  • Nzinga is one of my favorite women in history. She lived a fascinating life that is not recounted nearly as often as it should be. Nzinga was the warrior ruler of the Kingdoms of Ndongo and Matamba, which now constitute modern-day Angola. She spent her life in on-and-off warfare with the Portuguese, trying to protect her people and the rest of the African interior from slave raiders. So what did she look like? Unfortunately we don’t quite have a contemporary portrait of her - what we do have is a copy of a lost original sketch. Let's learn about her history and then I'll reveal my recreation of the Warrior Queen.

I wonder whether you might consider doing more on historical figures from Africa. I'm not African myself, but it troubles me that the history of Africa and Africans has been shamelessly airbrushed by European propaganda for 500 years (the story of Great Zimbabwe is a notable example.) The problem, I know, is how to get to the reality behind the propaganda, but it would be interesting to try.

I'm 100% behind this. Africa is the home of all humanity, the third largest landmass at this time, and has the most varied human genetic profile of any continent. It's full of intelligent, inventive peoples, great artists, and amazing history. However, in the West, we know almost nothing about it, save the horrors we see on the news, most of which are in some way due to European and Arab colonialism. I want to learn more.
(Just a hint, but most of this also applies to South America.)

She and her sister was shipped from the west coast to the West Indies. I got chills when you revealed this recreation. I swear, especially when the historical references are sparse, you must channel the essence of your subjects with some kind of artistic tuned-into-the-cosmos extrasensory vision. I think you must have the same talent that forensic anthropologists do, who can recreate faces from skulls going partly by science but also largely by an intuitive 'feel' and inner sense of what that person must have looked like. Thanks for this wonderful portrait of Nzinga, and the compelling history that goes with it. I love how you recap complex biographies in a concise yet captivating manner. ❤

I remember reading the “Royal Diaries” book about Nzinga years ago. I never before heard the story about how she used one of her women as a chair during the meeting, that was awesome and definitely unforgettable. I don’t have all the books in the “Royal Diaries” series though, but there is another royal I learned about from those books. If you ever do a recreation of the face of Queen Kristina of Sweden, I’d recommend using a portrait by David Beck showing her in a white dress at a window looking up from reading a letter, or a portrait by Abraham Wuchters showing Kristina in a white dress with a blue ribbon and holding a scepter or something, I think those portraits especially come the closest to showing what Kristina’s face looked like in real life.

utterly breathtaking video not only are you an incredible artist so gifted in the style of Vermeer who captured the spiritual divinity of women in everyday tasks but a skilled narrator and historian I truly am in awe and a devoted fan please keep up the excellent work which I believe is your calling as a priest the spread of Christianity often propagated and developed by women who were the prodigies of their day is both inspiring and amazing God bless you, Father Charles Anderson
