- I am building a huge Garden Room Workshop and this time i will be showing you how i build the roof for my timber frame structure. I will show you how to make a flat roof right up to the point of EDPM rubber roof preparation.

It looks amazing, started watching your videos for some plumbing advice and ended up on this series really good stuff. The only tiny thing is impact drivers hit 110 decibels which can cause hearing loss, I could be completely wrong but thought you might want to look into it

Built a garage almost exactly the same way about 5 years ago and it was absolutely rock solid. dramas that I came across was the flat roof, They love to leak and the concrete base, ordered ready mix and was too wet when poured and dried dusty. I would definitely go with an angled roof if I done it again and maybe sit the frame on a couple of courses of brick as the bottom of timber cladding goes manky quickly.

This couldn't come at a better time i was planning on building a breeze block shed 4x2m this year but now i am contemplating doing it this way as i don't need to dig out foundations then and my ground is already pretty level as i leveled it all last year when i laid a patio for a hot tub and decided to re level the full garden at the same time, i originally decided on breeze block because i couldn't be bothered with wood rotting in 10 year and having to paint it every year, i never even thought of using metal cladding i cant wait to see the end result.

Did a cold roof and EPDM last summer. I would’ve hated to have done it in the depths of winter with the amount of storms and rain we’ve had, so fair play!

I was considering a build of this size, but seeing how much time it's taken with help I may have to scale it back considerably as I'm so rural I'll be doing it all myself! (maybe "future proof" it by working out a modular system for the walls etc based around 8x4 panels....)
Yeah it probably takes 10-12 days without filming and two of us.

A great presentation and loving the project so far. In episode 1 or 2, you used a lockable straight edge to use with the circular saw - I tried to catch the name and make but couldn't. Would you happen to have a link to one? It could be my saviour - thank you and looking forward to episode 4.

@@TheDIYGuy1 Yeh I believe it has to be within a certain percent of your outside space, if I'm right in thinking that.
I just can't be arsed to be dealing with planning or building inspectors, which I'm sure I will do one day. I would find that nerve racking. So much "code" to be aware of I'm sure I would miss something silly yet critical.

Top tip for picking up spilt screws or nails... Wrap a strong magnet in a rag and run it over all the silt little devil's then simply wrap the lose bit of rag back over them, pull the magnet off and tip the little bleeders back in the pot.

What span table did you use for your roof timbers?? As I can only see 6x2 c24 timbers good enough for a 3474mm span at 400 centres. Looking at building one above 30m2 and will need to meet regs so just curious. Love the content.
Thanks for this brilliant video. I have a question - do you need to cut a notch (is it a birdstooth?) in the rafters where it sits on the wall plates at the front and rear? Or is the angle so shallow it doesn't matter?
Thanks Cameron, very clear as usual. We're down in the far south west with very high UV in the summer - I can imagine the rubber drying and cracking after a few years, how long is the EDPM guaranteed for? Or would I be best to stick with a tin roof as was my original plan?
Your welcome. This Firestone rubber roof is guaranteed for 25 years. You shouldn’t have any issues with the product regardless of high uv.
Where did you get the EDPM from? Did you just order one big sheet? Did the sheet come with all the glue etc to stick it to the roof? Thanks great vid showing product names etc. As I said before I’m interested in how you’re keeping this ventilated and mould free. Nice job mate.
All of this came from MKM building supplies as a kit. I gave them the measurements and they send over everything that’s needed. The brand of roofing is Firestone. Thanks

glue? shouldnt there be a 3mm gap between the boards for expansion and contraction? I was thinking to use some flexible stuff between my boards when I do it
Nope. Your not going to get any movement in those boards.

How does the rain , run off the flat roof. The wooden structure will move over a time . Dips could be created in the roof structure.
Your work is excellent.
In the previous episode we created a fall when building our walls. There will be no movement or dips, I know because I built one of these three years ago and it stands absolutely spot on to this date
Yup, flat roofs are a big mistake.
if you have to comply with permitted dev rules they are a necessity. Even a mineral felt roof, built correctly, will last up to 25 years. @@tuppyglossop222

What is the thickness of the roof OSBoards?
Would 600mm on centres been enough for strength? i.e. reduce costs....
Why not align your roof joists with your 400 centre studs? Do you think just using screws to hold the joists will be sufficient. Would it have been worth using upside down joist hangers to secure the roof to the main building?
If you align with the wall uprights you would have to spike the joist down which takes longer. In a previous build I have done this method worked perfectly and the building stands as good as it did when I built it three years ago so I’m satisfied the method used is strong enough.

how are the joists sitting flush on the walls either end when there is a big difference to the front and back wall heights ? :)
There’s not enough of a fall for it to matter. No birds mouth or joist hangers needed. Just sit them on top
I notice you dont use a nail gun for the joist, always thought screws snap.
Well spotted. No need, Screws are only weaker under shear pressure which won’t be a factor on joists.
Do you think single 5x2's are enough for a building span of 3.2m (3.8m including overhangs)?

Head height doesn’t change depending on what timbers you use
Check out episode 3 where I calculated this. It does change because your restricted to 2.5m under permitted development. A thicker roof means shorter walls and in turn less head height.

What sort of internal height are you aiming for? ie. once the floor is laid and as you've used 6 x 2s? Are you planning on insulating the floor too, with a floating PIR floor for example?
I’m going to build a 8x6 shed in my back garden, the garden is already flagged if I level out the flags will I be ok just building the shed on them or will I need to have the shed slightly off the floor
If it’s just a simple shed with timber shed base then I can’t see that being an issue providing they are level and have a good sub base.

Can I use 47mm x 74mm timber for roofing?
No there is a rule of thumb , 100mm up to 1.2 span , 125mm up to 2.4 , 150 up to 3.2 , 175 up to 3.6 , 200 up to 4.2 and 225 up to 4.8 , unless there is a central wall then use the rule for span from outside wall to centre 👍

50+ with ease. Firestone roof expectancy alone is 50 years
I’ve been enjoying you stuff for the last few months, question for you… I’m from the US and unless you’re in a dry climate like the southwest it’s kind of frowned upon putting a flat roof on because of water drainage, is that a concern for you at all?
Thanks. Whilst this is classed as a flat roof, it isn’t truly flat as we have a fall on our roof. More of this is explained in episode 3 where we built the walls.
The only issue I find with "flat" roofs is you sometimes end up with more water escaping down the sides and not down the slope of the roof but in the UK we don't have much choice due to the height restriction (2.5m).

Sharp OSB corners do indeed puncture EPDM rubber roofs if you let them flap around. I laid it on top of my roof without tacking it down (which you did). Sanding the corners also a very nice touch to further reduce chances of a 😢😢😢 moment.

The tounge and groove are advisable to be on a noggin or supported as it's a flex point even with the glue company's won't honor the warrenty

How much roughly for material costs?
For this size build fully finished with electrics, heating, insulation etc will probably cost somewhere in the region of 10-12k

Belts and braces ? Should have glued the OSB to the ceiling joists to, noggins should be in middle up to 3.6mtrs anything over should be in thirds but nice job it’s just a shed 👍
Never glued the osb to the roof joists. Can’t see the benefit of that one when it’s got nails throughout but thanks for sharing your methods all the same 👍

I'll be interested to see if if you go with a cold, warm or hybrid roof. Are you trying to remain under 2.5m height for permitted dev rules? I'll be building a garden room with a warm roof and I don't know how to insulate at the ends of the joists. I've watched loads of vids but this is never explained well enough for a dumbass like me 😀
