  • In an extended monologue, James O'Brien reflects on the ongoing war in Gaza, where more than 31,045 Palestinians have been killed and 72,654 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.
James reflects on Benjamin Netanyahu's and his government's role in damaging all of the 'PR' Israel has built for itself since their independence, and whether the damage done could be 'generational'.

For that, you need to go back to the Romans who overthrew Judah and The Kingdom Of Israil following a 60 year war with the Jewish residents, kicked out all the Jews and renamed the land Palestine. The Arab V Jew issue didn't really start until the colonization by the Otterman Empire in or around 1516 which A brought in Arab settlers and B allowed Jews to re enter the lands.

I mean, it's a language group. Ethnicity is a social construct, and race is just a convenient shorthand for salient characteristics denoting apparent difference. The term anti-semitic is used in the modern context to refer to hatred, prejudice etc towards Jews, but of course Jewish identity is itself complex, involving Ashkenazi heritage, matrilineal descent, the religion, Hebrew as a language, even just social identity.
The term is also abused, unfortunately, because anti-semitism (as understood today) is a widespread and serious problem, that unfortunately many cynical people have exploited for propagandistic purposes.
But yeah, the Akkadians and their descendants the neo-Assyrians were also afrosemitic, though the Sumerians were not, and so much of the oldest writing we have is from that backdrop via cuneiform.

Anyone who talks about this issue needs to start being more honest. That includes James.
This isn't just Nuttyahoo. If you watch what comes out of Izraeli media, as well as the documented sentiments of its population and surveys conducted on them, you realize that it's societal. I'm not the only one who have observed this. Ilan Pappe have said this, so did others like Miko Peled, Norman Finkelstein, Avi Shlaim, etc
So even if Bibi gets removed, what's the guarantee that whoever replaces him will be better and not a Ben-Gvir or Smotrich?
The answer is not to expect them to change. It's for the global community to force them to change. Through divestment, boycott, disinclusion from international events, sanctions, both political, social, and economical. Make it such that they will have no other choice but to reflect. Because as it stands, the major powers of the world are still coddling and spoiling them rotten. Time to take the kid gloves off.

It isn't a case for me that one side or the other of the death toll matters more for me. What matters is that the actions of Hamas were disgusting, and, equally that this attack on the Palestinian people was totally disproportionate. That the Hamas attacks were used merely as a pretense for Israel to achieve something by force that it could not through apartheid. What matters is that Israel has apparently finally crossed a line for many that, for me, it had crossed decades ago. What matters is that finally, people are beginning to rightfully criticize the actions of Israel against the Palestinian people. That Israel's response was not militarily guided, it was ideologically guided. What it has done has totally undermined its ability to be, in my opinion, misguidedly, trusted by some to be an arbiter of peace in the Middle East. Truthfully, people who believed peace could be had in the Middle East while Israel kept the Palestinian people oppressed by apartheid were wrong. Any group, oppressed for long enough, put through enough hardship, will eventually take action to rectify it. With the Palestinians under apartheid, Israel ensured that any illusion of peace was just that, an illusion.

Their aims and goals are all that counts in their version of the world.
The question that James should explore is how does Britain and the US handle the loss of any sense of national moral integrity? Both countries are the largest providers of the material, monetary and political cover required to pursuer whatever one calls this action. We are as, if not more, complicit in this human disaster. We all have some serious blood on our national hands. The Arab/Persian countries that have turned a blind eye and deaf ear to this catastrophe are as guilty.
