Most of the time privileges come with accompanying responsibilities. It’s worth considering the consequences of what you’re saying you want. If Puerto Rico really does want to have full voting rights and representation, they need to become a state and take on all the responsibilities that, that entails.

    As an Irish person, that statement made by PMI at 26:32 sounds a lot like the phrasing of some of our old Brehon laws, the national system of laws that Ireland used for centuries before we were colonised by England in 1167. For example, Ireland had the first copyright law that we know of. It was written "as to every cow its calf, to every book its copy".
    So yeah it might have been an attempt to bastardise our ancestors' culture, which honestly feels about right for PMI

    • @TheREALJosephTurner
      @TheREALJosephTurner Před 23 dny +4

      @@Spearca That's the whole idea of Senators- it's not supposed to be a representation of the population number. To help this make sense, Wyoming is our least populous state with a little over half a million people, while California is our most populous state with a little over 39 million people. Math it out, and Cali has 38.5 million MORE people than Wyoming - yet each state only has two Senators. Now, if you compare Wyoming's population with American Samoa's 43.5 thousand people, Wyoming has a bit more than half a million more people than American Samoa. The population difference for California & Wyoming is around 72 TIMES GREATER than the population difference between Wyoming & American Samoa. So if Wyoming has the same number of Senators as California, there is no reason American Samoa shouldn't have the same number of Senators as Wyoming- that number, by design, being exactly two.

The men who originally wrote that compromise into the Constitution did not anticipate that the disparity between large and small states would ever get so large. Omg, as a KC girl that moved to Northern Appalachia, I do have to admit I confuse the fuck outta the locals when I read them for filth for having NO character and then bounce away with a “Toodles, never contact me again!”😂😂😂
    Missouri Show Me energy is a real one. The racists or assholes using it as a veiled threat is why Missouri was a swing state in the civil war, with literal brother against brother on the human rights issue.
    My mom shipped me outta the state during the 2nd GW Bush administration. My liberal friends there don’t really feel safe, especially since MAGA.

    The dude that wrote that law wouldnt be able to comprehend our rules or regulations cause we are so far in the future. By his own definition, he'd kinda fit the "alien culture that cant comprehend our laws" description and therefore, his words should no longer hold weight in court.

      Fun fact, Washington D.C. has a higher population than both Wyoming and Vermont? Maybe we shouldn't count them as states then if there's so few people there.
      Edit: Puerto Rico has a higher population than 20 US states. What makes even makes a State a State?

    • @Spearca
      @Spearca Před 22 dny

      @@katalina256 Residents of a territory can vote to apply for statehood. Congress can pass an act "enabling" them to write a state constitution, then vote again to admit the new state. President signs off.
      DC and Puerto Rico have made applications. The act for DC passed the House but not the Senate. The act for PR hasn't been voted on.

    This is only part of the story, I'd love to hear John talk about the US Maritime Act of 1920, and how it affected the economies of these territories. Are Hawaii and Alaska except from it? and when and for how long the US Congress has had to exempt some territories from its requirements. This is a very old argument yet no one cares about it except the citizens of these territories.
