. My kids seem to like it and I want them to like it with the hope they might learn to love the other series. But I would argue that justifying away your reactions to Prodigy because it's designed for a younger audience isn't really fair to "middle grade" stories. I'd classify most Pixar movies as middle grade, but the characters and themes are very relatable to both kids in the target audience and beyond. Prodigy is actually giving the characters some interesting growth arcs, but it's almost as if the writers are choosing to make them unpalatable on purpose. Miguel in Coco was impulsive (Imma steal that guitar to win a tournament), but still likeable. Dal is also impulsive, but comes off as really obnoxious.

So sometimes I put on Brandon Sanderson when I want to fall asleep. Especially the long older videos signing lectures that thing. But when this auto played this last night. Couldn't sleep a wink.
When Enterprise was kind of prematurely ended I wrote a treatment. Post-Voyager: I came up with a simple idea and fleshed it out with the thing that's most important to me and that's diversity and cool space battles.
I came up with the setting that a Tellarite Admiral commissioned a Slipstream drive Emergency Response Ship as a bit of a passion project. More cobbled together like the international Space station than a traditional Starfleet vessel. I imagined a football shaped carrier built around a dry dock as a frame rather than in one. Disparate parts. Disparate systems with different crews working together to run these things that aren't designed to be together. But work better as a whole. The idea is that it can pop up anywhere with a fleet of support vessels inside. Evacuate colonies, repair starships, move massive amounts of cargo. The ultimate emergency response vehicle to service the planets of the Federation rather than seek out new life.
The Admiral is not a human, he's not an explorer. He's a bureaucrat. A politician who couldn't get Starfleet to approve his concept so he formed a coalition built on promises he may or may not be able to keep with friends he may not like or trust very much.
Romulans engineers to manage a donated singularity for power. One of the Klingon houses is charged with Security. Denobulins volunteered to run hospitality to take care of refugees and colonists. Bajor got a medical contract and sent a Kai. Vulcan survey science teams assigned by the academy man the sensors, computers, and stellar cartography. The Quartermaster and cargo are run by a Ferengi in exchange for supplying replicators and holodecks. The first officer is an Orion female with syndicate ties. Cardiassians and Andorians sent diplomats with their own security details. Very few humans is what I was going for and lots of internal strife for high ideas to prevail over.
But my main fantasy is for a big Starfleet vessel to pop out a slipstream open its front bay and shoot out a pair of Defiants, a Bird of Prey, and a Hideki Patrol ship while full wings of Delta flyers launch from the rear all under the command of an Andorian Captain who opens calms and says "Hi, we're from the Federation and we're here to help"

My understanding is that the reason for the alternate reality with the new movies is due to licensing issues. Video games such as Star Trek Online follow the original timeline and have done some interesting things with it.

I'm in the minority because I really like Discovery...I needed to let go of my timeline of Trek to like it but understanding it's following its own storyline is helpful. Lots of excellent characters and it's definitely modern in the way it tells the story.
I'm also someone who loved Star Wars but am very meh about the Disney shows...

Honestly I view new trek 1 as a perfect movie-Not a perfect Star Trek movie. But as for arcs, characterization, casting, dialogue, cinema… fantastic. JJ at his best. If compared to what a trek movie should be it’s different but good.

Re: Food Height and Corn vs Beat syrup.
I am not sure but I highly doubt that Corn syrup was a major thing back then. We have it in all our products today mostly because: 1) we subsidize the production of it quite a bit and 2) we tax imports of Cane and Beat sugar from abroad where it grows far better. So I suspect Beat was chosen over Corn because of price, not

I don't know if Brandon and Dan read the comments, but I'm curious what they thought about Bryan Fuller's (the original show runner of Discovery before he left/was fired before filming) original vision for the reboot of Star Trek television. I don't hear it talked about a lot, but my understanding is that he wanted a Star Trek anthology show where each season had a new setting, characters, and story. I wrote a reddit post about such a thing years before Discovery was even announced and continue to be disappointed that it was never done because I personally believe it would have been a fantastic way to explore more niche areas of Trek that perhaps wouldn't warrant multiple season, but also as a way to back-door pilot longer series and gauge audience reactions. I also think that changing his initial single season of Discovery into a multi season show is a big reason why the first season fell on its face so hard; they had to re-write and redirect his story so that the natural ending didn't happen (I'm convinced that's why S1 ended in such a ham-fisted way).
The other reason that I would have liked an anthology series is that it could have both allowed the show to explore new ideas and characters, but also revisit existing ones without greenlighting a full series. Like, I know there will almost certainly never be a revival of DS9, but with a show like this, they could have had a season where they followed up on it.

I grew up on Voyager, was my favorite for a long time until I watched TNG all the way through. I love Voyager's premise, but TNG's crew just feels more close knit and lands better. Janeway. . .does some pretty questionable things, she has her reasons, but sometimes its just like 'why would you do that?' Granted, every captain has that. Picard will always be the best, I don't think they can top that.

I fall squarely into the Star Wars camp in the Wars/Trek divide, but I still like Trek.
First Contact is my favorite because Picard is pushed beyond his limit. I like seeing him at his worst, it reminds me he is human and I like seeing him overcome.
My kids like Prodigy. It's okay. Feels like Star Wars, but Clone Wars it is not.
    Into Darkness was lousy.
    Strange New Worlds is amazing.
My favorite series is Enterprise, if only because it was the first one I watched as it was on. It isn't the best, but I don't care.
The fact that Mr. Sanderson is an MST3K and Rifftrax fan sets my MSTie heart aflutter! The Gizmoplex is possibly my favorite thing ever!
How about a Stargate episode? A criminally overlooked series that actually serves as an excellent showcase of a Sci-Fi version of Sanderson's Laws.

I agree with nearly everything here. (and i adore Babylon 5!) I have had two thoughts about some of the classic movies that you might find interesting.
The last time I watched Star Trek V was after a full viewing of the Original Series and it surprised me in that out of the original six films, it actually felt the most like an oversized original episode. TOS never quite took itself as seriously as the other films and series that came after it, and Trek V felt more connected to TOS as a result.
I think Star Trek Nemesis, for all it's faults, would have gone over a thousand times better if they'd simply had Patrick Stewart play Shinzon as well as Picard. Letting Stewart cut loose in a villainous version of Picard would have been a delight.
