RJ, I just did this to my mom's old Raleigh (the twist shifters were a no-go with her arthritis). Strangely, the Shimano 3x7 trigger shifters I ordered are acting the opposite way they should. When I push the right thumb button, the derailleur knocks the chain down to the small cog, and when I pull the trigger it climbs to the larger cogs. What on Earth is going on here?
Rear derailleur is an MR40 "megarange", whatever that means.
Hi i just replaced my rear derailuer on a 26 inch roadmaster granite peak i added a sunrace rear derailuer will shimano shifters be compatible i have a shimano front derailuer coming in please let me know right away
RJ, I want to thank you for all your videos. I went from bike naïve to confidently tuning/repairing in a matter of months. I now have 6 bikes in my garage to help friends avoid shop maintenance charges. There are a lot of happy and safe cyclists out on the trials because of you. You're the man and I owe you!!
He's the best. I love how he works.
I just bought a used bike for my son and need to do this very same thing! Thanks a lot for you very informative videos!
Thank you very much! I have a Schwinn Ranger that I got practically new out of someone’s trash. It cost me NOTHING to get it into a rideable state. I’ve had it for years, but only recently started really riding. The grip shifters (particularly the front derailleur) are “just okay” and I’m looking to make an upgrade. This video was perfect! Thank you again!
I'm just learning basic bike maintenance and modification.
Thanks dude, you're the man!
I swear you are the best tutorial video on bike repair ever!!
Thanks RJ, my brother wants to convert his bike from grip to trigger. This takes the voodoo out of it! As usual, easy to follow...let's hope indexing goes as smoothly as it did for you :)
Very good tutorial. Makes it seem a lot less daunting once you actually understand how it works
Very helpful video. I was just thinking of swapping the handlebar on my road bike from drop bar to a flat bar, which would also require changing the shifters+brake levers. This looks like something I could probably do myself, instead of spending a ton of money for a mechanic to do it.
I appreciate th wealth of knowledge you are providing us for free. Thanks for helping us be safer bikers by teaching us how to maintain and work on our own bikes.
Great video. Just getting back into riding. Bought a new bike and after my first 17 mile ride today, I've decided I can't stand grip shift.. ur video was 100% easy to follow and right on track!!! Thanks for your time! Gonna sub to your channel so I can see what other things I may want to know, haven't rode in last 10 years. Haha finally getting back to my old ways!!! ✌️🚴💨
CineSkies hey dude. I too bought a shimano grip shift bike. I have some problem while shifting. Like the markings are not so precise which makes a mess during shifting. Do i just have the problem or you too? Amd how can i fix it. Mechanics costs alot btw :D
idk really, i stopped at the local bike shop and talked about adding more gears to my rear hub, and going w thumb shifters... i can NOT stand grip shift, its such crap all together, i hate how i can't use my whole grip while riding!
if i had to guess id say maybe the cables aren't tight, or maybe too tight, or maybe the derailleur needs some adjustment.... but I'm no bike mechanic at all. so i can't really say whats wrong w it!! sorry friend! support ur local bike shop, they will be there when u need them!! HAHA
Grip shift is horrible men !!!
@@audaguyz9176 have you indexed your gears yet? i took my bike to the shop to fix and they did and didn't charge me anything.
Out of all the cycling this and that channels I'm subbed to, yours is the most useful. Anything I want to learn you've got a video on it. Thank you for educating me.
Finally! A vid on how to get this done on the exact gears I have! 🥳 Ty for this
Finally? I posted this video almost 5 years ago. LOL
Thank You this gave me the confidence that I needed, and was able to replace/upgrade the left shifter on wifey's bike.
I just wanted to say thanks: I needed to fix my wife's bike this weekend, and your video helped a lot.
Simple to follow instructions and really informative.. learned a lot thanks ...
Really good video RJ! I found a bike that was being thrown out. I decided to fix it up and give to one of my neighbours kids. Your video was very easy to follow and understand. The refurbished bike works like new. Thanks again!
Not all heroes wear capes.
My grip shifters were so bad I could hardly shift at all. When I took them off I could barely twist them even with no load on them! Installed new trigger shifters as per your instructions and what difference! It wasn't so hard at all thanks to your video. Thank you!
I can't believe that I watched the whole video knowing Im going to the bike shop and going to have the guys do this. But im happy this video is here because I was wondering if this could be done. Im glad to see it can be. Thank you for this! I have subscribed
great tutorial! I feel a lot more confident now. Thank you!
Thanks man, super helpful stuff and it's a conversion I'm going to have done/ do soon.
great video and tutorial - I now know what i need to do the job and have confidence that I can do it myself and save a load of money! Thanks!
Thank you for putting these up. I hadn't worked on a bike in about sixty years; I was about 16 last time, and both my shifters went--poof--on the same day. Both of them just popped open. I was amazed. It was like the poem, "The Wonderful One-Horse Shay". They were very old and very used. I ordered replacements and waited three weeks and then I saw your instructions on this video and another one and no problem. Thanks again.
Aloyisius Peters Good to have you back riding again Sir !
Thanks for all the videos you have made, I've learned so much from you. 👍👍👍
Last night I spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my sons bicycle won't shift into 6th and 7th gear. Looked up all kinds of adjustment videos and worked on the bike only to finally give up and realize it needs new shifters and a new derailer. Cause it was a little bent, but I bent it so much more trying to fix it. So I got new parts on Amazon and this video is exactly what I need. Thank you.
You're like Wilson from Home Improvement and at 17:38 I finally got a shot of part of your face.
Great Video getting into rebuilding and building bikes with my daughter and this video will help me out alot.
Thanks for the video you did a great job and it's very helpful.
Thank you! Great video. Would love to know what the barrel adjusters that are on the shifters themselves should be tensioned to when pulling the cables through?
Nice, concise, exactly what I needed. Thanks!
you the best bike guy on YT I have to change my gears
I found this video very useful. I need to change the shifter grips on my old grip shift system so knowing how to get them off is good.
Well done video, very informative and helpful. Thanks !
Great video. Saved me lots of money. I was thinking of switching to levers from grip. But instead I'll just replace the broken grip shift on the right side. On my next bike, I'll get levers.
Had to change my daughter's grip to trigger shift...never done before and this vid made it so easy...thanks 😀
Hi RJ, your videos are extremely helpful. I would love to see a video with you talking about finding these bikes that you work on. I know you mentioned that you get them from Craigslist, thrift stores, eBay, etc. but I would enjoy learning about what you look for. thanks!
+Mitchell Lewis Here is one video that you might enjoy: facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy/videos/vb.715727678492032/932018183529646/?type=2&theater
I subbed coz of this video.... I hope to find more useful instructions from you. :D great videos
Thank you for making this video. I was thinking on doing this, buying this type of shifter and changing, I think isn't that hard, but I will watch to make sure that I will make this the right way.
Excellent commentary and demonstration. Thank you!
That was awesome dood. Thanks.
You are the best.... I subbed... Thankyou for the clear instructions.
Great video. Just what I needed.
have you ever tried using a compressor to blow the grips off it works great I have done it many times same idea get air between the grip and the handlebar
Great video! I was able to get this done in about 30 minutes. Shifting smooth now!
You speak very well and you are a very good instructor. Very clear.
Very helpful my bike has grip shift wanting to switch to trigger this will help me thank you 👌
That's exactly what I needed! perfect
That was very thorough. I now have a weekend project.
Thanks for all the vid just got a bike and know basic repairs cause of ur videos thanks u
Thank you for your help! Great Video!
I love these trigger shifters and have converted a few bikes to them. Mostly down tube to trigger.
You make it look so easy!
Thanks for the knowledge!
Thank you for the great explanation. Amazing what rubbing alcohol can do.
Very thorough. Excellent instructional video. In future, could you also mention what tools you might need before hand. Thanks again. Love from England
This exactly what I needed. Cant thank you enough! 😎👉👉
I just bought a bike that has the trigger shifters with brake levers like the ones you installed. I plan to install a 1000w 48v conversion kit. The kit has brake levers and twist throttle that come with it. What would you recommend to marry/join the two together?
I have just dug my mountain bike out of the garage and had a short ride on it for the first time in years. The grip shift was so stiff that I was stuck in the same gear all the way round. I want to replace the shifters and brakes so this video is great for me. One question- I currently have cantilever brakes on the bike. Can I use the same technique for those, or should I look to replace the brake mechanism too? Thanks for a great video
Very usefull and step by step video. Excellent!
funny, with me its the other way around, converted my orbea hydro 2010 8-speed from shifters to grip shift. like the direct shifting of the grip shift plus the front derailler can be tuned a bit with grip shifter when its ratling in lowest of highest gear on cassette on the back, so thats very personal. like your videos! very informative and you have great crative solutions
bought giant xtc jr 24 brand new, it comes with revoshift, thinking about to change it or wait until warranty period pass it.
Thank you so much for this video! You rock!
When measuring cable housing, would the same process work for folding bikes?
Good to know. The grip shifters are the bane of my existence. I have some sort of mental deficit that makes changing gears always exactly backwards and I am just dealing with a rear. Being cheap (and lazy) I'll wait until they mechanical fail to change them. They do seem to be perfect and functioning as designed for a year now....yeah, it's a mixed bag.
Very helpful for DIY ! Thanks Lot. !
I quite regularly change the grip shifter to a leaver shifter much better Perfect video thank you
This is what I need to do. Great video.
Thanks. Helped me out a lot.
Thanks that helped me out a lot
Hi Mainly on children’s bikes they seem to struggle and have problem twisting the grip shift and very often no-better when i have fitted new cables. They seem to handle the leavers much easier.
Thanks you explain everything so well 👍
I have a bike with shimano grip shifters on it so will shimano trigger shifters also work with my system
Hello. Would you know if a Suntour x1 derailleur is compatible with a Ahimane 7 speed Shifter?
Got 8speed just like yours do l need put on 8 th speed cog ? where do l put gears shifter on 8 or first ?? to adjust
RJ- I'm converting from drops to flat bar (more upright riding position) and I can't quite figure out how to set up my trigger shifter for the front derailleur. Nashbar calls it a (2/3 x 8 SPEED) so I assumed I could use it on my 2x front derailleur. The model number is SL-R758-3 but there is no real documentation. It feels like there are 4 position indexed. Any idea how to configure it for 2X?
Great video. I like how you explain everything as you go along. I have never been able to get shifters to work on the first try like that, but you obviously have a LOT more experience on this type of thing than I do. I mostly just ride my bike and take it to the shop when it needs new cables. I've never converted grip shifters to trigger, but I'd like to. I really don't like grip shifters. Trigger shifters are SO much better. Why did they ever invent twist grip shifters? Seems like something that was really not needed, but they sure are used on a lot of bikes from very inexpensive to my $4000+ recumbent.

Great video, thanks!
Great video bruv thanks!!👌👌👍👍
Thanks. I'll be doing this next week.
Excellent video learnt a lot
Hallo, i have one question. Do sram shifters work with shimano derailler?
Recently was given a Scott Speedster s40. What kind of stand is that and where could I purchase it? Great videos!
Is the shemano sl-tx50 worth picking up to replace a revo twist shift?
You are a godsend for home bike mechanics everywhere.
When I had to take the grips off I used hairspray.
Do you need to cut all the cables or is it alright to reuse them?
Great video! I also hate grip shifters so I'll do the same. Cheers!
Very helpful and professional video
Hello RJ what is the model number of the trigger shifters that are in your video I need 3 to 7
Thank you for this video. Im going to be replacing my shifters soon because the front shifter broke
does the new one works better or why convert?
Thanks man 4 sharing
Can I just leave the gear shifter cable in place the way it is, remove the grip shifter and slide on the trigger shifter and then use the same cable that's already set up inside the trigger shifter and be good to go???
Great vid always very informative , just a question? When shifting on the rear I noticed it shifted heavy and clunky on some rear gears is that a problem or a issue in your opinion ?
I can't tell you without working on the bike.
Hello RJ how are you doing my name is Oronde nice to meet you that's incredible work on installing your own shifters to your bike I have a round shifter grip on my bike and the cable to the rear part of the wheel whether the rella is is little chewed up and I can't help but to wonder how to replace the cable that leads from the grip shifter to the handlebars take the chewed-up bag cable out to replace it with a new cable so how do you go about taking the housing of the round grip shifter off the handlebars to replace the chewed-up cable with a new cable.
It varies by model. I have a bunch of videos showing how to replace the cables in different models of shifters. Look through my video list.
Can't you reuse the cable housing from the old cables?
Thank you
I have a new road bike but it has a grip shifter can you show me how to change it to a lever shifter
Great video very useful for me just wanted to know where do you get your shifters and other gear that you use in other videos
+Brandon Astley Amazon, ebay, craigslist, local bike shop, etc.
I am looking to do this conversion to my mongoose term. I really prefer trigger shifters, and am planning on using the shimano st-ef500 trigger shifters on it. My only question is, can the brake cables be reused, along with the outer casing of the shifters? I am asking this because it would be WAY easier for me to simply swap the brake cable from one brake to another, and to just feed the new shifter cable through the old cable casing (the black tubing).
If I spend the time doing all this work, I spend the few dollars on new cables and housing instead of using the old crappy worn ones. Up to you.
great video
Awesome video! :D
