I'm an old guy now, but I saw ZZ Top 3 times starting back in 1973. They kicked my ass everytime! They're from Houstin, Texas! This song is normally preceded by 'Waitin For The Bus'. Check it out. I think you'll dig it!

Ya know that was and is a huge lie. It was bill ham trying to promote these guys. They only said this after he died. The statement was: you guys know what your doing. That's pretty much all Jimi ever said to them. Black people scared Billy. He struggles to this day. Bill ham made it up. Ask frank...get him off to the side and he will tell you they were awkward around Jimi and he ignored them just like he did the Monkees when he was forced into a tour with them. He was pissed the entire time. Trust me Jimi never really heard of them before the deal for the few shows they shared a bill.

The reason for all the mud references when you talk about Mississippi is because of the Delta, which stretches across from parts of East Texas to Alabama, is known for its mud. The mud is extremely fertile, especially because of all of the dirt and minerals that come from the headwaters of the Mississippi River (Lake Itasca, Minnesota) through the Midwest and into the Mississippi Delta, which feeds the coastal plains of the South, as well as the Gulf boundaries of Louisiana, and the bayous of southeastern Texas, namely the Houston area. The Mississippi Delta is where the cotton fields and sugar cane was predominantly grown, and unfortunately so was the nexus of the slave trade in the US. Because of the large number of black Americans, blues came from the Mississippi Delta, and ended up traveling up the Mississippi River to Chicago, where it took on another life.
Mississippi is the birthplace of the blues, thanks to the black musicians that created music with western instruments and slave spirituals, creating one of the two major music traditions formed in the US (blues and jazz). Mississippi is where the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil to learn how to play came from, but the sheer number of influential black musicians that came from the Delta region, stretching across 4 states, is astonishing. Blind Willie Johnson, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, Ledbelly... Just too damn many to keep naming. We were extremely fortunate that Alan Lomax was able to record a lot of the early greats before they were lost to history. "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is one of ZZ Top's tributes to the great influences of blues.

That little ol' Band from Texas. And wow you were almost on the meaning of this song!! i was shocked!! the story goes....In the old days they could only get the Blues in south Texas late at night from an old Mexican radio station across the border, This is where they heard the old Blues tunes.... So when a big Radio station out of Chicago picked up a nightly Blues show, it started getting picked up on some nightly AM stations across the US and finally down into Texas. The Music they so craved was finally making it's way across the nation, and Muddy Waters tunes blew them away! They were hooked! grew up and put a south Texas rock spin on it! Once they all got together they just had to figure out a band name..... That became a cool play on one of their favorite Blues guitarists name.... They couldn't have King in their name...... And they also couldn't have BB in their name.... So they became ZZ Top! As for some good Bluesy ZZ Top.... I would recommend Watching "Brown Sugar" Live from Gruene hall. And also Give Blue Jean Blues a spin! I enjoy your reactions my friend! Thank You!!

In this particular reference, the "muddy water" he refers to is the Mississippi River. It is known for being very muddy by the time it makes it down to N'awlins. The muddy water of the Mississippi is a common topic in old blues music, as it passed thru major blues hubs.

Muddy Waters is the famous blues player from Mississippi. Billy Gibbons says his record "Electric Mud" was a big influence. It's also a quintessential album because it used electric guitars in blues. Just a step to Rock and Roll. The later 60's Jeffe Beck, Eric Clapton, Jim Page etc. style that lead to tBlack Sabbath and metal.

The reason why mud is associated with Mississippi is mainly because of two reasons. 1) The Mississippi River constantly swells and recedes; therefore the river tends to be very muddy. 2) Mississippi is one of the states that constantly floods multiple times every year; thus it is usually very muddy.

Known as that Little ol' Band from Texas. The lyrics "muddy waters turned to wine" just refers to the fact that Jesus did it at the wedding in the bible. They are definitely the epitome of Texas Blues. La Grange, Mexican Blackbird, and even Doubleback used in Back to the Future III off of the Recycler album shows that.

I was lucky enough to see them live several times, starting from the mid 70s. I much prefer their early sound, which was very blues oriented. Fandango is a great album to try

Mississippi mud is different. I honestly can’t say why but I worked over there for a minute and live in Louisiana. Different mud. It’s weird.

It's not MIssissippi the state so much as Mississippi the river that's referred to as muddy. Great band, great song, great reaction.

The muddy waters of the Ole Mississippi River that runs through the state of Mississippi is the reason for the reference of mud.

The song is cool but the notes are very light. His approach to the pentatonic scale is basic. He could do so much more but they were entering a world they knew nothing of. Tgey call these cheat notes. Like piwer bar chords in the 70s and 80s. A easy guide to sound like a style of music ya dont understand. SRV and Jimmy vaughn were playing it the eay it was introduced. No cheat chords

a lot of these guys radio played songs don't come close to showing their talent. . silly side note, they were always known for their beards and their drummer, clean shaven by comparison makes up for his heathenness, rofl, lack of facial hair with his last name, Frank Lee Beard

Just stick to their 70s stuff. Eliminator, Regurgitator, etc from the 80s and beyond are just a parody of their former selves. After Deguello, it has been no bueno.
