  • Everyone but Nancy McKeon reflects on the epic, timeless classic that captured a nation and defined a decade. The show that singlehandedly stopped a suicide and entertained millions. Well, okay it ain't all that, but hey, hype makes the world go round.

      @@aquachonk I honestly hope you did not "become her," but rather were "like her" because you had similar personality traits. She was not a good role model later on when she "lost her virginity" in an extramarital relationship, however. I hope in that respect that you did not follow in her footsteps (and yes, I'm "old" - 67 y/o, but as an R.N. & a child of the '60's, I'm not naive....I just think females & males frequently ruin future relationships with their promiscuous behaviors & the psychological & spiritual "baggage" they take with them when they do find "the right one."
      I know I sound judgmental & I'm on a soap-box right now (please forgive), but I love everyone (like you & Natalie, I am a happy-go-lucky, smiling, touchy-feely kind of personality). As a result, I'm resigned to let people have their own lives & make their own decisions, even though they often suffer the consequences by doing it the hard way. My mom always liked saying to me, "Learn from the mistakes of others, because you'll never live long enough to make them all yourself." (Eleanor Roosevelt?)
      Anyway, thanks for reading & I hope you will accept my rambling in the spirit in which it was given. Take care!

    People tend to forget that, in the late 70s and early 80s, Blair would have been described as "fat" while Natalie would have been described as "obese". By today's standards, Blair in Seasons 2 and 3 (when she was at her heaviest) would be described as "average" while Natalie would be described as "plump".

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh Před rokem

      That's because being skinny (oftentimes anorexic/bulimic stick thin, much to many a celebrity starlet's detriment) was the "in" thing (and it traditionally will always be the default go-to for many executives, whether TV audiences/magazine readers/average people like it or not) & fat-shaming (or really, any kind of body-shaming in general) wasn't as much a hot-button issue as it is nowadays, which is only because America's overall growing obesity problem ultimately led to most Americans feeling easily triggered/butthurt/greatly offended over body issue insults, even if the tactless put downs generated by late night TV host personalities were not dealt with accordingly by the showrunners & were even worsened when the girl's puberty weight gains led to the producers seemingly starving Lisa Whelchel so she would maintain the weight expected of Blair's slender character, meanwhile sending Mindy Cohn to fat farms to maintain the husky/hefty/plump weight indicative of Natalie's character.

    • @sparklemotion101ni3
      @sparklemotion101ni3 Před 2 lety +1

      It could be that Mindy was too closely associated with her role as Natalie; sometimes when an actor becomes really famous for playing a certain part, audiences (and more importantly, directors & producers) just can't see that actor doing anytithing else. I'm sure it didn't help that Mindy had no track record before playing Natalie Green, so her agents couldn't point to her having successfully played a character who was a true 180 from her network TV debut.
      So, Mindy did some guest appearances on other shows, some recurring TV work & some minor films, but she never found a role that spoke to audiences the way "Natalie" did, and so Mindy hasn't found success anywhere close to the way she did when she was a teenager & was chosen for a co-starring role without ever trying to get cast on TV (much less trying to get cast on a long-running network-TV hit that succeeded far beyond creators' hopes, never mind their expectations...
      I only saw "The Facts of Life" when it was in sybdicated re-runs, playing every afternoon when I came home from elementary school. I didn't understand the difference between shows that were in prime-time and shows running every day because they were in syndication & had been prime-time hits in the past, but I loved "The Facts of Life" and Natalie was by far my favorite. Blair was the prettiest; Tootie was the cutest (and had the best voice, which was clear from the few times Kim Fields was allowed to sing); Jo admirably stood up for herself (which was always impressive, though I didn't at all understand the references to Jo/Nancy being gorgeous: her character's tomboy style blinded me to the fact that Nancy McKeon was/is stunning); but of all of the actors on that show, I only really related to Mindy Cohn/Natalie Green. I don't know if it's because I'm from New York and my cousin Elizabeth looks so much like Mindy that they could have been sisters during Mindy's first seasons on the show, or if it's that Mindy always looked like she was having so much fun playing Natalie, but if Mindy had left the cast for some reason (regardless of whether she had left by choice or been fired), withour Mindy Cohn on the show I simply would not have kept watching TFoL. So, I'm glad that Mindy remained a regular cast member for the entire series, and I watched the show in syndication every day after school until my HS schedule stopped allowing it, at which point I left for college and - thanks to having no TV in my dorm and having a schedule that allowed nothing but classwork and rehearsals for my own performances on weekday afternoons - I said goodbye forever to my afternoon-TV habit. Rtill, I'll always have a soft-spot for Natalie & The Facts of Life, and now, when I happen upon an episode, I always watch until the end if I have other plans and have to rearrange my schedule so I can watch until the end without stopping & without having to record the rest & returning to complete it the next day.
      I've seen the whole series so I know what's going to happen, but that doesn't stop me from watching the rest when I find an episode playing, even though I haven't planned to watch anything at all that afternoon.

I’m 17 now and I never thought I was gonna be lesbian, but growing up she’s always been my favorite character and I think deep down I knew I liked her even if I didn’t know what being lesbian was, and like I said I’m 17 now, I’m re binge watching it again and realizing how much I love Jo😂 like growing up I was a Tom boy and into motorcycles and when they’re was drama with me and my friends at school I learned my comebacks from Jo. I never liked seasons 5-9 when I was younger because the cast grew up, plus I didn’t like the way their hair was but this is my first time binge watching it in years and I’m realizing how much I love the 80’s and their hair. I was born in 2002 but if I was to live in any decade it’ll be the 80’s hands down.
      My first time ever watching The Paris movie was a few days ago and I cried so much when Jo met that guy because I got jealous but when they had to say bye to each other I cried more because I knew Jo was in love with him.
      I think Jo and Dana Plato (Kimberly from Diff’rent Strokes) were my first ever TV crush when I didn’t even know it when I was a kid.

    It is so cool to see Felice Schachter and Julie Piekarski in this video. I wish Julie Anne Haddock and Molly Ringwald had done interviews for this video.

      Molly Ringwald was the only child actress who never did a reunion or special. She still seems to be bitter being fired from FOL. Even though she made the most money of anyone on the show.

    I was 10 when FACTS OF LIFE started in 1979 and I literally grew up with the cast. The show was a precious part of my life. As I watch this video and hear them talk about all of the "issues" such as cast weight gain, etc, I never even noticed any of that. I'm a guy, but I was going through all of the same teen issues - puberty, self image, interacting with peers - and the show was kind of like the railing you hold on to as you walk a lone flight of stairs. The show ended at the same time I graduated high school, and it just added to that sick feeling of "Crap, I'm an adult now and have to fly on my own." And this was the same feeling among my siblings and friends and school mates. All those things that went on behind the scenes - we didn't see that; all we saw was what was on the screen. I only wish the cast could have understand how much they were a part of our lives and how much they meant to us. To me.

    33:25 It's like... the narrator isn't even paying attention to the program.
    She straight up says she was the token disability kid and Emmy-bait that didn't lure in an Emmy. Three seconds later: "Jeri was a daring attempt to address a tough issue on prime time!" You'd think they could at least wait a couple of beats before COMPLETELY contradicting the statement she just made. Either it was a shameless and shallow gimmick... OR it was a noble attempt at curbing a VERY specific brand of bigotry. It can't be both. And the fact that they booted her out so quickly when her inclusion didn't benefit the bottom line kinda indicates which one it was.

    Back during the 80's I had a crush on Lisa .... she was not fat and absolutely perfect in my mind. Beautiful and a wonderful personality, too.

    Kim Fields talking crazy! Kim was an adorable scene stealer. She wasn't going anywhere.
