Ferdinand Magellan's voyage known as the Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation was a historic maritime expedition that marked the first successful attempt to sail around the world. This expedition which took place from 1519 to 1522 was a key event in the Age of Exploration sponsored by Spain and commanded initially by Ferdinand Magellan.
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who believed he could find a western route to the Spice Islands (now part of Indonesia) thereby bypassing the need to navigate around the tip of Africa which was controlled by Portugal. After failing to secure support from the Portuguese king Magellan turned to Spain's King Charles I (later Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) who agreed to sponsor the expedition
