This is my all-time FAVORITE production of this story. Mark Strong was the most believable Mr. Knightley, in my opinion, with a flawless performance, blending affection for, frustration with, and, often awkwardness around Emma. He made his struggle regarding his feelings for her palpable so that his final declaration comes as a huge relief. Kate Beckinsale was perfectly cast as Emma. I nearly lost it when she suddenly sat up in bed and said, "Oh, Lord. Harriet!" Love, love, LOVE this version.
Yes, the cast is convincing, very convincing. You are a true fan of it! Wonderful!!!!!
After I saw Mark Strong in the Kings Service movie I knew he seemed familiar, it was this Emma that I first saw him. Have you seen Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day? Mark Strong with another look, still great.
Absolutely the best version ❤❤❤❤
I hated this version when I first saw it. It's still my least favourite, but it's grown on me over time and I rewatch it at about the same rate as the other four Emma adaptations that I know about. I am starting to get fond of it.
Sometimes one have to give things simply time! @@imasinnerimasaint
This is the youngest actress I have seen play Emma. SUCH a great casting choice. She is a headstrong, spoiled youngster, not an overbearing socialite. Mr. Knightley is a thoughtful, concerned adult. Emma's father isn't a caricature. Someone has actually READ the book. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for comment. I had not read the book for so many years. I think I will enjoy it more now after reading your response. (I loved Kate B. in the story re the book "Love in the time of Cholera."
Indeed. I think this version and interpretation and its realization are exemplary. Thx.
@@user-gb1pj5ns2x Yes, we all change in time - and reading books, playing music pieces over time - is an everlasting source of new inspiration - because we always and constantly change - so our thoughts and feelings if we are open for change.
I haven't watched any of the movie adaptions yet, but having read the book, I have to say Emma's father was very much written as a caricature by Jane Austen.
Having said that though, I am curious to check this adaption out, if it is a faithful as you say. Kate Beckinsale seems a better choice to me than Gwyneth Paltrow.
@@thegreatestmels5391 Tellme, pls. how you found it! Thx.
Love Mark Strong in everything he's done! And here he even has hair! So young!
I am loving all these Jane Austin movies. So old fashioned and good manners. Thank you
Thank you very much!
I say the exact same thing!
No adaption ever succeeds in capturing the book, but this film did a good job, well cast, and good performances by all..
Far the best version made off, Mark Strong was perfectly casted and Kate Beck. too, as well all others! Very believable and and well acted by all the cast!!!
Very very true. Thx. Enjoy.
Best version of EMMA ! Fabulous casting, and the chemistry between Kate and Mark was perfect. Great score, film locations, et all.
I think so, too - well Ang Lee´s version was also good - think with Emma Thomson?
@@bastianleejones Emma Thompson’s adaptation is not Emma but Sense and Sensibility
Not really
I am staggered... I love everything about this except the Strong/Beckinsale casting. There is zero chemistry between the two. They are both fine actors, but that is all.....
This is the best presentation of the book I’ve seen with the acting completely on point, flawless, I think, without slipping into the usual failure of caricature. Thank you 🙏
Always interesting how different people perceive differently! Thx. Regards.
ive seen the other 1996 (with gwyneth paltrow), the 2009 version and the recent one, i thought nothing could come closer the 2009 one, but this was soooo good it'll stand top1 with it. absolutely delightful! glad i stumbled upon it here
Great! So please continue to enjoy! Regards.
Don't forget Prunella Scales in this version. She also narrated the book and it IS the best audiobook version.
Oh - great advice with the audiobook! Thank you!!!!
Agree, Prunella is perfectly cast...rest too
She's the only Miss Bates who talks enough. She brings pathos and comedy at once
Also my favorite version of emma
LOVE this version!!! Thank you!
Very welcome!
Kate Beckinsdale is always beautiful and wonderful in period pieces and Mark Strong is still very handsome in 2023 minus the hair. Wonderful actors both. ❤❤
Very true. Interesting to read about different tastes and preferences about this production.
He looked much better in the King's series, without this dodgy hair style
Best version of Emma by far.
Yes, I think so , too! Thank you. Enjoy!
Huge quantities of detail in the book necessarily lost for this wonderful film version. My goodness, what a beautiful incarnation of old England.
@@user-tr5je2um7h yes, we have to endure the alterations and Limits of each movie while enjoying them as well!
Emma is my favorite Jane Austen movie of all of her novels and this one was simply LOVELY 📖🎩👒🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Thanks for sharing! ❤
Really? I prefer Mansfield Park , Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice and Northangar Abbey to Emma. Thx.
I agree. Emma is my favorite Jane Austen story followed by Pride and Prejudice. I also like the 2009 production with Ramola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller. It was a great adaptation and it was in episodes so they included more of the story! Love it!
@@bastianleejones Interesting comment. The novels you cited have more social or political references woven into the story, class inequalities, slavery and social injustice, virtue versus vice, a life of the mind versus idleness and frivolity... "Emma" exists in its own little bubble in space and time.
Haha - indeed - it´s an EMMA bubble!!!!! @@c.a.savage5689
mark strong is such a handsome man back then and today
So you are a fan!
Always!!
This movie was my introduction to Emma. I tried to read the novel a few years before watching this movie but lost interest before the third chapter. Once I had watched this movie, I became interested in the novel and read it several times over. From that point on, I can imagine Emma only with Kate B.'s features: a tall brunette with the "true hazel eye". I believe I watched all the other versions of Emma (series, movies, Netflix...) and there is good in all of them, including the '72 TV series. My favourite Mr. Woodhouse is Donald Eccles. Besides this one, all of my favourites are in this 1996 TV movie. I simply love Prunella Scales as Miss Bates, and Samantha Morton is endearing as Harriet Smith!
Great! Usually the adaptions are a disappointment.
Absolutely the BEST version! Delighted, many thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this video. I have been trying to find this version for ages. It is my favorite out of at least four versions that I've seen. It's the first thing I saw either Kate Beckinsale or Mark Strong in. Their portrayals and those of others in this version just seem more genuine to me than those in other versions.
Great to hear. THANK YOU!!! Really, you had been searching for that version for such a long time. Your perserverance pays out now. Enjoy!!!!!
@@bastianleejones I searched for it on Netflix, Hulu, PBS (which is where I think I originally saw it), and even previously on CZcams but either got no results from a search or a message that it was not available for streaming. So, yes, I am enjoying this. 👍
Wonderful! Please have a look on the other Jane Austen Adaptions I uploaded - I personally love PERSUASION NORTHANGAR ABBEY and MANSFIELD PARK very much! @@jj-1936

It’s my favorite version of it ❤
Very welcome! Thx.
Thanks for uploading this version of Emma, though Mr Knightly's confession is a bit creepy, it's one of my favourite movies!
The creepy feeling - very true - I also feel regularly a bit irritated while enjoying it at the same time!
Not creepy, he is just relaying a memory.
@@bastianleejones When you remember that people rarely lived past their 50s in the Georgian Era and women were lucky to reach 40, you *have* to throw away the modern notion that people under 18 are children.
Poor children were working as soon as 7 or 8 and some even younger, Middle class girls were looking for the security of marriage from 14 up (and were considered rather elderly for marriage by 27) because an advantageous marriage was for many the only way to avoid poverty unless they had rich relations on whom they could depend. The alternatives for a woman in Georgian society would most likely cost them their good name and respectability
For a rich young woman like Emma, she was in a unique position, as she was an heiress in her own right and it would actually be to her disadvantage to marry as all she owned would become her husbands property. She is unable to properly relate to the awkward financial/Social positions of those around her because she doesnt realise what a desperate struggle it is for everyone else around her to enjoy the security and ease she takes so much for granted without another thought. Eventually she realises that even she herself is only really secure if she marries a reliable man who has no need to chase her personal fortune, so if she marries at all. there is only really Mr Knightley
@@paulaneary7877 I agree. It is shocking to our 21st century minds, but totally in keeping with the almost familial bonds of 19th century life, when neighbors were often part of daily life. Knightley has no romantic designs on Emma when he says it.
Thanks again for posting this.
It’s the best! ❤
i use to hate emma, never wanted to watch or read the book after seeing G.P's version but this one had made me fall inlove with the story, so much so to the point of reading the book, something i never wished for
Wonderful and congratulations to the movie malers. I would say in your case: Mission accomplished.
The newest version with Bill Nighy is unique and good
Emma is my favourite of Jane Austin's books. I think it is because the character of Emma is quite modern, in the sense that we can recognise aspects of her character in ourselves or friends. Some of Jane's other heroines, whilst very virtuous, are less relatable. The book is fascinating because we realise how self aware Emma is of her flaws and at times very uncomfortable about them. Then at other times completely oblivious. This doesn't always come across in the adaptations. In some adaptations you are lead to believe she just thinks she's always right. My favourite part of the book is a section not shown in this particular adaption (but is in some of the others) where she is waiting for an invite to an evening engagement to arrive, so that she can turn it down. Her thought processes whilst she's waiting always make me smile.
Very good remarks! Thx. @@andreathompson7896
Such a charming film
It is indeed! Love it. Thank you.
Not gonna lie - the “I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old” right before they kiss is very creepy (like in general the age difference is weird but then it’s shoved in your face right before they kiss) so so so strange
yeah - it leaves everybody behind with a little question mark ...
Not that big of a deal. My dad was 10 years older than my mom so tchnically he could have held her as a baby, and he was 10 or 11, though it did not happen that way. Mr.Knightly is just relaying a memory and possibly they are both enjoying the fact that they have been a part of eachother's lives all this time and are amazed and gladdened that it has turned out that their feelings have blossomed into a romantic situation. It is NOT like he has incestuous feelings at all and it doesn't come across that way. Minds out of the gutter please.
You must try to understand that this idea that an older man and a younger woman means _de facto_ the man is creepy and controlling is simply a modern feminist construct. Until this modern feminist nonsense it was common for a man to be older, not unusual at all. It was also not a reflection on him as some kind of misogynist. To understand this, you don't need to turn only to statistics, If you watch old movies and there is some mention of age somewhere you will see how utterly normal it was. An example is Service for Ladies staring Leslie Howard. When the woman is introduced we understand she is 20. Later in the film, the Leslie Howard character writes his details down on a hotel register. He writes 35.
Let this be a lesson in how these modern feminists have re-written the past so it supports their narrative. They have also manipulated people's minds so instead of seeing the older man as desirable, he is seen as perv^rted. Therefore, instead of seeing this as a beautiful romance women get sickened. It is mind manipulation and it is happening everywhere. For example, The modern Netflix Rebecca is awful. Many WOKE controlled programmes are not altered for reasons of the creativity of the piece, but because they want political control. In Rebecca Maxim de Winter is supposed to be 41 and the girl about 19. They have cast actors that look the same age. It gets worse. The girl goes out with Maxim and instead of conversation they have s^x on a public beach. This is not only highly unlikely at the time the piece is set, it is completely wrong for the entire storyline. I don't know if you are familiar with either the book or the wonderful film staring Sir Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine? He falls in love with her because she is innocent and wholesome - the very antithesis of Rebecca. The entire plotline depends on this and the feminist Netflix production totally destroys it. feminists have warped ideas about marriage. They think you need to try the person out se^ually or how could you marry them? The divorce statistics with s^xual problems being one of the highest reasons given for the divorce doesn't exactly back them up.
Frankly, if you want to feel sick about something, be creeped out by how successful WOKE feminists have been in manipulating public opinion.
Oh, and watch the Olivier/Fontaine Rebecca. It is a wonderful film.
Me, too!
A 10 year age difference isn't weird in a historical setting, or even a modern one. Without birth control, a man might have to support 6-10 children, which tends to promote later marriages. He has to be settled enough in his profession that he is earning well, or if inheriting, he'll be older because he doesn't inherit until his father or uncle passes. Holding her as a baby is just a reflection on the close ties of affection between the two families.
Love this version, excellent! Thanks for sharing!❤
Thank you very much. it is a gem. Enjoy.
Splendid! Emma who thinks she knows all yet in the end is the one who is Clueless 😂

Great! Thank you!
This is the first adaptation of Emma I ever saw and it's still my favourite. Thanks for making it available.
Great to hear. Very welcome. Enjoy. Thx.
Okay, I watched the entire Movie and now I see that I'm going to have to read Ms. Austen's vision and then watch it again 😊
I've never given much thought to this Story. I see there are quite a few adaptations of it, but I just didn't bother until recently when I saw a few Clips of this version.
I've read mixed reviews about "Emma" in the Comments Section of other Austen 📚 works. There were die-hard "Emma" fans and others that didn't connect to the characters at all. I need to read the Book and then watch at least one more production of it before I know for sure if it'll be one of my favorites or not.
It was refreshing to watch a Jane Austen adaptation of the Novel I knew absolutely nothing about. No names, No plot, No summary ~ a first time experience☺️
I believe Jane Austen herself said she didn't expect anyone to like the character Emma except herself. People at the time were used to the perfect heroine with no faults. 😄
@@sunnygem21 Not being able to understand the "heroin" through the eyes of the writer leaves so many blind spots to totally misinterpret who she is to the other characters 🎭 and how she truly sees herself. I usually give any Movie 30 minutes to catch my attention, but only 15 for the main character.
Emma quickly caught my attention‼️I didn't care for her at all, which confused me. We always love 💕 Ms. Austen's Heroines. What was I overlooking?
"Marianne" in S&S wasn't the "Heroin" of course, but even though she had her moments of insensitivity, we never disliked her. Elinor ~ the rock & anchor wasn't ever a doormat. We understood why Elinor was who she was.
But Emma ~ I didn't "forgive" Emma until the final 15 minutes and it was only from seeing her through Mr. Knightly 🎩eyes❣️
No doubt about it "Sunnygem21", I've
got to read the 📖 Book😊
It is refreshing seeing a movie adaption first before eading the novel. But the risk of disappointment or of big surprise must alwys be taken in either way.
I have to disagree. The new one is so good!!! The chemistry is tormenting!
No ! Sorry, I don't like Kate Beckinsale as a very plain, very boringly played, very wooden Emma. I like Mark Strong except for, possibly, the worst Screen Kiss at the proposal.🫣 It made me cringe😂 I much prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow Film
Overall, my least favourite version of this Film/ Book,
this is such an amazing version of Emma; I think it's now my new favourite actually. SHE'S JUST SO MESSY!!! Is Mr. Knightley the same guy who played Merlin in Kingsman? Amazing. Such a handsome man

So very delightful. It was good casting all around. The characters played their parts perfectly. The settings, scenes, and photography could have been more rich and colorful, it was done in shades of beige. A lack of color but otherwise quite perfect.
yes the colourgrading was specific. Thx. Enjoy!
An astute observation. But they are in the English countryside, not Versailles! I'm sure the costumes and colour schemes were researched in advance. Cheers!
This is easily the most faithful adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma I've ever seen. The only thing I can take exception with is the muddling of social levels at the end. It wasn't part of the book, nor would Mr Knightly approve of it.

Wow! This moves fast! 17 minutes in and we’ve already experienced BOTH the Weston wedding AND Harriet Smith refusing Robert Martin! I’ll keep watching because I love this story and all the reviews are ravingly in favor of it, but I sure hope it slows down some.
(Maybe I’m just comparing it too much to the miniseries wherein they had several episodes to expound upon some of these things.)
Enjoy watching!
Update:
Yeah, not my favorite. Talented performances, but everything felt so abbreviated! No scene was allowed to develop the depth it should have and it flitted through the story so quickly that it just felt very “spark notes-y.” Dialogue was very expositional. I just feel like this version displayed the facts about the story without any of the humor or heart.
I thought the actors did a good job; I’ve just got beef with the writing.

I've only recently got round to watching this version of Emma and now I think it's my favourite! I love the music and cinematography, the views of the countryside. All the actors do a great job, particularly Raymond Coulthard who makes for an utterly smarmy & repugnant Frank Churchill! My only complaints would be that the costumes are a little drab and that Mr Knightley comes across a tad too stern and paternalistic. Other than that, it's a very enjoyable watch! Loved this version but actually didn't think Emma and Knightly really seemed in love. They lacked connection.
In a way, yes.
Marriage is about property and security in the Georgian Era...Love doesnt come into it, only eligibility
I differ. The concept of love itself varies from person to person.
I'm deep into the type of love where you have the deepest friendship, yet not good enough to show or sometimes even oblivious of your own feelings.
Mark Strong's eyes always talked louder than his words... I'm totally whipped because I am into this.

I like this version except for one thing....the line at the end when he talked about holding her as a child....
He could have been 10 years ol or younger. That would not be weird. Both children
In the book he is about 17 when she is born. So yes, the age difference is huge, by modern standards.
This was a charming version of Emma, certainly entertaining, however I much prefer the version starring Gwenyth Paltrow as Emma, and the very dashing Jeremy Northam as George Knightly. It is a much more meaty script, follows the book better, and has an amazing, whimsical music score. Check it out people! Although I think Mark Strong also makes a wonderful Knightly😍 Whichever you like better, you can't go wrong with a Jane Austen! ❤
That is true - and in the end always a matter of taste - which can´t be disputed. Enjoy. regards. Thanks.
Me too, and I like Kate B. more than Gwenyth P , but when I was reading de book, what apear in my mind was Genyth Paltrow's Emna, in my opinion she captured more the ingenuity of a spoiled girl even in her voice . I love to watch both versions.
@@bluebird2604 I totally agree! Probably the only thing I have seen GP in that I liked her..!

Thank you for uploading this. I've never seen this version before and I wanted to. I appreciate it.
For the most part it is well cast and I appreciate that they are mostly faithful to the original story. However, one deviation which I do not appreciate is turning Mrs. Elton into an American. And played by someone who has a rather poor grasp of the American accent at that. It seems she cannot decide if she's from New York, Oklahoma or Georgia. Honestly. As if the English have not enough boorish people of their own. I did not realize anti-Americanism was in vogue as far back as 1997. Or is it based more on general British snobbishness which does, unfortunately, ruin their otherwise impeccable manners.
Glad, that you discovered this version! We enjoy it very much, always. Best regards.

😂😂😂😂😂so funny, beatifull😊
It is - it leaves us with a big smile!
He was about to tell her about Jane Fairfax at 58:23 I have fond memories of Box Hill in 1961-64, bicycling London-Brighton
Olivia Williams is stuning
at 106:50 . . . "Will you dance with me?" and Emma answers, "You, if you'll dance with me." And, astounded, he answers, "Will you?" . . . The universal truth from time immemorial: that the woman chooses the man, not the other way around. . . . at 109:10 "Mr. knightley invites you to taste his strawberries . . . which are ripening fast!" (I'll bet!)
Like in tango. The man guides. The woman defines how he has to guide. hx. Enjoy.
For me Mark is the best Mr. Knightley. Kate is also very, very good.
Great! Thanks. Enjoy.
So? I think Ms Austen means to show us that some things--like the human mating rituals-´-never change . . . She could esily have been writing about twentieth and twenty-first century people in our present society.
Yes - something universally true about mating - of course within her social status and surroundings.
Emma is jealous of anyone who has beauty and skills. It is a little childish and selfish. I though her gossip of Jane Fairfax very cringy. But I do like the adaptation.
Yes, where there are human beings there is light and there are shadows - the little edges everyone has - and why not the heroine herself! Thank you. Enjoy.
Mark Strong is perfectly yummy in this movie.
Very strong - literally spoken! Thx.
I don´t get the ending. What has robbery in the hen house have to do with the rest of the story? Or was there supposed to be a part 2?
Yeah - very questionable. I am anyway not a fan of this novel. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed the film but, can't help wondering whether the word joke had appeared at that time? Things were often said in Jest. Just a thought.
Joke seems to be anachronistic. Talking in jest seem to be appropriate for the time and for Austen. What was the intention of the screenwriter? What would be the intention f the heroine would be acted by a chinese actress? What would be the intention if ... I assume it wasn´t done by coincidence or by mistake. Thanks for your hint and thought! Very appreciated.
Why does the VHS and DVD differ from this movie? It is kinda of odd that they wouldn't give you the whole version. 😊
To get an answer - I thin we have to ask the production company! Thx.
My favorite version is the 1996 one. I felt this Emma and Mr. Knightley didn’t have chemistry. And too bad this Mr. Knightley was balding. They picked a better looking man for Mr. Elton. Jeremy Northam was the perfect Mr. Knightley in the 1996 one.
More people share your impression. It is very interesting for me - reading all the various opinions and impressions. It always broadens one´s mind! Thank you.
To be fair, it IS a bit rushed.
It is, indeed!
Legit thought Knightley was gonna falcon punch Churchill at some point 😂
Spoiler alert! Why use this photo?? Enjoyed the movie❤
