In Gabon, French photographers Anne-Marie, Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE and their friend Michel GUISS DJOMOU installed six large mirrors (1,2 m x 2,5 m) in the jungle near Nyonié. In order to film the reaction of wild animals from different angles as they encounter their reflection, the group also installed cameras equipped with motion detectors in front of each mirror.
Members of a gorilla family from this jungle come and go as they please in front of these mirrors. Just as in humans, self recognition in primates is not an innate ability. The ability to recognise one’s own reflection is the result of a training process that little by little allows the human, or primate to understand the mirror’s properties:
The case of the babies, children, adolescents and mothers of this family:
In the mirror each of these gorillas sees the reflections of its family members by its side, but it is also faced with one gorilla it has never seen before: its own reflection. Each gorilla attempts to get to known this never before seen gorilla who copies its every movement. As the gorilla approches the stranger, the stranger approches as well, when the gorilla tries to touch this newcomer, the newcomer also reaches out its hand but its fingers are met with a cold, flat surface rather than the warm touch the gorilla was expecting. When the gorilla tries to press its lips against the stranger or lick its face the result is the same, once again the gorilla encounters this cold, hard surface. Some of the gorillas reach behind the mirror in an attempt to touch the stranger without coming in contact with this flat surface. The mirror training progresses and some of the gorillas, upon seeing the image of a family member enter into the mirror turn around to verify that this family member is actually behind them. One young gorilla even uses the mirror to examine his anus, a part of his body that he is unable to see without the help of the mirror. If over time this sort of self examination continues and this young gorilla uses the mirror to explore other parts of his body such as the inside of his mouth we will then be sure that he has achieved the ability of self recognition in the mirror.
The case of the head of the family, the silverback:
As far as the silverback is concerned this intruder, (his own reflection), has come into his territory in order to steal his females (wives). Being a non violent primate this silverback does not wish to trigger a direct confrontation and therefore he avoids looking at this intruder directly in the eyes which is seen as an act of defiance between two silverbacks. He tries instead to frighten his rival by standing up on two legs to demonstrate the importance of his size or to show his force as slapping with fists or with cupped hands the ground loudly and repeatedly in front of the mirror. Seeing as the silverback does not want to look at his reflection in the mirror (avoid looking at it), his mirror training could very well be compromised unless, one of his family members, upon finishing its own mirror training and achieving the ability to self recognise decides to help him. (Translation Robin Alcorn)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLUS i would say that for gorilla direct look is avoided because in their communication it's a sign of confrontation, so it's an other point to consider why he is not recognising himself. If the placement of mirrors in the rainforest may seem sadistic when looking at the images of the reactions of this silverback due to the fact that in gorilla silverbacks looking straight into each other's eyes is a sign of mistrust (eye’s contact in silverback gorillas = fight), behavior totally different among blackback gorillas, I break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this remote area of the rain forest.
They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe, born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a large mirror!

Faced with the image of a silverback gorilla he has never seen before (his own reflection), having penetrated his domain to steal some of his females, his only goal is to scare this intruder out of his domain. Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates (only between two silverbacks), he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. In bipedal position to show his corpulence, by raising a cloud of dust, by lateral charges and very powerful and loud slaps on the ground, he tries to intimidate and push away this reflection which, strangely, adopts the same attitudes as his own. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror.
*While mirror training can be successful in some blackback gorillas (females, adolescents and children),* after a long practice in mirror in laboratory, it is *compromised among silverback gorillas* where looking another silverback gorilla, or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid.

Perfectly! In animals as in Great Apes (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos and Orangutans) as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.
In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection.
In the dominant male gorilla, this learning is much more difficult because :
      - he's not helped by his parents
      - it does not receive explanations about the reflective properties of the mirror
      - he hasn't been exposed to mirrors since he was a kid.
Head of a family of a dozen members, females and children, this silverback must protect it.
Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, he has only the idea. *Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight between two silberback gorillas (not between blackback gorillas)* , he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. *In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection. Among gorillas, in the insecurity of the jungle learning at the same time as their parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.*
The silverback is the colour of the fur on the back of the chief of a gorilla family of a dozen members (his females and offspring)
*_Case of a silverback gorilla:_* Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, his only goal is to scare this intruder out of his domain.
*_Case of a female gorilla_* In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female for her husband, the silverback (harem chief). Such are the male/female relationships in gorillas. So she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection, looking her reflection straight in the eye and so, do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection.
*_Case of gorilla babies_* In front of a mirror they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of their own moves. They are very inquisitive exactly like in humans.
To learn more about these wildlife encounters with giant mirrors installed in the jungle in Gabon, after watching, read the accompanying description of each of my 170 videos published on my CZcams channel czcams.com/users/XHB06400CANNESvideos

@@XHB06400CANNES idk, even if I never saw a mirror before in my life I couldn't imagine not quickly deducing that it's a reflection I'm looking at, After all I'd still know what my arms, legs and whatever I wore that day looked like. I'd probably be weirded out at first but I'd quickly become fascinated.

To the people saying he's a coward.
Let me tell you a secret. Gorillas are vegetarian pacifists that avoid conflict whenever they can, they ultimately resort to intimidation rather than physical conflict. In the gorilla kingdom, a male will never resort to violence against another male if he has more options available. But that isn't to say they are weak. They are the strongest apes in nature, and have a bite force stronger than a grizzly bear's. They can, and will use their size and strength in battle if necessary. But gorillas have a concept of not wasting their energy on attacking something that is weaker than they are, which gives them more of a moral pass than most humans

      *I fully agree*
*In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his harem, this silverback, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, shows his large build, his strength with **_heavy loudly slaps with cupped hands_** on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because he want to prove his power and thus scare the invader and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.*
As in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is also the result of learning to look in the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. *While mirror training can be successful in some blackback gorillas (females, adolescents and children),* after a long practice in mirror in laboratory as in wild, it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking *another silverback* , or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid. *After many years of encountering these mirrors, this silverback has still not learned that a silverback reflection does not present the slightest danger for him.*
In my description attached to this video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. *He is simply a great ape very close to man who wants to peacefully repel a rival who has entered his domain. In my description attached to my video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas. This silverback gorilla looks at the opposite side of the mirror so as not to challenge the silverback gorilla (its reflection) in the mirror because direct eye contact between two silverback (not among blackback gorillas) means aggression and fighting. So he's trying to avoid a fight.*

Faced with the image of a silverback gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, he has only the idea of making him run away by scaring him. *Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates,* he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. He don't hate the ground but this intruder in the mirror.
As he is a quadruped, his hands and his feet are covered with horn. And finally if, he smacks on the ground with cupped hands (open hands) or with his feet flat and slap on sandy ground then he does't hurt himself. These slaps on the ground must be very loudly because he wants to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (their own image) and push him to escape.
