At the battlefield itself, there was an artist who was able to blow up some of Brady's photos; one was of a dead soldier; and render them into 3D. These things were life-sized. He had 3D glasses. He aligned the photographs in the exact perspective of where you were standing. It was beyond creepy to see a 3D image of a dead soldier from a Civil-War-era photo, right next to a rock that's still there to this day.

As a Civil War buff and reenactor I read/study a great deal on all the battles, but what I'm continuously drawn to think about is what happened next, to the town the war just swept through. Imagine Gettysburg 1863, a quiet little farming community and college town, year round population about 2000. Suddenly almost 200,000 men descend on your sleepy little hamlet. Then they spend the next 3 hot summer days killing and maiming each other, in wool uniforms. Then they leave, leaving behind more than 5000 dead and tens of thousands of wounded.
Think of them on July fourth looking out of their windows at rain pouring down. on wounded men, most tried to help.
Can you imagine what Gettysburg smelled like on July 5th after 3 days of battle followed by a day of heavy rain then another hot day?
It's not just the dead and wounded humans, but a countless number of dead and dying horses and mules. Also this town has been used as an outhouse by nearly 200,000 men for 3 days, many of these men had diarrhea and/or dysentery.
Imagine that foul stench? That would be so disgusting you would taste it in the back of your throat. Also think of the massive clouds of flies.

Exactly. Pictures can never convey the stench of war. Men who have survived combat have told me how appalling it is. In 1863 life was hard , dirty and brutal enough without a war raging.

View the field of battle at Gettysburg where Pickett began his famous charge. The distance, the wood and stone fence, bravery from each side. Yet, it's heard more now than at anytime that reparation should be paid and the 650,000 of all Americans, all colors, all religions, that lost their lives, be forgotten and destroyed.

Slippery Storm maybe not, there were shittons of Union dead in the Civil War just as there was Southern dead, so statistically speaking, he would have probably killed you being the South had the upper hand for the first part of the war. Union was losing battle after battle after battle for the first couple years. you would have most likely been killed by him being a southern Soldier and you being a union

You're 100% right. I have known men who survived combat and they have told me it is the most horrifying thing on Earth. Particularly being under shellfire. But they will tell you in terms that those of us who have never witnessed the horror of it will understand. They can't truly convey what war is like. Only to another combat veteran can they relate.

Terrible waste of young lives! Most thought war was a game like a fistfight I suppose, but quickly learned what a speedy cannonball could do or a Powerful musket at 100 yards or less? Those boys just visualized the Glory of Victory, or of a cause they thought little about! Eager to do something besides cleaning out Momma's Barn floor, they sought-out excitement like any teenager or young Man, but so many were delusional that they deserted in groves, and thought; "To He-- with this cause, I'm getting out of here!"
Many Southerners felt that the Black Man doesn't know any better, and should be where he was!! They want Freedom, but what are they going to do with it once they get it," was the tone of the day, but in some cases, Blacks stayed right where they were or came back from Freedom after finding the road too Bumpy to get anywhere? Then with Lincoln assassinated, they felt all alone and abandoned, feeling the World was against them?
"If old Abe had lived, many thought, things would have been a lot different, as he would've made sure us Black people got a fair Break and not leave us alone among the Vultures out there?" The World out there was a vicious one, with many Whites feeling the same way as Black people did, but who thought about the "Other Guy" in those days? Working hard is just one facet of Freedom, as other things such as learning our Constitution, and preparing to learn a trade were obscure Dreams that many just could not attend to? Many more pressing issues captured the minds of the freed Slaves, the safety and security of their Families was just one of them!! Then many stereotyped them as Primitive animals, never realizing what Slavery does to the mind! In those days, even now in many cases, some Blacks thought that the only thing to do was to become a strong and dominant male, where they would never be pushed around anymore!! Some White people saw the problems to some degree, but since they were under the cloud of ignorance that permeated the White Community, they pretty much had to think the same way, or be ostracized for not doing what was best for the White community, at least in their minds? Can you imagine the pressures and stresses old Abe had to endure, knowing everyday that 1,000's would just as soon see him dead, than to do any more damage to the "White" community! It must have been horrible to be a leader in those days where the President had to think of everybody, not just the white people?
Anyway, being thrown-out to the Capitalistic Wolves in those days, was akin to being tortured or even whiplashed? Few Co's would hire them, many Co's rejected them outright, many people continued to humiliate and degrade them, even punishing them if they walked on the same side of the street as "White" people! What kind of Freedom is that when no one wants you? Nowadays, some of those facts and feelings still come back to haunt many Black people, especially those who haven't made any Integration progress? Yes, it is easy to say; "Black people get out there and keep pushing," but when all the past thoughts keep irritating their emotional system, progress is next to impossible, especially when a Balanced mind is so far away from reality? The mind tends to stay in the Emotional pattern that is important to them, so Freedom will only arrive when that emotional obsession relaxes to some degree, and that will only come when common Sense Human factors are understood more? Yes life is not all good for sure, but it is not all bad either, as bad means people are evil? But people are also affected by the culture they are living under, which forces them to do things without thinking, making "Pressures" the reason why people do what they do! To a large degree, that eliminates the "Evil" connotation, and brings "Reason" into the picture!
Actions may show one thing, but what internal factors, or experiences, precipitated those actions is rarely ever seen, so the Picture of EVIL remains deeply embedded in the mind as the reason, nothing else?? Underneath every action there is a History, which is hidden and forgotten in the turmoil of those emotional actions!!
I just thank God that the Hitler massacres and destruction didn't affect me that much, or I would be a screaming maniac if that's all I thought about! My Slavic Brothers from Overseas especially, have that experience haunting them to this day, and still have nightmares of the Holocaust which affected my people as well as the Jewish people? With TV documentaries, I think about that stuff more now than I ever did in my life, but thank God , I developed some strengths over my growing years to overcome that possible obsession!!
Yes, the Civil War brings to mind many facts and thoughts from people who tend to see things in different ways! It seems always to be the other Guy's fault, never ours! So it is a healthy thing to view the other side just to see what makes those people "Tick" the way they do! Only then will we learn enough to create a better mind balance which will make us function better as Adults and as Participants in this Free society? IMO.

      1. "They" were already free!
      2. "They" were fighting to preserve slavery!
      3. "They" ended up losingg anyway!
      4. "Their" family was and still is free today!

Only 25% of all Southerners owned slaves, it was the wealthy class. The middle class and lower classes did not for the most part unless they inherited them. So they weren't consciously fighting for someone else's slaves. They were invaded, their government tells them that they are at war and drafts/conscripts them. Many had no choice, join or go to jail just like today. www.civilwarhome.com/conscription.htm

      @carolneaves3630 Před 6 lety +1

I know only the wealthy owned slaves, and i wonder if anyone knew that the first slave owner was a black man in Africa. He's the one who sent his own people over to the new world, for a profit of course. A lot of the slaves were treated good, but we don't hear about that. Sad.
