  • Week two of our Fall Overlanding trip took us to Padre Island Texas. If you haven't been, You gotta put Padre Island on you list of Overlanding destinations. It is truly beautiful. We left Overland Expo East and drove down to Corpus Christi and then made our way out to the island. Overlanding on the beach has its own set of unique challenges. The wind, sun, sand and salt water mist all add to the beauty but you need to plan for them as well. We were so blessed to spend a week at a very secluded site. We saw very few people and the escape from civilization brought us amazing sunrises, peaceful days, and quiet nights. We will be going back again... Soon we hope.

This my backyard! Words of advice for those intending to go.
    1. Have 4wd or AWD if you plan on going past the 5 mile marker. The beach is 60 miles long and unmaintained. There will be debris on the beach. I've seen everything imaginable, from plastic drum to boats to 60 foot trees. Also check the tides BEFORE going. Some areas are unpassable at high tide, so have a plan.
    2. There is no cell phone service. Make sure you take everything you think you might need. Check the tides and weather BEFORE you go.
    3. During the summer months there is more traffic, especially up to the 10 mile marker. So if you want seclusion you will need to travel farther. Which brings us to fuel, fill up your tank at the last gas station on Padre Island. Soft sand and 4wd will burn up your fuel.
Lastly, be safe, watch for turtles and other wildlife. Bring an extra garbage bag and take out more than you bring. Remember the beach is completely unmaintained. One important note, northbound traffic ALWAYS HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY. You never know when someone may have an emergency and needs to get off the beach. Remember NO cell phone service.
If you follow these simple rules, you will have an awesome time and be prepared for anything unexpected.
Hurry down and enjoy this beautiful national treasure.

Thank you for sharing your adventures. I’m from Corpus and my husband and I once lived and breathed our coast, especially PINS. Just be careful at night because of the Coyotes. If you have a dog, keep it close. Also, jellyfish (Manowar) that have a vicious sting. The waters are usually clear and turquoise in in color during Summer months. There are also Rip Currents that are dangerous for anyone, even good swimmers. Always swim parallel to the beach if you get caught in one. Do not swim straight to shore. You’ll get tired and drown. Sharks run close to shore but are skittish. Fishing is amazing. All waters can be dangerous, but if you stay aware, you’ll have the best time. PINS is our Gem. Have fun!!! Welcome to Texas. 😎🤓🚣🏻‍♀️🏄🏻‍♀️🤠🦈

How far down did you go? Past the 5 mile marker for sure. For those that are unfamiliar with PINS, fill your tank before going, when your tank gets to half tank that's as far as you go unless you have spare tanks. Many folks have gotten stuck 50+ miles down because they don't consider the fuel needed to get back.
