I had this done yesterday. Like many of you I was dreading it and wishing they would put me under. But it was mostly a big nothing burger. Very minor discomfort and it stung when I urinated the first few times but 18 hours later no pain at all. I got to look inside at the mass in my bladder and am scheduled for surgery in 2 weeks but the cystoscopy was no big deal. Like Dr. Hyman says you can do this and you will be fine!

My first clue was blood in the urine. Not microscopic. Jan 26. I had a CAT scan a week later that revealed a 2.5cm mass. This was confirmed with the cystoscopy which didn't hurt. Just a bit uncomfortable.
Doc scheduled me for surgery March 13. I was terrified because the surgery takes the same route as the cystoscopy but with a larger instrument. Yikes!
But thanks to anesthesiology I didn't feel a thing. Just went to sleep and woke up in recovery. No pain at all.
Was supposed to be an outpatient procedure but due to excessive bleeding I stayed 3 extra days and was discharged with a catheter. That was not comfortable but I was able to sleep all night without having to get up to pee LOL!
It was removed at my followup visit last Friday. The next day I fould out I have a UTI which isn't surprising but I am on Cephalexin and it's clearing up. I almost feel normal.
I DO have cancer but doctor said it's very slow advancing and no chemo or radiation is needed. Just plenty of water and a followup every 6 months so I feel lucky as hell!
Let me know if you have any questions. I can give you my email if you like.

Thanks for your story. I'm going next week for mine. Had brachytherapy for prostate cancer 14 years ago. Having urination problems: burning and stop and go stream (no blood or back pain) so my urologist wants to do the cystoscopy.

@@whatsamattayu3257 I'm going in for my second cystoscopy Friday the 26th. I'll let you know how it goes. I was TERRIFIED of getting my first one but it was only slightly uncomfortable and well worth it. I do not fear the upcoming one at all. It was less dramatic than getting my teeth cleaned and it revealed a tumor in my bladder.
The surgery was no big deal. I was very apprehensive but I just went to sleep and felt no pain at all during or afterwards. I was supposed to go home the same day but I had excessive bleeding and ended up staying 3 nights and had to have a catheter for a week but it wasn't too bad. I'm hoping my followup next week goes well and will keep you posted here.
But don't worry about the cystoscopy!

Thanks Dr. Hyman! If the Dr can't say anything any input from anyone let me know. I went for my first consult and it was a PA and not a full doctor of Urology. He said try Tamsulosin HCL .4mg one a day to see if that helps in regard to frequent urination and some dribbling after urinating and also sometimes leaking before urinating if I really need to urninate badly. Also I urninate a lot i.e. I went 10 times in 7 hours and average having to urinate about every 45 minutes. Sometimes I urinate and 15 minutes later I have to urninate again as much as I did minutes before. I told the PA all of that and he prescribed the Tamsulosin that caused terrible ringing in my ear that always rings only the ringing was 4 times as loud and happening only an hour after the first dose. There is another drug he said I could use that begins with an "s" but forgot what it is. Is that a waste of time trying the drugs to really see what my problem is? With what I describe is it where I should request I have a cystoscopy? Just hoping for independent advice. Also should a PA really do my cystoscopy instead of a full doctor of Urology?

Watched a number of cystoscopy videos and they all talk about looking inside the bladder but they make it sound like the camera isn’t used in the urethra either going in or out. So if that’s true, how would that tell the doctor anything about my prostate?
