Circles represent seismic stations that are constantly monitoring ground movements at a certain location. At default, they have a blue color and if any movement is detected, their color changes according to the shaking intensity from green, yellow to red and they also flash to catch attention.
==== Why is the magnitude displayed in GlobalQuake different from that of official sources? ====
GlobalQuake uses a fully automatic estimation system for earthquake parameters, which is completely independent of official sources. This means that information is sometimes provided faster, but can possibly be less accurate.
==== When will the next earthquake hit? ====
Earthquakes are unpredictable events that can occur without prior notice. It is important to understand that current scientific knowledge does not allow for precise prediction of earthquake occurrences. Individuals claiming to predict earthquakes should be approached with caution.
==== What is displayed when an earthquake is detected? ====
Detected Earthquakes are shown as a cross with 2 colored circles spreading evenly from the epicenter. The blue color represents the predicted location of so-called P-waves, which are weaker but much faster than S-waves, which are displayed as orange or red circles. If the program is unsure about the earthquake information, a "?" will be shown instead of a X at the epicenter.
Old earthquakes are displayed as smaller circles with their radius proportional to the estimated magnitude and their color depends on their depth, magnitude, or age, depending on the current settings.
If the earthquake is estimated to be strong enough that it might be felt at some location, a colored hexagonal overlay will be shown according to the estimated intensity in MMI scale. en.wikipedia.o...

★ How do I install GlobalQuake?
→ Head to the official GlobalQuake website at globalquake.ne... and follow the instructions there. All you need is to install Java version 17 or 21 and download the latest version of GlobalQuake
★ What is the quality (S, A, B, C, D)?
→ The quality expresses how confident GlobalQuake is about the earthquake it has detected. If the quality is high (S, A), then the earthquake is very likely detected at the correct location with the right depth and reasonably close magnitude. Quality of C or D likely means that the detection isn't very accurate and the actual earthquake might be at a completely different spot than GlobalQuake is showing.
★ What magnitude type is used?
→ GlobalQuake uses its own magnitude formulas that were made to best fit official readings. Therefore, the magnitude is neither mB, Mw, or anything like that. We simply call it "GlobalQuake magnitude" or Mgq.

A very strong earthquake registered by the USGS as magnitude 7.0 struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, at 19:10 UTC on August 17, 2024. The agency reports a depth of 50 km (31 miles). EMSC reports a magnitude of 7.0 at a depth of 51 km (32 miles). The epicenter was located 106.7 km (66.3 mi) east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (population 181,216), and 116.7 km (72.5 mi) east-southeast of Vilyuchinsk (population 24,204), Kamchatka , Russia. Based on preliminary earthquake parameters (magnitude 7.4), hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts within 300 km (186 mi) of the earthquake epicenter, the NWS PTWC said. Estimated times of arrival (ETA) of the initial tsunami wave for tsunami hazard locations: Petropavlovsk, Russia (53.2°N 159.6°E) at 19:45 UTC on August 17. Actual arrival times may vary, and the initial wave may not be the largest, the center said. A tsunami is a series of waves that occur at intervals of five minutes to an hour. The hazard can persist for many hours or more after the initial wave. Impacts can vary significantly along the coastline due to local bathymetry and the shape and elevation of the shoreline. Impacts can also vary depending on the state of the tide at the time of peak tsunami waves. People caught in tsunami waters could drown, be crushed by debris, or be swept out to sea. The USGS has issued a green alert for earthquake-related fatalities. The likelihood of casualties is low. A yellow alert has been issued for economic losses. Some damage is possible, and the impact is expected to be relatively localized. Estimated economic losses are less than 1 percent of Russia's GDP. Past events that have reached this alert level have required a local or regional response. Overall, the population of this region resides in earthquake-resistant structures, although there are vulnerable structures. The predominant vulnerable building types are adobe block and brick constructions not reinforced with mud. Recent earthquakes in this region have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis that could have contributed to the losses.
I was playing with my friends when I saw this earthquake being warned about on the GlobalQuake live stream. I was very scared and went straight to the Discord server to see more information.
Don't be afraid. It's part of the Earth's geologic activity. Unless you are directly in the epicenter's zone, you are unlikely to feel or sense anything.
Потрясло нас нормально, сообщают о том, что люди получили травмы, в магазинах товары послетали на пол, но конкретно у меня дома стекла не дребезжали, как в прошлый раз в апреле, хотя шкафы ходуном ходили. Многие люди в городе проснулись от тряски. Землетрясение дошло даже до континентальной части Камчатки, там толчки тоже ощущались. Ну хоть полы перестали скрипеть. Ещё и Шивелуч опять начал извергаться, я думаю, это всё между собой связано.
Я сам жив-здоров, родные и знакомые в порядке.

I'm concerned for California as well. Saw a recent story of an Oarfish surfacing, which is usually an indication of possible severe underwater disruption, as they are only found in deep sea environments. They have worrying nicknames such as: "Doomsday" and "Disaster" fish, as they seem to be more commonly spotted surfacing before natural disasters.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky mostly is protected of tsunami. Because the city is situated at the bay shore, it's closed from the ocean. Only the historical center of the city has this danger.
