    Thank you Old Guardian. You mostly talked about the value of Catch Up Packs for new or non-active players (because that's who they are aimed at), but it can't help but feel like the loyal base who have actually spent lots of money in the game get screwed once again. You supported Blizzard through the years and built up a wonderful collection? Too bad, with Catch Up Packs you get nearly nothing. You didn't play at all? Step right up and get a fast pass to getting hundreds of cards for a low fee.
    I understand they are here to make money and they need new players in order to do that, but there has never been a Blizzard game where I have felt valued as a long-time or even financially supportive player. This is just yet another example.

      And yet you keep playing. There's reason why companies are trying their hardest to get new blood. If veterans stayed for this long already, they're gonna keep playing regardless. Meanwhile you see even fighting games, the most gatekept and beginner-unfriendly genre finally caving in and making control schemes specifically for scrubs and newbies, even if they know that veterans will hate that their game is being "dumbed down". Companies will value hospitality to new players more and more now with rising competition.

      well the barrier to entry is so high to hearthstone atm for new players, if u dont add something like catchup packs to the game, their wont be a game soon because its just too hard for new players to get into it. He literally just broke down step by step why even these mega catchup pack bundles that gives literally the equivelent to like 50 packs in each expansion, is not even close to getting new players to even a budget deck stage. So... just imagine from a brand new players standpoint what the games like without these packs... the game is so old now, either stuff like this gets added or new players cant join and the game dies.

    Great analysis, once they announced new packs type I was excited but was waiting for your video. I have most of the cards but was hoping for additional help with getting legendaries and epics from older expansions.

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci +6

      Sadly, getting Epic and Legendary cards is exactly what catch-up packs will NOT do. They're here to get you the commons and most rares and that's it.

  • @redbarchetta

  • @leggoeggo416
    @leggoeggo416 Před 8 měsíci +3

    Thanks for analyzing so quickly! I think Blizzard is hyping this up too much and people will be disappointed. They will expect to get more based on that promo that Blizz posted. If the guaranteed legendary within 10 packs rule applies, then it would be better.

    well 50 packs open for a returning is something plus in theory they still give a free deck with good legendaries to play(will be outdated soon but if pick wisely will have the legendaries meta +- of the class) Then they are maybe changing the old offer that randomly pops on ppl with 170 packs or so no? y told a friend to check his battlenet that played alot of time ago hearthstone but never pop up the reward..

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Regular duplicate protection rules apply. If you ever owned the cards, they count as owned. Also, there are no packs that skip rarities. Rarity comes first, then the card. You get duplicate commons for the common cards even if you miss other rarities.

    I’m surprised you didn’t talk about the pity timers for these packs in more detail. As far as I’m aware they are approximating the 10 pack initial pity timer of a new set so there should be at least some calculus from experienced players as to whether a limited number of these packs will be worth getting if they come in cheap/small enough bundles.

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Pity timers are worse than regular packs, but you were not writing about those but about the first guaranteed Legendary. That comes within 50 cards per set. So, you need up to 50 catch-up packs to get a guaranteed Legendary as an experienced player. Now, you will get one for each set, so that evens out to 10 packs per Legendary, right? Well, yes, except that it takes a lot of these packs to see any, and the packs are otherwise worse than regular packs with worse drop rates and no Golden cards for dust. If you want Legendaries from each five sets and there is a good way to buy 50 packs with the cost of pack below 0.9$/pack , then it could be worth it.

  • @odinofasgard
    @odinofasgard Před 7 měsíci +1

    I bought the 10 Catch Up Packs deal and then came here to see if I'd made a mistake. I realize I should have done things in the other order. Oops.
    It was a bad decision ... or maybe not. Out of the 10 packs, I got a grand total of 51 cards. Not awesome. But, here's the strange part. I got 5 Legendaries. I don't know if I was just crazy lucky or if there's some reason I got 5.
    I don't regret my purchase, but I won't be buying more.

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 7 měsíci

      It was really lucky. I opened the Catch-Up Packs available for free, so a bit less than 10, and got 1 Legendary.

    what if you disenchant your whole standard catch up packs collection before opening them would that be worth it ?

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 7 měsíci

      Standard duplicate protection rules. If you owned the cards once, they count as owned.

  • @seishiro.3492
    @seishiro.3492 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Let's say I collected my cards to level 80% before and then I disenchanted all of them. This means that if I bought that package I would get fewer cards than someone who never had them before, even though I now have no cards left. Is it right?

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Yes, the packs work on duplicate protection rules, so they know you once owned the cards and count those.

  • @ZahlendreherMatt
    @ZahlendreherMatt Před 8 měsíci

    I'm not sure I understand the pity timer aspect correctly... Does this mean that 1catch up pack will add +1 to EACH expansion's pity timer? So +5 pity points in total instead of just 1 from a regular pack (albeit spread over 5 counters)?

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci

      No, they have their own pity timers. Those pity timers are based on the number of cards you get from them per expansion.

    Are you saying that at full value 20 catch up packs will get me 2 legend + 9 epic? or is it times five, once for each expansion, totaling 10 legend and 45 epic? I can probably build a tier 2 deck with 45 epics and most rares/ some commons.

    For veteran and active players, these won't be anything to go out of your way for at all, but for someone just getting into the game or returning from like 5 years ago, they are quite nice and a huge shortcut if they want to build a collection instead of dusting for meta decks

      Hi, I literally left the game 5 years ago and returned yesterday, appreciate these.
      A pity I need to wait a few days. I recognised in time that I can't open anything, because that will diminish the values of these packs. I bought preorder and welcome back bundles, with the gold I also have that means 240 packs I can't open yet to not make the catch up packs worse.
      Anyway, I think once I open these I won't feel so left behind.

      As it happens, there is a revamped new player experience in the game since Tuesday, which gives new players 3 free decks. Returning players get one, as before. For brand new players, things are looking quite good. I will have a written article about it coming soon. But yeah, these catch-up packs, by themselves, are not a silver bullet.

    I am the targeted person. I JUST came back since Blizzcon scratched the itch. I don't really know where I sit percentage, but most of my cards are from over 2 years ago. I have no issue with it not insta competitive. My only real issue is that it seems to be locked behind an expensive bundle. If I could buy them separately for a more digestible fee, I may consider it.

    As usual, rewarding the people who don't play so they come back and buy their overpriced "cards" instead of rewarding players for actually playing the game. I reinstalled this game because they gave me 150 packs (I know I cant complain about that lol). But only to find out that I only got them because I haven't logged in for years. Also they gave me a meta deck for free which was also for the same reason. Left me with a sour taste in my mouth and feeling sorry for anybody who plays and spends money in this game. It just saddens me how this company values predatory monetization over the health of their game, and they wonder why their player base is declining and that their games are soulless. Sorry for the rant and cheers for the vid!😂

    • @OldGuardian
      @OldGuardian  Před 8 měsíci +3

      The 150 packs is actually random experimentation on Blizzard's part. People who have been playing all the time have also received them. There is also a chance to get 20 packs from the same campaign. Of course, most players get nothing.

    • @Willowisp927
      @Willowisp927 Před 8 měsíci +3

      You shouldn't be sour for people playing. You actually missed more than 150 packs and exclusive content by not playing for years. I also got more than 20k dust ffrom disenchants and lot of cool skins, which you actually missed. People tend to have selective memory and forget the benefits of actually playing the game lol.
      And obviously they should implement a economic strategy to lure returning players. The fact that you came back is the proof that it works. Throwing tantrums and bitching is what makes gaming community nowadays. If the population is declining is because the game is really old and it would be actually surprising it didn't. Their revenue is rising though, which clearly denotes success in a capitalist company.

  • @Willowisp927
    @Willowisp927 Před 8 měsíci +2

    With all commons and rares, basically the only thing left for players is to choose which deck they want to go and craft the legendary that makes it. With all the nerfs that are coming, it's not that hard to make 1600 dust. Plus people can experiment with commons and rares (mostly aggro decks don't need legendaries) until they can find something they like. They are giving so mcuh free content with community twitch videos, free pack in shop, events that basically require you to just play the game to complete, it's not that hard to get a few decks.
    Yes the packs are not a miracle, but it's not that bad either. I don't see any issues with it.

    • @ryanscott2745
      @ryanscott2745 Před 8 měsíci +3

      This just isn’t true. Any competitive deck out there right now has at minimum 2 legendaries and I can’t really think of many good ones with just two. That’s 3200 dust. Tell me where you get that to begin with when you are f2p? Not to mention when the meta changes and that deck you just spent all that dust on is now doing horrible against the new meta. The system in place is garbage.

    How can you keep promoting Hearthstone when they are cheating, they stop you getting to Legendary by the use of thier own bots. So unfair, as they only do this when you are not spending on the game, they forget that it is your loyalty that gets you to that position. A good way to lose customers.
