  • One of the best examples of the "Verismo" genre in opera (verismo meaning realism) in which the characters live and breathe with raw emotion and passion.
Puccini was one of its foremost exponents; and his opera "The Girl of the Golden West" is an actual "horse-opera" based on David Belasco's play, set during the California Gold Rush. Here is the hair-raising confrontation between the title-character and the Sheriff, over the life of the bandit whom she loves. Superbly sung and enacted by Barbara Daniels and Sherrill Milnes.
The entire performance is available on DVD from Deutsche Grammophon and also for streaming from Met Opera on Demand.
