    If I leave a ten pin, I just reduce my ball speed a tiny bit. I know a lot of people move over a board or two, but I tend to bowl by feel. I give that ball another half-second to turn up. I get a little less power that way, but a better strike angle. I learned that from Tommy Baker and, later Chris Barnes. It may or may not work for you, But that's my go-to before I start opening up the lane.

    Thanks for posting this video. When I used to bowl league, I always wondered why I wasn't as surprised as others when I left a 10 pin or someone else did. I always assumed that I threw the ball a touch fast or missed my target, resulting in a slightly late or less than ideal/weakeer entry into the pocket. Maybe I wasn't being too pessimistic after all! 😂

    I just started league bowling a few years ago. I'm still what I would consider a rookie. I have learned a lot and am starting to bowl some really high scores and it's been fun. This season I had one game with 3 10 pin leaves and one game with 2 ten pin leaves. All the other frames in both games were X's. Sooooooo close to that glorious 300 game.....but....THAT DAMN 10 PIN!!!!!!!!!!

      I have had 4 279 games and even one 298 but just cant get it done. I bowed for about 10 years straight in my 20's one of the 279 games was then. I then stopped for about 15 years but just got back into it this past fall. I have had 4 279 games this season and then I had my 298 in February but it was my fault on it as I threw it wide and it did not make it back. I have had 15 in a row before but it was in two games. I know it is a matter of time now. I am almost always in the pocket. But tonight my last 2 games I was in 10 pin hell. This is the year I get it done. I never had youtube or a bowling coach before and now that I got CZcams to coach me things improved. I started tis league with a 153 average and that was a lot lower than 15 years ago but I ended with 195 and I roll 600's very often and even had 3 700's this year so Next year I will have over a 200 average. It has been 3 years do you still bowl and have you got it done yet?

    The same is true for a 7 pin leave. The term "pocket" is actually misleading. You would get a split hitting the 1 & 3 pins right in the middle. The ideal target is slightly to the right on the 1 pin, on board 17.5.

      Robert OConnor Moving up or back is always my first adjustment when I leave a 7 pin. I am a lefty by the way. It is the easiest thing to do. I don''t have to change anything else just where I stand on the approach.

    • @coachlange4323
      @coachlange4323 Před 5 lety +2

      Moving back or moving left are typically the first two adjustments that most players can make. If you are happy with the shape of the ball path, moving left ½-1 board first is probably a better option. If you don't like the speed of the ball and feel that the ball is driving too soon then moving back is probably your first adjustment. The toughest part about moving back is sometimes it has the unintended effect of having the speed of the ball increase but the Rev rate does not increase in the same proportion to match up. Other times it can make the ball speed decrease and now you are on the headpin or crossing over.
      Additionally, moving back might help you get the ball on the lane sooner if you don't change the lay down angle (more or less loft) which means it's going to maintain more speed down lane before it transitions into its hook and roll phases. Essentially you're modifying your lay down distance which can also smooth out the ball motion and give you a better pocket hit. Moving forward or backwards can also cause problems sometimes if the heads are either very wet or very dry.
      Another thing you can do is to move your eyes closer to the line or farther toward the pins along your intended ball path. This can adjust when you get the ball on the lane and can change the time the ball is in each phase. This varies from bowler to bowler, because of the little nuances that bowlers change when they move the distance of their eyes. For example, if a bowler looks farther, they might loft it and that can make the ball slow down and you might end up with the same result, or it could help, depending on how the bowler adjusts their foot and ball speed. It's a personal preference, really. You just have to make the adjustment that you feel most comfortable in making that allows you to change the least amount of variables and stay consistent from shot to shot in order to get that ball to enter the pocket and deflect less.

      I throw a cheap Twist bowling ball at league because I'm somewhat rev dominant. And I play the oil line so I don't have to adjust much. But I can start leaving lots of 10 pins, especially in game 3. I think I need to explore higher differential balls that still get down the lane.

    Cool video. @Theodor Dinu Exactly right. I looked at the angle of entry data a while back that the USBC did about 10 years ago (maybe more), while not the focus of the data, I noticed in the data set data to back that up. In addition to entry angle, the data also gave the amount off of the perfect hit location in boards (I think) and there was a dip in strike percentage between perfect and 1 board off spot. Then at 2-3 boards off spot, the strike percentage increased closer to "perfect" Hence the "how does he carry that and mine didn't" syndrome. Finally, I noticed, and this video shows it (so glad I found it) that a "flush" hit (1-3 at the exact same time) is actually not "perfect" like I had thought my whole life, but with modern eq. the ball actually hits the 1 slightly before the 3....good shooting.

    It is interesting that a solid 10 pin or weak 10 pin left on the deck could be a too fast ball speed? The other factor to consider is the cross of boards from left to right as ball rolls brings entry angle behind hd pin too much. Straight up the lane and not crossing left to right will gain you many carries of that pesky leave.

      The probably don't go over solutions because amount of adjustment needed is very minimal. Your best bet is to pick whichever adjustment is the easiest for you to control be it target, speed, timing, or what board you are on.

    Another factor with the shot that left the 10-pin is not only was the angle slightly different if you look closely you can see that it also finishes slightly higher, which changes the angle that the 3-pin takes toward the 10.

    @vanni9283 Před 9 lety +6

    Well it's one of those things where you're not striking, but adjusting off of it is risky b/c you don't want to lose the pocket, especially when bowling on the types of conditions that these pros are bowling on. The real problem is when you keep leaving them, which is likely a good indicator that you're using the wrong bowling ball.

    I, too, noticed this years ago and have been saying it to unbelieving cohorts for years. I do think it is odd that the "perfect" strike ball does NOT hit the 9 pin. The 9 is one of the four pins the ball is supposed to hit to generate a strike. It would have, but the 3 takes it out before the ball gets there. BTW - the guy kicking the ball return is a LEFTY...LoL He left a 10 for a completely different reason I would suspect. Prolly the only time he'll be in a vid with KK.

  • @SirJoelsuf1
    @SirJoelsuf1 Před 9 lety +1

    That's not a ringing 10. That's a "flat" or "weak" 10. Ringing 10 is where the 6 wraps around the 10 pin. Here the ball is coming in too light with too heavy of a roll thus the 6 pin just laying there and not hitting the 10 pin. In technical terms, the weak 10 shown in the video is a miss of a half a board right.

    How do people aim 'half a board'? If I aim for, lets say, the 25 board arrow, by the time the ball gets to the arrows it can be anywhere from the 15 to the 35 board. And thats with straightballs - when I try to hook, the ball often addresses either gutter before it even gets to the arrows! Hence I usually save hooks for beer games.

    A very simplistic view of leaving 10 pins. I am not a pro, but I started bowling over 60 years ago when nothing but rubber balls were available. I never bowled a 300 until they came out with urethane balls. Bowled another when they came out with resin balls. Now I still bowl but probably getting too old to ever throw another 300, but I did bowl a 278 a couple months ago... a 278, 268 ,258 set. Not bad for an old geezer. But I am thinking about getting into "buying a game" again. In case you never heard of that, it simply means buying new bowling balls until you get one that works good for your style of bowling and the alley conditions where you bowl. I almost never practice and I only bowl 3 games a week (not at all in the summer), but years ago when I went out and "bought a game", my average went from 180 with a rubber ball to over 220 with a resin ball. I was still the same bowler, but with one of these new fangled balls my average went up 40 pins. Have never used a pearl / pearlized ball which is another new fangled type ball. I haven't bought a new ball in 10 or 15 years, so maybe if I buy a pearl ball, or a hybrid resin pearlized ball... So the best advice I can give an average bowler who wants to score higher is to just spend some money on your bowling balls. Try a several different kinds. Try different technicians to drill the new balls. Two different technicians might drill the same identical ball two different ways in different places on the ball to try to take advantage of the weight blocks, side weight and top weight that are built into the ball. These new fangled balls work so well that a going an entire night without leaving a single 10 pin is not that rare.
