it really depends how far gone the car being restored is and how much work needs to be put in. but you can make money on restorations. the thing about Jay though is that he isnt trying to sell the cars. he just wants them done right. so it costs what it costs

What a beauty. I live in Indy. About 12 years ago I, with a small crew, retrofitted two Stutz buildings. We put in copper wiring for computers along with fiber optics. The buildings are historical landmarks,so maintaining it's integrity made for interesting challenges. The buildings are beautiful, ornate fixtures along with handcrafted masonry work. I found papers and old cans while crawling around the under belly in the attempt to hide wire, conduit etc. It's just a really cool place to have in our city. Located a few miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it's a great memory that I got to experience.

Before Stutz closed its doors in 1935, the marque had many racing successes including a second place at Le Mans and a 24 hour land speed record. Stutz invented the "underslung" chassis which greatly improved the handling and safety of automobiles. The Stutz plant still stands in Indianapolis and is presently an art and business mart located near downtown. Along with Duesenberg and Marmon, Stutz is proudly hailed as a prime example of early auto development and manufacture in Indianapolis.

One thing people don't consider all to often, is that in that time, the road network was not designed for people to be leisurely cruising along at 62 mph all day. That was a truly fast speed back then, not just relatively, especially considering the lack of consideration in safety, 80 would have been deadly fast for most stretches.

This episode evoked memories of Chasing Classic Cars, Wayne Carini's barn find of a '21 Stutz in Georgia. I remember reading about AK Miller in the New York Times, when the government was auctioning the contents of his farm. He loved the Stutz and a number of them on his property. The sum of $260.00 was the price of the Model T at the end of its run in 1926. In 1918 it was higher - no big deal ! I can't express how much I look forward to Jay Garage every week, and they keep getting better ! Thank you Jay !

As someone unfamiliar with the world of classics, I spent well over an hour watching this 20 minute video, googling all the stuff he was talking about. So fascinating hearing these details about the car, owner, designer... so many interesting cars details .... like temperature gauge as an emblem on top of the radiator. The hand cranked fuel pump.. the different materials used in different parts of the engine... each designer was so different in their approach to making cars since there were no established practices .. true pioneers... Its priceless the information Jay Leno is sharing with us. Cant thank you and your team enough.
If there was a chronological playlist so i could watch the evolution of cars... That would be perfect.

My dad just died from cancer October 11, 2016. I inherited all of his antique cars, 13 restored. I helped restore seven of them with with my dad, the latest is a 1913 model T about 90% finished at least my dad got to drive it around one summer before he past. The 1926 Willys Overland Whippet has never been touched, all original still has the original tires that came on it. My dad traded a cider mill for it when he was 14 years old, the interior is pretty much mint. Seven years ago I found a 1930 Dodge in a partial fallen in barn, that we bough, it has never been touched, there is two things that need to be fixed, a spot on the drivers side step up and a couple of worn spots on the drivers seat other than that the car is mint and the back seat doesn't even look like it was used. I have two cars of my own a 1930 Ford Model A Roadster and a 1931 model A pickup that was given to me when I was 12 for mowing the lawn for and elderly neighbor. I mowed her lawn for two years and I knew she didn't have much money, she kept saying she will pay me somehow. I finally asked her how much she wanted for the model a truck in the back yard, she asked what I want that old piece of junk for, I told her my dad and I restore them she said if I could get it out of there I could have it. I rode my bike back got a couple of 6 volt batteries, some gasket material, a piece of sand paper, hand pump and some gas loaded them into my wagon and headed back. About 45 minutes to an hour and I had it running but the tire were to rotted they all blew but one so I went home till my dad got home from work. We found two sets of old ford rims and tires he took me over and helped me put them on and I drove it home with dad following. After restoring it in 1978 I have used and drove that truck so much I have had to rebuild the engine twice since the restore, it is due for a new paint job after 39 years. Sorry it's so long, just sharing some of the great times I had with my dad, restoring the beauties. If you have the patients and time, you can restore some of these cars fairly cheap, picking up parts at lawn sales trade shows flea markets and things like that. That's what we did a couple of them took up to 6 or 7 years to finish.

It is just fascinating to hear Jay talk about his gems, would listen to him for hours straight - totally makes you forget everything else. Jay also gives hope, that old cars and restoring them as an art form is not dead yet, the purpose of saving the history and literally teaching newer generations what the life and cars were before them is more valuable than the actual $ cost per one restored car. Too much I see people who get decent amount of $ and buy some new-school-high-cost-vehicle, that they actually know nothing about, just to prove something to somebody, mainly just showing off for people who know even less. Why should I drive a brand new 911 Turbo or R8? What does it give to me? Who actually cares? What will happen to these cars in 20+ yrs? Just why? Would take some old vehicle instead of these new ones all day long. Sadly though my pockets are empty and besides building something old for myself, I just have to pass these ads sadly and relieve the pain by watching passionate Jay. Few weeks ago I had to pass a decent 66' Isuzu Bellett offer for peanuts, because I just do not have any resources to put it back on the road and sadly see it go to someone else. Anyway take care Jay !

I forgot to ask how would you get the information to complete a restoration such as this. I mean, all the details and accents the paint color right down to the engine specifications its so detail oriented so perfectly clean so well put together.. how would the car have looked brand new I wonder? I think automotive history is one of my favorite subjects to study and to drive or own the car that made history is even more exciting.
