  • Appearing to be almost identical to Daiwa's long time ultra premium Samurai braid, their new J-Briad could be an exceptional value. In this review I look at the nuances of this line and provide a report after having fished it for 10 weeks.

    Bought a spool of this in the fall and absolutely loved it. By far my favorite braid! Cheaper than power pro and far better imo. I did notice a little bit of improved casting distance which I believe is from the reduced friction going through the guides. I like the chartreuse for the better visibility and bite detection. I always run a 12'+ leader and dye the first 20-30 feet or braid with a black sharpie. I used the 30 lb a lot to 12 lb leader for cranks and 20 lb fluoro for spinnerbaits and jigs and haven't broken off or casted off anything yet.

    I've been using both 30 and 65lbs test J-Braid, fishing for bass and musky, for the past 4 months and I've had zero problems, no break-offs, no knots, nothing but good experiences with this line. And for the price you really can't go wrong. I totally recommend it.

    I bought 58 lb j braid for a ssv5500 spinfisher and the line snaped off on a sink bait after that I casted a swim bait but more careful and i discovered a few small and big knots but it didn't break of thanks to the light cast, so today i did some research and you where just describing the same problems

  • @bboyrygis
    @bboyrygis Před 6 lety +2

    To prevent the lure from flying I run a leader. That gives the lure some shock so it doesn't break off. Even more so if you're using a heavy lure. If you don't want braid to break from casting, run at least 50lb braid (also depends on brand). Anything under will break if it gets stuck in a cast.

    Excellent and concise review, like all of the ones you do. All the qualities you describe are why I like Tuf-Line 4orce and Domin8 braid over Power Pro in terms of handling/noise/suppleness. But like the J-Braid, I have had a few 'snap-off's' because of an unnoticed dig-in/knot. Thing is, with that soft uncoated quality, I can basically back my spool tension completely off and it just flies though the line guides on long casts...whereas Power Pro has a bit more friction and stiffness, and can even induce a birdsnest. So I kind of take it with the territory and try to watch out for the snap-offs, because over the course of sessions I appreciate the better handling more, and the snap-off's by comparison are farther and fewer in between.

  • @myshowvids
    @myshowvids Před 4 lety

    I have both Powerpro and Daiwa J braid x8 installed on my reels. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
    J braid is more for vertical jigging or shore jigging. The braid going through the guides are very quiet. The braid is round , light, soft, and smooth but very limpy. Due to the braid being limpy, the casting distance is dropped by 30% compared to Powerpro. Also, the braid line is prone to fray over a period of time from the guides. Not to mention the braid color bleeds quite fast. The soft limpy braid helps the jig lure action to manoeuvre freely in the water.
    The powerpro is excellent in all levels. It casts very far due to the braid being wax coated. Very tough and abrasion resistant. The braid color doesn't bleed as fast. The braid line is thin, stiff and flexible in a good way. It helps the line to run smooth through the guides without having the line to be limpy resulting longer casting distance. The only problem is the line making noise through the guides and the cost but the cost of the quality is very well worth it. Perfect for surf casting for long distance.

    When you get break offs with 40 feet of line out on your cast the line is too thin, go up to the next size. That will cure that problem. Its common on high end, thinner diameter lines. When selecting braid, especially for bigger reels, diameter is more important than break strength. Different diameter lines will cause your reel to spin at different speeds. Thinner line wont allow the spool to slow down as quickly as the lure is slowing down in flight. You're100% correct concerning color, it doesnt matter one little bit! Hi vis yellow or disappearing red, it all catches fish equally. I wish someone would offer a natural, uncolored line.

    Bought this same 50lb line on a whim when I saw how cheap the price was,then I saw this reveiw and wish I didn't....BUT , after using it on 5 trips so far , I could not be happier . I am notorious for the dreaded stop short,snap line,lure flies away scenario, I have accepted they are mostly from half assed angry just missed a big bass casts...And where power pro original broke off time and time again, J-Braid is hanging strong. Actually I was quite surprised. I only use braid for topwater ,and only fish Jitterbugs,frogs, and recenty added the Arbogast buzz plug,which is large and awkward, and when I did it with that lure and the line did not break..I was sold

My Power Pro lines last too long and I love them. the color don't guaranty you to catch more fish. As I said braided line is only good for casting not for presentation to the fish. Use fluorocarbon leader and better hook set up, and when the fish are picky live baits will beat any artificial lure. One last thing, location...location...location.

      The only thing about the Savage that is a con is that if you accidentally cast it onto the bank and hit a rock, it will crack and then water seeps in and it sinks and doesn't swim as good...so its not super durable, but for only $20 its ok if you break one. Just don't cast it onto the shore

    It's hard to believe that 50lb test is breaking off with a swimbait (even with a sudden stop). From the way you are explaining it, it seems like you are going straight from braid to lure. Could it be that the knot is slipping and not breaking off? I always use fluoro or mono leader so haven't really tested straight braid to anything. Just bought a 30lb J braid because it was on sale. Hope I don't get any breakoffs!

    Excellent vid brother. Yo know I'm a Samurai head through and through but I know what it's like not feeling good about your line like that. When I first started SB fishing, it was Big Game that messed me up with break offs. Luckily I haven't had anything bad happen w Samurai yet. There was another line that they were talking about when they introduced the J-Braid too, a REAL high end 12 carrier I think. We were all excited about the J because of the price point. The E. Honda on some of the earlier ads certainly didn't hurt either, haha
    So let me ask, because this is just about ALL I care about with braid anymore, would you say it stayed the same as Samurai after your trial in terms of how quiet it was? Was it as quiet to begin with?

      +toadslayer72 What up what up?! Yeah man.... for practical purposes it started and stayed as smooth (quite) as the Samurai. It could be that one is slightly more or less smooth, but if so it is not perceivable from casual handling. Honestly it doesn't make sense because one would think that a product so similar, sold at a significantly lower price, would cannibalize sales of Samurai. So, I have no idea what is justifying Samurai's price unless it is to be phased out in place of J-Braid and this is all happening due to advances in manufacturing. Perhaps they are now able to make Samurai at 1/2 the cost they used to and figured to build sales momentum they would reissue it under a new and exciting name. Who knows....all speculation.

    It’s because the fibers are shorter, that’s what’s giving it the soft supple feel. Technically for spinning tackle you don’t want soft supple lines that soft, supple line cuts into the real wraps and it also wraps around the rod tip. You should look into something that stiffer like fins, windtamer, or any of the four carrier lines. Now I like the smoother lines, but the soft supple thing gets taken out of context. There’s also newer fibers like is izanas compared to the old specter fibers. It’s all different stuff.

    what do you think about using the more supple braids on spinning gear and then using the Berkley for casting gear? seams as though you might not have the break off with lighter lures while also have a line with less memory. then on casting gear the memory isn't such an issue and the Berkey would be the better choice there.

    Used 20 pound test on a spinning reel and noticed the wind knots came on the cast directly after fighting a fish or fighting a snag. Yes , it digs in to itself under pressure( at least in 20# test).
    I am going to keep using braid to a leader for almost everything but go with higher diameter braids. Regular spectra has worked better for me than slick 8 , better than this J-braid.

      Been using the 50# SS8 all summer and haven't had any issues. I'm throwing sinkers up to 8oz with chunk bait. Hooked a sunken tree branch last week and I drug it up the river then my 40# flouro leader finally broke.
      I did have one snap off, but that was my fault, I thumbed the spool because my cast was going to the other side of the river. Thumbing a hard cast with a 4oz pyramid isn't good if you don't have anything to absorb the energy.
      I'm mainly fishing flathead & channel cats in a fast river.
      I don't have any problems with the SS8 digging in either. Maybe it was spooled up loose?

    I'm sure you've already addressed this somewhere, but I can't find it... What part of Jersey are you from? I pretty much knew from the accent, but this video, with your license prominently displayed on your hat, eliminated any doubts. 😀
    Just so I understand completely, are you saying essentially all your break offs on this line and Samurai have been on casts? I know that can occur when a couple of little loops form or you've caught a large fish or snagged up and try to pull it free (and it sounds sickeningly like a gunshot). In any case, if it hasn't been breaking on hooksets, I still might give it a serious workout. Part of what's going on, I'm sure, has to do with the fact that Japanese lines label their actual break strength whereas most of the domestic lines like Power Pro, Berkley, and Sufix rate them sort of arbitrarily by diameter, which is why Samurai is so much thinner at each labeled strength. I'd bet 80# Sufix breaks over 100# on an IGFA test for straight pull.

      +Randy Thomas Central NJ Randy, but I fish mostly northern/northwestern waters....just like that part of the state. To the point on the braid; Yes, all my snap offs were on the cast. So much more energy can be imparted to the line during a cast because the rod is not acting like a dampener like it is on a hookset.
      Yup....I'm aware of the line rating system your referring to with domestic lines being stronger due to sheer size and vice versa for Japanese lines.
      I would totally recommend you test it out. My results have been fairly consistent, but I would be highly interested to know other people's outcomes.

    • @Stratollac
      @Stratollac Před 8 lety

      +KeepinItReelFishing I'm in Central NJ as well (Warren). I haven't gotten out anywhere near as much as I would like to in recent years (it's a long story...) but I'll be getting a decent tin boat in the next couple weeks. It'll be very comfortably fishable as is, but it'll be a bit of a project to get it the way I want.
      Anyway, I'll let you know how I do with the J-Braid. I've really only used braid for frogs and some spinning applications (and for all musky fishing) in the recent past (tried it for everything when it first came out), so I'm looking forward to working braid into my act for more things this year and seeing what I like it for and which brands work for me.

    Why are you so obssessed with the hue/colour of the braid? Most people worry about the strength. Superficial madness

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  Před 6 lety +1

      Because the strength of braids are all extremely high as compared to mono, copoly, or fluoro. 40lb, 50lb, 65lb....these are all of strengths that no bass angler dreamed of 30 years ago. The variable in these lines is not strength (reference TackleTour.com for actual qualitative testing to see only slight differences in said strength), but rather the lines other properties. As it happens the one area where this is in fact a large variability in braids is in their ability to maintain their color. As I stated in the video this in no way affects the physical performance (strength), but it is an area where the common angler can readily detect differences and I think most people don't want their green line to turn white within a few weeks.

      +Kyle Paine You sure can Kyle. I use 65lb braid to a copoly or fluorocarbon leader, but you can do whatever you want. Although many people insist you should use a "clear" type line, there are more than a few successful anglers out there who fish slower presentations on straight braid. Personally, since using a leader is easy I just assume use it in the event braid might be a factor in the fish biting. Learn the Alberto knot if you don't already....its super easy and I have yet to ever have it break on me.

    This folds up relatively small and extends out to a good length. czcams.com/users/postUgkxphFK7ETiDP5G4IGsNcg7vbASDp_YfDpI I would warn that while it folds down to a convenient size, it's still a bit too large to fit into my tacklebox, which I think is a pretty "normal" size. I guess a hardcore fisherman might have a hardcore box that's larger than mine, but for the typical once-a-year fisherman like me, it will have to be carried outside the box.

    Color ?who cares..in saltwater fishing "we" and "I" always tie on a mono leader at least, usually a sacrificial leader, less strong than the braid, because I fish SNAGS! I TIE a quick knot with my DAIWA SOOKUO KNOT TOOL, yeah Daiwa and hard as hell to find but Amazon does sell them. Did a video about it and yeah, it's a super tool for FAST braid to mono (light lines) connections while in the wind on a boat. BTW, my fishing is very line harmful, and I've actually tried KastKing 20, and so far have nothing bad to say and its recycled plastic bottles! 10 trips and no real color loss. I don't see bass fishing being all that much tougher on tackle than HD saltwater. Never ever had a problem using Powerpro or Hi-seas grand slam which is the direct opposite of Powerpro. I like the stiff stuff, too soft is often too spiderweb'ish.

    • @KeepinItReelFishing
      @KeepinItReelFishing  Před 8 lety

      +Fishing Rod The Berkley still very much had much of the "plastic" coating after my 5 weeks of testing as evidence of the side by side comparison against the new line still on the spool and the similarity of color. When the coating is REALLY gone the line will become a very very light green/yellow (as observed on Power Pro slick 8 & Suffix 832 after 2 years of use on each respectively) At that point the lines will behave "more like" which was said specifically. I very rarely deal in absolutes or superlatives in speech because we can't 100% know exactly how something will behave and hence my description of the aging of the product. Additionally, the fact remains that if nothing else you have a period of time in which that coating will be in place, and during my testing (and reflecting on other similar lines used in the past) coated lines have broke very rarely, whereas the uncoated line (J-Braid) in this test as well Daiwa Samurai braid which I have used for a few years have the capacity to break at any time because they are extremely limp from the get go. There is no drawing board. Those are the qualities of each type of line, and my observations during this test and more generally over the past few years are what I stated. People can do as they please with the information. But, I think knowing the initial, as well as long term characteristics of the products...as well as how that applies to potential breakages, is beneficial.
