Shotgun Barrel Length - Barrel Length Comparison

- I wanted to compare the spread between 4 different shotgun barrel lengths and 3 common loads.
Loads used:
Winchester - 2 3/4 - #8
Federal - 2 3/4 - #4
Rio - 2 3/4 - 00
Barrel lenths:
14 inch - cylinder
20 inch - cylinder
30 inch - full
36 inch - modified - Komedie
I am sure this is the sloppiest and least-informative shooting video I have seen. I DO NOT WANT TO BE SHOT AT BY ANYONE, but if I must be shot at by somebody, I choose you. If I'm lucky, the magazine will fall out of your gun. If I'm luckier than that, you will get lost on your way to the range.
LOL. Thanks! Don’t forget to dislike and subscribe.

The fact you pinned it is hilarious haha
bro what??
I'm a year late, but still..
This video explains a lot. Don't know why it has so less likes. Its far better than other many videos of shotgun pattern comparison. Superb
I appreciate that.
Did a search for shotgun barrel comparisons and this one came up. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I do not have a lot of experience with shotguns so I reached out to find a video. I know some people in the comments made fun of you, but I want to say thanks for putting this together as it was helpful to see the difference in spreads with longer barrel guns and different pellet sizes. And make no mistake those were some far distances. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. One thing learn from this experience was that the shorty and the goose gun are not as intuitive as the standard size shotguns.
Good work.
Great video.
Keep them coming.
Thanks! I have a video dropping tomorrow.
@@nomadsadventures Will look out for it.
That goose gun probably has so much “swing” to it that I’d probably wind up doing a 360 while trap shooting lol, great video my guy!
No kidding! It is definitely a specific tool for a very specific job. It is completely impractical for anything I would want to use if for but that is why I like it. It would be fun to do a dove hunting video. Between the 360 swings and the mags dropping in the dirt, I think it would be rather entertaining.
If all your chokes are not modified chokes , this comparison is useless!
I agree and disagree. As a controlled test of only barrel length, you are correct, it isn’t perfect. As for a simple demonstration of barrel lengths with “standard or common” chokes, it makes for an enlightening comparison.
Thanks for the comment. Have you checked out the Thumper Thursday videos? Your feedback would be appreciated.
HAVENT BEEN HUNTING IN YEARS SO U MAKE ME LAUGH AND I ALWAYS HAD A GREAT LAUGH WHEN OUT HUNTING WITH MY FATHER .KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND HAVE A GREAT DAY
Man that goose gun is cool.
Yeah it is!
Looks like a huge argument for bullpup shotguns. :D
No kidding!
Barrel length differences and choke differences tested at teh same time. Results represent combinations of two factors, barrel length and choke. No conclusive data, need to repeat experiment with same choke different barrel lengths.
Nice
I purchased a shot fun was the a 21" barrel with a mod choke...can I shot birds with a reasonable spread with #4 shot. I love that it's light and easy to use in the bush but wondering if you have an thoughts thanks
That’s a good question. In short, each shotgun handles different loads completely different than any other shotgun. The most consistent thing about shotguns is their inconsistency. Thunder Ranch and TFBTV had a good video about that not long ago. My recommendation, get the load you would like to shoot and pattern it at 10, 20, 30 and so on yards. Once you are comfortable with the pattern of the load that you finally choose, buy more of those shells.

Hey, do you think a 14" 12GA with full choke would be okay for hunting birds?
No, I do not. Unless you are talking about an emu. For the flying types I’d stick with a 26”+ barrel with an improved or modified chock.
Dont know a real lot about shotguns old mate but if barrel length making a difference to patten size at distance is your aim, you really have to have the same choke in each gun barrel I would think. Hope this helps.
So was the difference because the barrel size or the chokes ?
Short answer, Both.
Longer answer, Most “tactical” shotguns have are cylinder choke. This keeps the buckshot from being deformed and still provides good accuracy for a slug. There are a few videos I’ve seen that goes in more detail about this. The 3 things that really affect the spread are barrel length, chock and the quality of the wad. Folks often forget that the wad hold the pellets together longer once they leave the barrel. The right wad and choke combination will help to get tighter group at a further distance. As with anything, every gun or shoot different loads better or worse.
You couldn't even make a good shot placement on those paper plates every time with a shotgun at close range. God damn😂! Watching you shoot that Mossberg Shockwave with no experience had me shaking me head! Stick with Papi's old goose gun until you get the hang of shooting that. Then move up to the tactical Rambo guns!
I couldn’t agree more about the shockwave. If someone is going to use it as a defense gun they should definitely spend time at the range to get familiar with it. A 30” scattergun is definitely where my experience is. Thanks for watching! Have you watched Thumper Thursday?
Wonderful video, you should have used the same choke on all the barrels for fair comparison. Nice video..
Yeah, I wish I could have.
@@nomadsadventures you can make another one pal!
Get some #4 buck for that shockwave
Thanks for the recommendation.
I have 34" half chock barrel Indian made effective range buck shot?
Hard to say. You need to shoot your gun with a few brands and sizes of buckshot to see which it likes best.
Thanks
Im curious to know what brand ammo was used for buckshot, not all is made the same. Also, full chokes for some are actually worse with 00 buck. Deforms the shot leavin the barrel. Wish all chokes were the same in the video and you definitely shot low with the goose gun at 100. Could see the dust cloud.
Rio. I wish I could have used all the same chokes but only one of the guns had removable chokes.
@@nomadsadventures all can use cylinder choke though, besides mabey the goose gun I'd assume. And yeah... rio and other buckshot like that just dont pattern good due to how cheap they're made. No frills no extras in them. Basically just shot and powder.
18" is minimum legal length. Hope you don't get caught with it.
The Shockwave is classified as a “firearm” not a shotgun.
Some experts say you shouldnt go and clear the house anyway. Its to dangerous. So if you just stay in your room until the intruder is out or the police is coming you can defend yourself also with a long barrel shotgun.
For some that might be the best course of action. However, those experts probably don’t have children on the other side of the house.
what was the choke on the 30" ?
Improved cylinder. Thanks for watching!
@@nomadsadventures i just noticed under the video you stated the 30" was a full chock , 14 and 20 were cylinder . What is correct ?
@@jonadabster8401 Sorry, I actually had to go back and look at the description also to remind myself.
Interesting
damn, you dont see many bolt action scatterguns these days. hang on to that pea shooter. at my store we recently started selling lever action shotguns. yeah, brand new from the manufacturer lever action 12 ga. shotguns. they are pretty damn kewl. just not something you see everyday these days.
Yeah man, it’s a cool piece. I can’t help think Terminator when I see a lever action 12 gauge.
